Foolproof Perfect Cheese Sauce

Remove from heat; add vinegar; whisk till smooth

Thick, creamy homemade cheese sauce is made with shredded cheddar cheese, butter, and whole milk. It&#x27;s the perfect topping for vegetables, chili dogs, and more!

Homemade Cheese Sauce Recipe

all purpose flour

butter

milk

onion powder

salt

cayenne

cheddar cheese

In a medium size sauce pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour, while continuously stirring, until flour becomes fragrant and starts to turn lightly tan in color.

Keep stirring while slowly pouring in the milk. Continue to stir/whisk to remove any lumps. Add onion powder, salt and cayenne.

Once sauce begins to thicken, add the cheese and continue stirring until cheese is melted and blended. Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Irresistibly delicious drizzled on everything from steamed broccoli to baked potatoes, in macaroni and cheese or as a dipping sauce!

Melt the butter in a medium sauce pan over medium heat.  Once it&#39;s melted add the flour and whisk it continually until it&#39;s dissolved.  Then continue to whisk it for one minute.  This will cook off the flour flavor.  Add the garlic powder, salt, pepper and the cayenne if using.  Slowly pour in the milk, whisking continually to prevent lumps.  Increase the heat to medium-high and continue whisking until the mixture comes to a low simmer (do not boil).  Continue to whisk until the mixture has thickened. Add the shredded cheese and whisk until it&#39;s melted.  Add more salt and pepper to taste.   Serve immediately.This will keep in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 3 days.  Makes roughly 2 cups of cheese sauce.Reheat on the stovetop over low heat, stirring frequently.  If the sauce is too thick, add a little milk.

Holy yum this is good!  And dangerous because I could so easily eat the entire batch with a spoon!  This recipe's a keeper!

I chuckled when I saw this recipe. As a bride in 1970, I discovered that my new husband did not like most vegetables. I, myself, had been raised in a gardening family with a huge variety of veggies that were on the table with every meal. I couldn't imagine a meal without them. But there's only so many times I could serve peas, green beans, carrots, and potatoes. So in order to get my new husband to "like" veggies better, I started serving them with his favorite cheddar cheese sauce. I didn't need sauce, but his veggies were drowning in thick cheddar cheese sauce. He ate them to please me. But over time, he actually started liking more veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, kale). Somewhere by the time our 3 children began eating at the table with us, hubby didn't need cheese sauce any more. And he set a good example for the children by eating his veggies without complaint. I rarely make cheese sauce these days, although mac-n-cheese with hamburger in it is a favorite way to use that wonderful sauce. Your recipe is identical to mine, so I know it is good!

Yummy!  I'm embarrassed to say that I've never made my own cheese sauce before, but I am NOT going to admit that I've just used the jarred stuff from the store whenever I've needed it, LOL!  Had it occurred to me how quick and easy it is to make yourself I would have done this sooner.  Turned out perfectly: smooth, creamy and oh so delicious!
