The Best Oreo Dirt Cake Recipe (Dirt Pudding)

milk

vanilla pudding

Oreo cookies (divided)

butter (room temperature)

oz cream cheese (room temperature)

sugar

oz cool whip (thawed in the refrigerator)

Gummy worms (optional)

Remove 8 Oreos from the package and place on a cutting board.

Cut the cookies into small, ¼” pieces, set aside.

Put the remaining Oreos into the container of a food processor fit with an “S” blade.

Process until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You may need to pause, break apart cookies that get stuck to the blades, and continue processing.

If you don’t have a food processor, you can crush the Oreos with a rolling pin.

Set aside.

Crush the Oreos:

In a medium bowl, whisk together milk and pudding. Set aside in the refrigerator to solidify.

In the bowl of your standing mixer or with a hand-held mixer in a large bowl, cream together butter and cream cheese. Beat until well combined &amp; smooth (about 30-60 seconds).

Add powdered sugar and beat until smooth.

Add pudding to the butter/cream cheese mixture (make sure it has set before adding), and beat on low speed to combined.

Fold in cool whip until the mixture is homogenous (uniform throughout).

Make the pudding:

Layer the pudding mixture and cookies. Start by pouring 2 cups of pudding mixture into the bottom of a trifle dish and spread it until level.

Sprinkle ½ cup cookie crumbs and ¼ cup chopped cookies evenly over the pudding.

Repeat using 2 cups of pudding, ½ cup cookie crumbs and ¼ cup chopped cookies for each layer.

Add gummy worms to each layer as desired, or only add some to the top.

Be sure the final layer is cookie crumbs!

Refrigerate overnight before serving.

If you're using a large play pail to...

If you're using a large play pail to serve the pudding, you might want to place the whipped topping lid upside down in the bottom. This shortens the pail and makes it so the pudding will go all the way up to the top. Place a layer of Oreos at the bottom. Put a layer of the pudding mixture over top. Repeat until both are gone, beginning and ending with the Oreos. Arrange gummy worms on top. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight.

A simple and classic dessert that&#039;s easy to make, Dirt Pudding is given the spring makeover which is perfect for Easter.

In a large bowl, whisk together the instant pudding and the milk for 2 minutes or until beginning to thicken. Let stand for 5 minutes.

Beat together the cream cheese and powdered sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

Using a rubber spatula, fold the cream cheese mixture into the chocolate pudding.

Then fold in the Cool Whip (or whipped cream) until completely combined.

You can layer the dessert a number of ways, we used individual cups but you can use a trifle dish or rectangular baking dish.

Layer the dessert with alternating layers of cookie crumbs and pudding mixture, starting and ending with the crushed cookies.

Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight before serving.

Decorate with chocolate covered strawberries, sprinkles or frosting.

Easy Dirt Pudding Cheesecake Bars Dessert Recipe

Oreos (crushed (about 2 cups))

unsalted butter

cream cheese (softened)

chocolate pudding

sour cream

vanilla extract

Oreos (crushed (about 1 cup))

chocolate syrup

mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

gummy worms

Line a 9x9” square baking dish with parchment paper.

Make the crust by crushing Oreos in a food processor or zippered bag. Add the melted butter and mix with the crushed Oreos.

Press the Oreo crust into the prepared pan and press down.

Freeze the crust for at least 15 minutes while you make the cheesecake layer.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar together until smooth with a hand mixer.

Add the chocolate pudding and beat well.

Once smooth, add the sour cream and vanilla and mix until combined.

Stir in the crushed Oreos and a handful of gummy worms (about 1/2 cup).

Pour the cheesecake batter over the prepared crust.

Drizzle the chocolate syrup over the batter and add another handful of gummy worms (optional).

Fold the chocolate syrup and gummy worms into the batter while you press it into the pan.

Smooth the top, cover, and refrigerate for 4-6 hours (cheesecake can also be frozen)

Once the cheesecake bars are set, remove the cheesecake bars from the refrigerator and cut them into 9 bars (you could also cut them into 16 bars)..

