Cornbread Dressing is a classic southern dish served especially during the holiday season. Moist and delicious, cornbread dressing makes the perfect side dish!

Southern Cornbread Dressing

Preheat oven to 350º F.

Crumble all of the cornbread and biscuits (or white bread slices) into a very large bowl. Add salt, pepper, eggs, onion, celery, butter, cream of chicken soup, and chicken stock. Stir until well-combined.

Pour dressing into two 9x13 baking dishes and bake until lightly browned, about 30 - 45 minutes. To test doneness, shake casserole dish lightly. If the center of the dressing moves, then the dressing is not cooked through in the center. Continue to bake until the dressing is set throughout.

Black Folks Chicken And Dressing

oz heavy whipping cream

sage (ground)

parsley (finely chopped)

chicken stock (or chicken broth)

egg (large)

oz chicken (skinless cooked chicken thighs,

Preheat the conventional oven or Instant Pot Omni Plus oven to bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes (although you may not use all of this time for melting the butter).

Place the 4 tablespoons of butter in an 8-inch skillet and melt in the oven for approximately 5 minutes.

While the butter is melting, combine the Jiffy cornbread mix, sugar, cream cheese, and heavy cream in a medium-size mixing bowl.

Pour the melted butter from the skillet into the mixing bowl and mix all the ingredients together.

Pour the cornbread mixture into the skillet.

Bake at 350 degrees F. In the conventional oven for 20-25 minutes. Instant Pot Omni Plus oven for 15-18 minutes.

When the baking time has finished, allow the cornbread to cool for approx 10 minutes.

Cut the bread lengthwise and then across into 1-inch bread cubes and set aside.

Grease an 8″ or similar-sized baking dish and set it aside.

Remove the lid from the Instant Pot and turn on the sauté setting for 8 minutes.

With the lid off, melt ½ a cup of butter.

Add the chopped onion, celery, thyme, rosemary, and sage.

Stir to coat the vegetables in the herbs and melted butter and then sauté until they soften and slightly brown.

Add the shredded chicken, chicken stock, salt, and pepper to the inner pot’s simmer, and stir to combine.

Remove the chicken and herb mixture from heat and set aside.

Allow the mixture to cool to the touch so that it can be mixed with the egg. (You don’t want the egg to cook from the residual heat and scramble!)

While the herbs are cooling off, beat the egg with the parsley in a medium-sized bowl.

Gently fold in the cornbread cubes to coat with the egg.

Pour the cooled chicken and herb mixture into the egg mixture.

Transfer the mixture to the pre-greased baking dish.

Cut the 2 tablespoons of butter into small pats and place them all around on top of the dressing.

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350 degrees F. 35 minutes in the conventional oven. In the Instant Pot Omni Plus oven for 30 minutes.

Uncover and bake until golden, 10-15 more minutes (conventional oven), 10 minutes (Instant Pot Omni Plus oven).

Serve this baked chicken and dressing recipe warm, and enjoy!

Optional – serve with gravy on top.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, crumble the cornbread and bread slices into large chunks.

In a medium skillet, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat. Add the onion, celery, and sage. Cook, stirring frequently, until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the remaining 6 tablespoons of butter and stir until melted. Transfer the onion mixture to the bowl with the cornbread.

To the cornbread-onion mixture, add the chicken stock, beaten eggs, salt, and pepper, and stir just until just combined. Spoon into the prepared baking dish.

Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown and the mixture is set. Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Cover and refrigerate any leftovers for up to 4 days.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish or spray with nonstick cooking spray. Brown the sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until no longer pink, using a wooden spoon to break up the meat; drain off fat. Add butter, celery, and onion to the skillet with the sausage; cook until tender. Stir in the thyme, rosemary, and sage; cook for 1 more minute.

In a large bowl, stir together the sausage mixture, cornbread, cubed bread or biscuits, broth, eggs, parsley, salt, and pepper. You can add a little bit of extra broth, if necessary, so that the mixture is very moist. Remember, the cornbread and biscuits will absorb the liquid and it will continue to dry out in the oven as well. Transfer the stuffing mixture to the prepared baking dish.

Bake until lightly browned and set, about 30-40 minutes. If the stuffing starts to look too dry or too dark on top, tent loosely with foil and continue baking until done.

Grease an 8″ or similar-sized baking dish, transfer the set-aside cornbread cubes to the pre-greased dish, and then set aside the cornbread cubes.

Pour the egg and parsley mixture over the cubed cornbread in the set-aside baking dish, and gently fold in the mixture evenly with the bread cubes. 

Then, pour the cooled herb mixture into the cornbread and egg mixture, evenly distributing with your pour.

Cut the 1 tablespoon of butter into small pats and place them all around on top of the dressing.

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes in the conventional oven. Bake for 30 minutes if using the Omni Plus oven.

Uncover and bake until golden, 10-15 more minutes (conventional oven) or 10 minutes (Omni Plus oven).

This gluten free cornbread stuffing recipe will revolutionize your holiday (or everyday!) table. It’s rich and savory with onion, celery, sage and thyme, with irresistible sweetness from cornbread. It’s technically a cornbread dressing since it’s baked in its own dish, giving it a delicious crispy top, but you could stuff it inside a turkey or chicken (or roasted squash—see the tips below) if you prefer. You’ll need to start by making a batch of this Easy Skillet Cornbread (which can be made with gluten-free flour or regular flour). You can make the cornbread the day before (cover it and let it sit at room temperature), or you can make it months ahead and freeze it! For a vegetarian stuffing, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.

Make a batch of the skillet cornbread and let it cool (you can make the cornbread the day before, or you can even make it a month or two ahead and freeze it!).

Cut the cornbread into 1 1/2- to 2-inch cubes (you should have about 10-11 cups). Put the cornbread cubes into a large bowl.

Preheat the oven to 350˚F (175˚C). Spritz a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or rub it with butter.

Make the cornbread

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and celery, and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are golden and tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, sage and thyme. Cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Scrape the aromatics into the bowl with the cornbread.

Cook the aromatics

Add the chicken broth, milk, egg, parsley, kosher salt and pepper to taste. Fold to combine (some of the cornbread will crumble and that’s okay, but try to keep some cubes intact). Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and dot with the butter. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake 30 minutes.

Remove the foil, increase the oven temperature to 400˚F (200˚C), and continue baking until lightly toasted and golden brown on top, about 15-20 minutes longer. Serve warm.

Assemble and bake

This is the best stuffing I have ever tasted!  I halved the recipe and cannot wait to make the other half soon!

As a GF girl, it's been hard to find really good stuffing. I've used all the boxed brands but this year, decided to make my own. I'd planned on traditional but when my dad said he was making cornbread stuffing for his dinner, the challenge was accepted!  I found this recipe, tried it and LOVED IT.  It was a hit at my house!
