Not too sweet or too tart, this cosmopolitan cocktail recipe is perfect to serve one or many. We like to use unflavored or citrus flavored vodka in this. If you can, since there is quite a lot of vodka in the recipe, choose vodka that is medium priced or that&#8217;s even top-shelf. We like to use Stolichnaya. We love adding a little orange peel to this. Sure, it may look like an unnecessary garnish, but if you do it right, it’s adds a little sweetness and as you go into to take a sip of the cosmopolitan cocktail, you’ll get orange essence, which hides the strength and scent of the vodka. When you add the orange peel, peel it over the drink. This way, any oils that spray out from the orange, fall into the drink. Rubbing the edges of the glass doesn’t hurt either.

Perfect Cosmopolitan Cocktail

(1/4 cup) vodka

(1 tablespoon) triple sec, Grand Marnier or Cointreau

(1 1/2 teaspoons to 3 teaspoons) fresh lime juice

One 2-inch orange peel/twist

This was great! Very balanced. Two oz of vodka is perfect in my opinion. You're right - it must be fresh squeezed lime. The bottled stuff ruins it.

I love Cosmos and this is my go-to recipe and has been for a number of years. I use GranGala (a less expensive version of Gran Marnier) and during the holidays when I have my homemade Spiced Apple Cranberry relish on hand, I add a very little dollop of that to my shaker.

Excellent balance for a Cosmo!!  This is my go to now for making them.  Really really good!!!  Not too sweet and not too sour.  I didn't think at all it was too strong either!  Nice!

My (wife's) tastes tend to gravitate to more sweet and less alcohol. I add 1/4 oz simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water ) and beef up cranberry juice a bit. 1.5 oz vodka, 1/2 oz Triple Sec, 1 oz cranberry juice, 1/2 oz lime juice, 1/4 oz simple syrup.

Cosmopolitan Cocktail (New &amp; Improved!)

(2 tablespoons) vodka

(2 tablespoons) 100% cranberry juice (do not use sweetened!)

(1 tablespoon) Cointreau

(1 tablespoon) lemon juice

lime wedge

maple syrup (or simple syrup)**

For the garnish: lime wheel (optional)***

Place the vodka, cranberry juice, Cointreau, lemon juice, and syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake 15 seconds until cold. Strain the liquid into a martini glass.

Squeeze with the lime wedge and serve, garnished with a lime wheel if desired. 

LOVE it that you so well-addressed the importance of 100% cranberry. Roughly a third the sugar of your 100% 'Juice' Cranberry 'Cocktails'. By wording it like that, they get away, by the letter of the law, with making people think it's 100% cranberry. Anyway, I usually do regular vodka and lime, which is great. But this time, per your suggestion, used Stoli Oranj (I had a couple 50 mls on hand haha), with lemon instead on lime. And a tsp less of Cointreau (always have that on hand). It is perfection. But OTOH, I'm not sure now whether it's the citrus vodka or the lemon vs lime (or both) that makes such a big difference. Oh, I always add a couple dashes of Angostura orange bitters. Optional for most, but you should really try it. If you do, you'll probably do it all the time from now on. :-D

Cosmopolitan Drink { Cosmo Cocktail }

80 ml | ⅓ cup vodka (or lemon vodka)

Grand Marnier

60 ml | ¼ cup cranberry juice

lime juice (or

orange peel (to garnish)

120 ml | ½ cup freshly squeezed blood orange juice

80 ml | ⅓ cup vodka (I used Żubrówka)

60 ml | ¼ cup Cointreau

orange bitters

blood orange slices to garnish (or orange peel)

Put two martini or coupe glasses in the freezer to chill.

Add all the ingredients to your cocktail shaker together with a large handful of ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

Double strain into the two chilled glasses.

Cut a small piece of orange zest. Hold over the glass with a match or lighter in your other hand.

Bend the orange peel to release a fine spray of bitter oils a short distance from the flame and watch them catch alight. Drop the peel into your glass and enjoy.

Classic Cosmopolitan

Double strain the cocktail between the two glasses. Garnish with a ribbon of orange peel or a thin slice of blood orange.

Stir all ingredients except orange peel into a large pitcher. 

When ready to serve, add ice to a cocktail shaker and shake each serving before pouring into a martini glass.
