Canna-oil: The Mason Jar Method

Preheat your oven at 240 F

Grind your herb with a grinder and put in a mason jar, cover with aluminum foil and closes with the metal ring only.

Put in the oven and cook for 40 minutes. Shake the jar every 15 minutes or so. Your cannabis should be toasty and slightly brown. If your cannabis starts to turn dark brown or black, remove it from the oven even if your timers is not finished.

Remove the jar from the even and let it cool down at room temperature before opening.

Decarboxylating

Add the oil and lecithin into the mason jar with the previously decarboxylated cannabis. Stir and close it again with aluminum foil and the metal ring.

Put the mason jar in a crockpot lined with an old kitchen towel. Fill with water until the water is higher than the oil level. If you can, put a lid on the crockpot to reduce water evaporation.

Turn on your crockpot and set it up so that the water is barely simmering. Infuse the oil in the mason jar for 4 to 6 hours. Refill the water as needed.

Strain the cannabis oil while still hot with a tea strainer

Let the oil cool down at room temperature and label the jar with a warning and the oil potency.

Use according to your recipe and enjoy!

How to Make Homemade Cannabis Salve (CBD or THC)

If your cannabis is not yet decarboxylated, grind or tear it up into fairly small pieces. Spread evenly on a baking sheet, and heat it in the oven on 250°F for 25 to 30 minutes.

Decarb Cannabis

Add water to the bottom pan of your double-boiler. Now add 1.5 cup of coconut oil to the top section of the double-boiler. Heat until it melts.

Stir in 7-10 grams of decarboxylated cannabis into the melted oil. Feel free to also include an optional few grams of raw ground cannabis if you desire.

Continue to heat the cannabis and oil over a low heat for 30 to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Use a probe thermometer to check the temperature. Adjust the heat as needed to maintain the oil below 200°F. (We aim for 130 to 150°F, and infuse for one hour)

When the time is up, line a strainer with cheesecloth and position it over a glass bowl. Pour the cannabis and oil mixture through the strainer. Gather the cheesecloth and gently squeeze out the excess oil from the cannabis. Warning: the oil will be hot, and your hands will get greasy! You may want to wear food-grade gloves.

Keep the strained cannabis oil aside for now. It will be added to the salve mixture soon.

Make Cannabis-Infused Oil (skip to next section if you already did this)

If you&#x27;re using solidified cannabis-infused coconut oil that you previously made, I highly suggest mixing everything in a double-boiler once again (since you’ll need to heat it longer and hotter to re-melt your oil). OR, if you just made your cannabis oil and it is still liquified, you can do this step straight in a pot on the stove – keeping the heat as low as possible once the cannabis coconut oil is added.  

In either a pot or double-boiler, add ⅓ cup of beeswax. Heat until it is completely melted. Now turn down the heat to low.

Next, stir in 1.5 cups of strained cannabis coconut oil and ⅓ cup olive oil, along with optional vitamin E plus a few drops of optional essential oils as well. 

Stir until everything looks completely combined. Once it is, quickly remove the liquid salve from the heat and transfer it into your storage containers of choice.

The cannabis salve will harden as it cools, and then it is ready to use!

Mix Salve Ingredients

Store the finished cannabis salve in a cool dark location because light degrades cannabinoids (amber/colbalt glass jars or salve tins will block UV). Keep out of reach from children.

Apply a thin, even layer to the affected area. You should start to feel the results within 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the severity of your issue and strength of your salve. Repeat several times per day as needed.

When stored in ideal cool and dark conditions, homemade cannabis salve should last up to a year. The potency will only slightly decrease during this time. I try to use clean hands when I dig into my salve jars, to avoid introducing any contamination that could make it potentially mold or spoil faster.

Fill your crockpot with enough warm to hot water to cover the top of the mason jars you plan on using by an inch to create a water bath.

Place the digital instant-read thermometer into the water. Start the crockpot heat on high. When a temperature of 185° F is reached, turn the crockpot to low.

Evenly divide the coconut oil between the mason jars you plan on using. You can either use pint-sized or half-pint-sized jars, it&#039;s you&#039;re preference, just be sure they fit in your crockpot. No matter the size, be sure to leave a 1/2 inch headspace from the top.

If you plan on using sunflower lecithin, add it to the mason jars now.

Evenly divide the decarbed flower between the coconut oil-filled jars. Wipe the rim of the jars with a clean paper towel and place the lid on. Tighten the metal ring to finger-tip tightness, it does not have to be tightened all the way. Do not tighten too tightly.

Once the water bath reaches a temperature of 185° F, carefully place the jars into the water bath.

Place the lid on the crockpot and leave alone to infuse for 4 hours.

After 4 hours, carefully remove the lid, followed by the jars from the hot water. Set them aside to cool.

Once cool enough to handle, you will want to strain the cannabis oil through a paper filter and funnel, cheesecloth, or French press to separate the plant-matter from the coconut oil.

Save the leftover cannabis pulp for use in future recipes. Then return the prepared cannabis coconut oil to whatever jar you would like to store it in. We use a mason jar.

Store the prepared cannabis coconut oil in a cool, dry place. It will last longer if stored in the refrigerator and even longer if stored in the freezer.

You can infuse any type of oil, such as canola, vegetable, olive, peanut, sesame oil, and others—all you need is some weed, cheesecloth, and a sauce pan or slow cooker.</p><p>Consuming food made with cannabis cooking oil is similar to consuming edibles or anything made with cannabutter—compared to inhalation methods, effects will take longer to kick in, and they will usually last longer and be stronger.</p>

Recipe for cannabis cooking oil

(7-10 grams) ground cannabis, decarboxylated

Decarb the cannabis

We recommend decarboxylating your weed first, and then putting it in oil. Decarbing turns THCA in the plant into THC, the psychoactive compound that will get you high. Set your oven to 245ºF (118ºC)and put buds on parchment paper on a baking pan. Heat for 30-40 minutes.

Grind or break up the cannabis

Grinders break weed down to the same consistency and will save you time, but you can just as easily break up the weed with your hands. Keep in mind that anything small enough to fit through the mesh strainer or cheesecloth will end up in your finished product, so don’t grind the weed into a fine powder.

Heat oil and decarbed cannabis

Add oil and decarbed cannabis to double-boiler, slow cooker, or saucepan, and simmer on low for 2-3 hours. Make sure the temperature of the oil stays between 160ºF (71ºC)-200ºF (93ºC).

Strain and store the oil

Put mesh strainer or cheesecloth over container for oil and pour the oil-cannabis mixture through it. Do not squeeze it out—this will add more chlorophyll to your oil and make it taste more vegetal. Discard the plant material. The oil will have a shelf life of at least two months and can be extended with refrigeration.
