A Cuban sandwich is not much more than a gussied-up ham and cheese toastie. Here three meats are pressed with cheese, pickles, and mustard until toasty and warm.

Cuban Sandwiches Recipe

(60 milliliters) yellow mustard

(170 grams) sliced Swiss cheese

(170 grams) thinly sliced dill pickles

(220 grams) sliced honey ham

(170 grams) leftover Cuban-style roast pork

(115 grams) sliced Genoa salami (optional; see note)

(25 grams) butter

Preheat a panini press or a large cast iron skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lay bread, open side up, on a work surface and spread the bottom and top halves with mustard. Layer bottom and top halves with Swiss cheese. Working only on bottom halves, layer on all of the pickles, ham, roast pork, and salami (if using). Close sandwiches, pressing gently.

Butter top and bottom of panini press and press sandwiches with moderate pressure until crisp on both sides, about 8 minutes. If using a cast iron skillet or griddle, melt half of butter in pan and add sandwiches. Use a second pan to press on them as the first side crisps. When crisp, flip sandwiches, add remaining butter, swirl to coat, and continue cooking while pressing until crisp on both sides, about 10 minutes total. Slice sandwiches in half diagonally and serve immediately.

Crispy and buttery, Cuban panini are so, so good with succulent homemade pulled pork, deli ham, dill pickles, mustard and Swiss cheese.

Spread mustard and mayonnaise (if using) on all four slices of bread. On two slices of bread layer: 1 slice cheese, 1 slice ham, pork, pickles, 1 slice ham, and one slice cheese, in that order. Top with remaining bread.

Grill in panini grill, pressing down firmly, until golden brown and cheese is melted. If you use a skillet, press down on the sandwich with a large spatula or another heavy skillet while grilling.

The ultimate Cuban sandwich recipe piled high with ham, cheese, roasted pork and pickles. These sandwiches are perfect for a hearty meal, and they happen to be super easy to make!

Place the olive oil, orange juice, lime juice, garlic, oregano, cumin, salt and pepper in a bowl.  Whisk to combine.

Place the pork in the bowl and spoon the marinade over the top. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 6 hours.

Preheat a grill or skillet to medium high heat. Add the pork and cook for 7-9 minutes per side or until a meat thermometer registers 145 degrees F.

Let the pork rest for 5 minutes, then thinly slice the meat.

Cut the loaf of bread in half lengthwise. Cut the bread crosswise into 4 equal sized pieces.

Place half of the cheese slices on the bottom pieces of bread. Top with layers of ham, pork and pickles.

Add the rest of the cheese on top of the pickles. Spread the mustard over the top pieces of bread, then place the tops on each sandwich.

Melt the butter in a pan. Place one sandwich in the pan. Use a heavier pan, such as a cast iron skillet to press down on the sandwich. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side or until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted. Repeat the process with the remaining sandwiches.

You can also cook your sandwiches in a panini press according to manufacturer instructions.

Cut the sandwiches in half, then serve.

Make the pulled pork: In a medium bowl, mix together the pepper, cumin, oregano, garlic, and lime juice. Set aside.

Make a few incisions, 1-2 inches (2-5 cm) deep, on both sides of the pork butt, cutting against the grain. Sprinkle generously with salt all over, make sure to season inside the incisions.

Transfer the pork butt to a roasting dish, and pour the marinade all over. Make sure the pork is well coated, including inside the incisions. Cover and marinate for 8-10 hours, or overnight.

Roast the pork, covered, for 8-10 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily falls apart when prodded with a fork or tongs.

Let cool enough to handle, then remove any bones, and shred the pork with tongs. Keep in the fridge up to 5 days.

Make the Cuban sandwich: Preheat the oven to 350˚F (180˚C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Set the bread open face on the prepared baking sheet and spread the mustard over one side. Top with the Swiss cheese. Brush the garlic oil on the other side of the bread. Top with the ham. Arrange the pulled pork over the cheese.

Toast in the oven for 2 minutes, or until the cheese melts. Add the pickles and press the sandwich.

Cover the inside and outside of the buns with the mayonnaise. Fill the buns with the remaining ingredients. Press lightly on the sandwiches to close them.

In a cast iron grill pan over medium-high heat, cook the sandwiches on both sides until the cheese has melted and the buns are golden. Serve immediately.

