Mexican Crema is a slightly thick, tangy, milk-flavored cream made with only four ingredients! Drizzle over enchiladas, chilaquiles and more. A perfect condiment to balance spicy dishes.

Mexican Crema

heavy cream

buttermilk

lime juice

tsp kosher salt

Heat heavy cream to room temperature in a small saucepan. Remove from heat and add buttermilk. Stir and pour into a jar and seal (I use a mason jar).

Keep jar in warm place (on counter or on top of refrigerator) for 12-24 hours.

Add lime juice, salt and seal again. Shake to mix until well combined.

Keep refrigerated or use right away. Good refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

Homemade Crema Mexicana Recipe

sour cream

In a microwave safe container, heat heavy cream for 40 seconds. Meanwhile, stir together sour cream and buttermilk in a glass bowl.

Add heavy cream, stirring until smooth. Mixture will be watery, but you will notice it starting to thicken already while stirring.

Allow to sit in a warm place, set lid loosely on the top, or use plastic or aluminum foil. Allow to breath, but to keep covered and free from any floating particles near by, especially if placed outside. Do not let crema mexicana go over 100 degrees.

Allow to sit for 4-6 hours to thicken. Add flavor, if desired, using a stick blender.

Drizzle over your favorite Latin dish.

Blending in cumin,&nbsp;cilantro, chipotle peppers, lime and/or lemon juice or zest to flavor your crema are all optional.

Oh, how interesting. I can put this on tacos and nachos and all my favorite Mexican dishes. Lovely. Can't wait to try this.

I love using Mexican crema on enchiladas, taquitos and nachos. We use it once a week and this recipe is so much better than the store bought kind.

Mexican crema, with its slightly tangy and sweet flavor similar to crème fraîche, is perfect for enhancing tacos, enchiladas, and chilaquiles. Easily make this delectable condiment at home with just a few ingredients.

heavy cream (best quality)

salt (OPTIONAL)

In a small glass bowl, mix the heavy cream and buttermilk. Stir well to combine the ingredients.

Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.

Let it sit in a warm place in your kitchen for 8 to 12 hours. The cream will thicken as the heat activates the whey protein and slightly ferments it. The exact time may vary depending on the ambient temperature.

After 8-12 hours, check the consistency of the crema. It should be thick but still pourable. If it&#39;s not thick enough, let it sit a bit longer, checking every few hours.

Transfer the crema to a clean, airtight container, add salt if using it, or other flavorings if desired, place a lid, and refrigerate. 

This recipe is straightforward and only requires a few minutes to mix. However, the secret lies in letting the crema rest and in the quality of the ingredients. 

I make this Crema at least twice a month. It is my go to recipe. The flavor is absolutely wonderful with a slight hint of lime.

Having lived in Mexico for many many years I'm always surprised when recipes call for sour cream because I know that is not even available in Mexico. So thank you for this recipe, it just so happens I make my own cultured buttermilk and always have organic heavy cream in the fridge, so now I can have my crema anytime I feel like it!
