Baked Onion Dip in a Bread Bowl

I made this dip for a little get together this past weekend.  Can I just tell you how delicious this was?   The entire thing was gone in less than 10 minutes and received rave reviews - from kids and adults alike.  I’m making this again this coming weekend and cannot wait!   Added bonus is that i used the bread from the bowl to make home made croutons and one the dip was gone, sliced the bread bowl to serve with dinner.

This caramelized onion dip is a total crowd pleaser! Serve with chips, pita or bagel crisps, or on sandwiches and burgers. YUM.

Caramelized Onion Dip

onions

salted butter

salt and sugar

white wine

sour cream

parsley

soy sauce (!!)

Prep

 Peel the onions and slice them very thinly. I find it helpful to use a mandoline for this.

Sauté

Heat the butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, sprinkle with salt and sugar, and saute for 10-15 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Pour a little bit of wine in and let it sizzle out. Stir, add wine, sizzle, etc. After about 30 minutes, your onions should be deeply golden brown and fragrant.

Mix: 

Transfer onions to a cutting board and chop coarsely into small pieces &#8211; or just use a kitchen scissors and snip them up right in the pan. Mix the cream cheese and sour cream. Mix in the onions and a handful of fresh parsley. Taste and season &#8211; if you want just a little sumthin sumthin extra, add a small splash (like, a tablespoon or less) of soy sauce and/or Worcestershire. This just gives it a little depth and umami flavor.

I find the BEST caramelized onions come from my cast iron skillet.  Skillets take work to maintain but the results are WORTH IT! I actually just made caramelized onions in a reg ole non-stick last night and it was just not comparable!! Definitely trying this recipe for Friday night :)

This looks absolutely fabulous! I'll probably try it as is (and eat store brand French onion while I make it), but for those who really need it healthier or vegan I'd sub a block of soft tofu soaked in salt water and lemon juice for half an hour blended with a few tablespoons coconut oil for the sour cream and cream cheese. Thanks for the lovely recipe!

This is the best caramelized onion dip EVER! Creamy and wildly flavorful, perfect with chips, pretzels, veggies, or crackers. We love it!

unsalted butter

sweet onions, (chopped)

kosher salt and pepper ((at least 1/2 teaspoon of each, probably more))

sour cream or plain greek yogurt

garlic powder

fresh herbs, (like parsley, for topping)

Heat the butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the onions with a big pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, just until the onions begin to soften. Turn the heat down to low (or medium-low, if low isn’t cooking them), and cook, stirring often, until the onions are dark brown and caramely, anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how much you want to babysit them. This will take a while, but the onions are in smaller pieces, so are also more apt to burn. Keep an eye on them and stir often, reducing the heat when needed. Add a splash of water to the pan if it gets dry at any time.

Let the onions cool slightly before adding them to the dip. Alternately, you can also caramelize the onions a day or two ahead of time! I will caramelize them and store them in a container in the fridge. I do reheat them on low heat (either in a pan or microwave) just to warm the solids up a bit.

Whisk together the sour cream, mayo, garlic powder and a big pinch of salt and pepper. Once the onions are caramelized, stir them in. Continue to stir until everything is combined - it will come together. Taste the dip and if you need more salt, add it in.

This stays great in the fridge if you make it ahead of time - it will thicken up a bit. It is also great served immediately. Serve with chips, crackers, pretzels, veggies - anything!

Creamy Vegan Caramelized Onion Dip

Tbsp apple cider vinegar

Tbsp tamari

Tbsp white miso paste

maple syrup

(12 oz.) package soft silken tofu

lemon juice*

Pita bread, tortilla chips,

Sliced veggies ((we like cucumber))

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and 1/2 tsp salt (adjust amount if altering default number of servings), and cook, stirring every 5 minutes, for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and caramelized. Reduce the heat to medium-low as needed to prevent burning.

In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, tamari or soy sauce, miso, and maple syrup. Add this mixture to the onions, scraping any browned bits off the bottom of the skillet, and stir well. Cook for another 5 minutes, until flavorful and browned. Let cool slightly.

In a bowl, whisk together the silken tofu, lemon juice (optional — see notes below), and remaining 1/2 tsp salt (adjust amount if altering default number of servings). Fold the onions into the tofu mixture until combined. Taste and adjust as needed, adding more tamari or salt for saltiness or apple cider vinegar for brightness.

Serve warm with pita bread, tortilla chips, crackers, and/or sliced veggies. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color.

Store leftover dip in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Not freezer friendly.

It has a rich onion taste and is fit for food dishes like French onion soup. Yellow onions are typically available throughout the year. This onion is higher in sulphur than the white onion, which gives it a stronger, more complex flavour. A dozen varieties of yellow onion are grown, following the time of year....

Peel and thinly slice onions.

In a skillet over medium heat melt the butter and then add the onions. Toss to coat with butter and cover with lid. We need to &quot;sweat&quot; the onions to cut down on cooking time. Cook for 5 minutes and then turn heat to Low, stir and continue cooking covered for another 5 minutes.

Remove lid, add the sugar, salt, thyme, wine and Worcestershire sauce. Stir through and continue to cook uncovered on Low for another 15 minutes, stirring often. Onions should be a rich golden to dark brown. Remove from heat to cool.

Either use an immersion blender to puree the onions or transfer to cutting board and dice. Mix the caramelized onions and 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley with the sour and cream cheese mixture in bowl. Mix thoroughly.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes to set and firm up.

Transfer to serving bowl and top with fresh cracked black pepper and remaining parsley. Serve with chips or crackers of choice.

Heat the butter or oil in a large sauté pan on medium heat and add the onions. Stir the onions for 2 minutes, then reduce the heat to low.

Continue stirring the onions every 2 to 3 minutes, allowing them to caramelize on the bottom before stirring again. If they start to stick or brown, add a few tablespoons of water to rehydrate them and deglaze the pan.

Continue cooking the onions for approximately 45 minutes or until they&#x27;re cooked to your liking. When there&#x27;s one minute left on the onions, add the minced garlic and sauté for one minute. Once the onions have caramelized, transfer them to a small bowl and place them in the fridge to cool.

After the onions have cooled, add them to a mixing bowl with the sour cream, mayonnaise, chives, parsley, salt and pepper. Stir everything together until creamy and garnish with additional herbs.