Swiss Cheese

Salami ((small rounds))

Deli Ham ((small rounds or pieces))

Petite Dill Pickles ((or pickle slices))

On each wooden skewer, layer on a small pickle, piece of Salami (folded), piece of Ham (folded), and Swiss cheese cube.

These Cuban Sliders are a fun appetizer version of the classic Cuban sandwich!

Cuban Sliders

Hawaiian rolls

Worcestershire sauce

lb pulled pork

dill pickle slices (or dill pickle chips)

unsalted butter

Tbsp minced garlic

Tbsp everything bagel seasoning

Preheat oven to 400°F and lightly grease a 9x13&quot; baking pan.  Set aside.

Add package of rolls to your cutting board and using a serrated knife (like a bread knife), carefully slice across the rolls, horizontally, keeping one hand on top of the rolls to steady them. 

Once sliced, keep the rolls connected to each other and lift the entire top section off of the bottom section. Add the bottom section of the rolls to the prepared baking pan.

In a small mixing bowl, combine mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and 3 Tbsp of the melted butter.  Spread half of the mustard mixture over the bottom half of the rolls in the baking pan.

Add ham slices on top of the mustard, then add the pulled pork on top of the ham.  Top that with the cheese slices and pickles.

Spread remaining mustard mixture over the cut side of the top half of the rolls, then add top half of rolls, cut side down, on top of the pickles.

In another small mixing bowl, add remaining 5 Tbsp melted butter and minced garlic.  Brush mixture over the top of the rolls.  Sprinkle with everything seasoning.

Cover loosely with foil and bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes.  Uncover and bake another 5 minutes, or until hot and golden.

I love your recipe and have made it quite often.  The only thing I do  different is separate the meat, cheese, etc. onto individual sandwich squares and slice all the sandwiches just prior to baking. This is due to all my knives being too dull to cut thru the layers at the end (maybe I'll get new knives for Xmas, lol!)  Thx for the recipe!

Vegan Cuban Style Sandwich Sliders

Make the caramelized onions (if using). Heat olive oil in a saucepan or frypan on medium heat and add the sliced onions and salt. Cook stirring occasionally on medium/low heat partially covered until melted and caramelized which could take up to 20 minutes. Set aside.

Butter a 13x9 baking dish (or one that fits the shape of your rolls snugly) and preheat your oven to 350°.

Make the butter and mustard sauce: grate your onions on the small homes side of a box grater or mince finely in a small food processor or by hand and add to the rest of the ingredients and mix together well with a small whisk.

Most slider rolls come in the package not sliced so carefully with a serrated knife, cut the rolls evenly in half. Place the bottom half in the buttered dish and layer with ham, caramelized onions (if using), cheese then pickle slices and end  with the roll tops.

Brush the vegan butter and mustard sauce all over the top with a small pastry brush or spoon and make sure to coat the sides as well. Cover the entire dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes then uncover and bake for five additional minutes to brown the rolls a bit. All ovens vary so it could take more or less time depending on using convection heat and your oven brand. If the cheese doesn’t look melted enough bake for a few more minutes. Cut the sliders out all the way through then serve immediately.

Quick and Easy Cuban Breakfast Sandwich

English Muffin (25 carbs for mine)

Tbsp yellow mustard (15 g)

tsp honey mustard (4 g)

Greek pork

deli ham (28 g)

reduced fat Swiss cheese

Dill Pickles

Arugula

onions (recipe here)

mint (optional)

Heat a nonstick skillet to medium high heat. Crack an egg on one side and let it fry for a minute. Add 50 grams of your leftover pork on the other side of the pan to warm it up.  Top the meat with swiss cheese to let it melt. Flip your egg and turn off the pan to let the other side of the egg cook just a bit. Add your ham to the pan to heat it up real quick in the residual heat of the hot pan. 

Toast the english muffin. Spread with yellow mustard and honey mustard. Top with the cheesy pork, the warm ham, and the fried egg. Add pickles and pickled onions if you love them! I always add some arugula and fresh mint if I’ve got it!

I made these this morning and Oh. Em. Gee!!! I think this is the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had! Better than anything in a restaurant or cafe! Mind blown! 🤯🤯🤯 I’m a huge fan of meal prepping. Do you think (minus the arugula) these would freeze well?
