This recipe of Chocolate Gravy has been around for years. It's perfect for a sweet breakfast.

Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits

sugar

cocoa

all-purpose flour

carnation evaporated milk

cinnamon

salt

vanilla

butter

Nuts (optional)

In a medium saucepan, stir together sugar, cocoa, flour, and cinnamon and salt.   With a wire whisk or spoon stir in milk a little at a time until ingredients are wet.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. (This will burn easily so be sure to stir).  Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla until smooth.  Pour into a bowl and top with nuts if desired.  Serve over warm biscuits.

Chocolate Gravy

cocoa powder

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

Whisk in the flour and continue whisking until it browns just a little.

Add sugar and salt. Stir it quickly so it doesn&#39;t burn or scorch.

Add cocoa powder and stir.

Add the boiling water and whisk continually until smooth.

Add the milk and whisk again.

Let the sauce get hot, but don&#39;t let it boil (unlike pudding). Keep whisking until it just starts to thicken. When you feel it getting thicker, or see just a few bubbles, remove it from the heat.

Add the vanilla and stir to combine.

Let it cool just a bit (sauce will continue to thicken as it cools).

Pour the chocolate gravy over the top of the biscuit, pancakes, waffles, or eat by the spoonful. Enjoy!

Southern Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy is an Arkansas favorite and a special breakfast treat for all ages! Tender, flaky southern buttermilk biscuits are smothered in a rich homemade chocolate sauce for a wonderfully unique start to the day that is truly Southern!

Southern Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy

Tablespoons all-purpose flour

Tablespoons salted butter

Tablespoon baking powder

baking soda

Tablespoons butter

buttermilk (cold)

Preheat oven to 450°F.  

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.  

Using a pastry cutter or food processor, cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until crumbs about the size of peas form. Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk, then stir with a spatula or fork just until the dough starts to come together.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 5 or 6 times. Pat into a rectangle then fold the left third over, then the right side over into an envelope shape. Pat down, turn the dough a quarter turn, and repeat the folding process once more before patting the dough into a 1-inch thick rectangle.

Cut out biscuits using a circle biscuit cutter, pressing straight down without twisting the cutter, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 14-16 minutes until the tops are golden.

Remove the rolls from the oven and brush with the melted butter, if desired.

Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

In a large skillet or sauce pan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt until there are no lumps. 

Pour the milk into the dry ingredients and whisk until combined, then cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until slightly thickened, about 7 to 10 minutes. 

Remove the chocolate gravy from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla until the butter is melted and combined with the sauce. Serve immediately over buttermilk biscuits.

This is such a fun spin on biscuits and gravy for people with a sweet tooth! My husband is a biscuits and gravy nut, and he's made the classic sausage gravy kind for me (once, because holy heart attack, lol). This seems like a less aggressive approach ;)

I used to know a woman from Arkansas who made this - and she brought it to a potluck brunch mutual friends gave. All of us Northeasterners were quite startled - but it was so good, we just lapped it up!  I'm delighted to have a recipe for it now. (And yes, I'm still wrapping my mind around it - but as you say, it's hardly different  from the many other ways people serve chocolate at breakfast!)

Thick chocolate gravy is as good as it sounds. Pour it over warm biscuits, or on anything else your heart desires!

Add the milk and mix until well combined.

Pour the mixture into a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the texture is similar to gravy. About 7-10 minutes

Remove from the heat and add the butter and vanilla. Stir.

Spoon the chocolate gravy over warm biscuits.

This sounds delicious.  I was wondering if I could substitute the milk with heavy cream for a smoother texture?  Also would you happen to have a recipe for white chocolate gravy?  Thanks.

Made this as a "syrup" for waffles with the family. It's pretty much pudding. It was tasty - like homemade chocolate pudding. Everyone agreed. 😊 (Also, to thicken, just cook it longer; like you would any gravy, roux, or béchamel.)

This chocolate gravy is yummy! It's a little too sweet for me and too thin for the Mr., so next time we make it, we'll use half a cup of sugar and a little more flour. Everybody has different tastes and this recipe makes it easy to adjust and make. Thanks for sharing it with us
