My mom's super easy, no fuss Sri Lankan devilled chicken recipe that everyone craves. A dish that you should definitely try.

Sri Lankan Devilled Chicken

Chicken

chili powder

Black pepper powder

turmeric powder

lemon/lime juice

salt

garlic

ginger

chili paste

chili flakes

ketchup / chili sauce

water

sugar

Banana peppers/ Hungarian wax peppers

red onion

corn starch dissolve

Mix all the ingredients from the marinade list above with chicken. Leave it aside for 30 mins or up to 2 hours  (or up to 12 hours in the fridge)

Now air-fry them until chicken pieces are golden.  It took me  14mins on 390F in my Ninja air fryer. You may need more or less time than this depending on your air fryer and the size of your chicken pieces.
Make sure you do not overcrowd the air fryer pan and flip them once to get even browning.

Now heat a wok or pan. Add some oil and let it heat. When the oil is hot, add your finely chopped ginger and garlic pieces.

Now add chili flakes and chili paste. Mix everything together. 

Then add 1/4 cup of water, mix and let it come to simmer. (You can add more if you want more gravy)

When the sauce is simmering you add sugar. Taste and adjust salt if needed. Then add your fried chicken pieces and mix well.

Then add your peppers and onions. Mix well.

(Optional) Add the cornstarch slurry. This will add a nice glossy look to the sauce and chicken pieces. Also if you have some gravy, this will thicken that up. You can also add large chunks of tomatoes too at the end.

2 tablespoons of oyster sauce
2 tablespoons of soya sauce
4 tablespoons of tomato sauce
1 tablespoon of sugar(only if you need it to be slightly sweet for the kids)

Easy-to-make Sri Lankan-style devilled chicken recipe with step-by-step photos, useful info plus helpful tips.

Easy! Sri Lankan Devilled Chicken (Dewal Chiken)

chicken

tsp chili powder

tsp salt

soy sauce

tsp black pepper

garlic paste

ginger paste

tbsp vinegar (or lemon/lime juice)

tbsp plain flour

tbsp oil

tbsp chili powder

tbsp chili flakes

tbsp ketchup

tbsp sugar

onion

bell peppers (red & green, roughly chopped)

cherry tomatoes tomato (chopped)

Salt & pepper (to taste)

tbsp chili powder (optional)

Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces.

Marinate; garlic paste, ginger paste, chili powder, salt, vinegar (or lime/lemon juice), and soy sauce.

Coat generously with the marinade ingredients and set aside for about 30 min.

Add the flour. Mix well

Fry the marinated chicken pieces until cooked through.

Drain off excess oil and set aside.

Cut the vegetables; onion, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes.

Gather the ingredients for making the devilled fish. Garlic and ginger paste, chili powder, chili flakes, pepper, and salt for stir-frying. Mix together ketchup, soy sauce, sugar, and vinegar to make a sauce.

Heat the oil and saute the cut vegetables for about one minute. Immediately remove them from the pan with a slotted spoon.

Stir-fry the ginger and garlic paste until it starts to release its aroma. Stir constantly for a minute so that it doesn’t burn.

Add chili powder, chili flakes, salt, and pepper and stir constantly for a few seconds so that it doesn’t burn.

Add the sauce and cook until warmed through, for a minute.

Add the fried chicken pieces and stir-fry until they are well coated with the sauce.

Stir-fry the sauteed bell peppers, onion, and tomato for a minute. Season with salt & pepper as needed. Sprinkle with more red chili powder and flakes, if desired. Remove from heat. Serve hot with fluffy, long-grain white rice, and enjoy!