For the topping, remove the middle of the Oreo and crush just the cookies in a zippered bag.

Melt chocolate chips in the microwave in 30 second increments until smooth (stirring between).

Spoon about 1 tablespoon of chocolate onto each cheesecake bar.

Top with crushed Oreos and garnish with a gummy worm (work 1-2 at a time so the Oreos and gummy worm stick to the chocolate before it hardens..

Once the chocolate has hardened, serve immediately or store in the refrigerator.

That, along with vanilla pudding, makes this simple dessert very rich and creamy. It adds some flavor too. This is a perfect dessert for any occasion and will disappear quickly. This was so, so yummy! I could have eaten half the dessert in one sitting! Thanks for a great recipe.  I used 1-1/2 T sugar in the whipped cream, and it was just the right sweetness. I did find that the pudding didn't quite set as firm as I thought it would, and I'm wondering if the amount of pudding mix the manufacturer puts in the boxes is now less than when she posted the recipe?  I think next time I'll reduce the milk to 3-1/4 C and see what that does.

This homemade chocolate pudding comes together in about 10 minutes on the stove. You'll want to make and assemble these pudding cups ahead of time so the chocolate pudding has time to thicken in the refrigerator. Crushed Oreo cookies and gummy worms turn the smooth and creamy from-scratch pudding into "dirt"!

Homemade Dirt Pudding Recipe

(42 grams) unsweetened natural or Dutch-process cocoa powder

(40 grams) cornstarch

salt

(1,080 milliliters) whole milk*

Tablespoons (43 grams) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

24–30 Oreo cookies (or about 1 standard package)

Make the pudding

Whisk sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt together in a medium saucepan and place the saucepan over medium heat. While whisking, slowly pour in the milk and whisk until combined.

Bring the mixture to a boil, whisking occasionally. This will take about 10 minutes and do not try to rush it by turning up the heat, as the pudding will not thicken properly. The mixture will begin to bubble around the edges, and then in the center. Once bubbling in the center, whisk constantly and allow to boil for 1 minute. The pudding should be thickened, and you&#8217;ll know it&#8217;s thickened enough if it coats the back of a spoon or spatula without dripping off.

Remove from heat, and then whisk in the butter and vanilla.

Pour into a heatproof bowl, let sit for 5 minutes, and then place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming on top. Refrigerate for 1 hour. The pudding will not be fully thickened at this point, as you still want it a little thin to assemble the pudding cups in step 6.

Place the Oreos in a food processor or blender and pulse into crumbs. 

Assemble the dirt dessert

It&#8217;s helpful to know that this recipe makes 4 cups of chocolate pudding, and you can make individual cups, a trifle, or assemble/serve in a 9-inch baking pan. The amount of pudding/Oreo crumbs in each cup really depends on the size of the cup (or other vessel) you are using. You&#8217;ll want to layer Oreo crumbs on the bottom, then pudding, Oreo crumbs in the middle, more pudding, and more Oreo crumbs on top. Start with a couple Tablespoons of Oreo crumbs in the bottom of each cup. Spoon 1/4 cup of pudding on top of the Oreo layer, then repeat with another couple of spoonfuls of Oreo crumbs, another 1/4 cup of pudding, and a final layer of Oreo crumbs. Place a few gummy worms in the top layer of Oreo crumbs.

Refrigerate uncovered for 3 more hours and up to 48 hours.

Cover and store leftover cups in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

This is such a great recipe! I just put the pudding in the cups, and it is soo perfect!! I love this recipe so much! This is the first time i've attempted homemade pudding, so i was nervous. For all you bakers wanting to try something for the first time, use Sally's Baking. All of her recipes are so easy and very well explained.

I absolutely love this pudding. I don't really go  by the cooking time, I normally cook it a bit longer  after the bubbles start in the middle. I don't make the pudding cups, I just make the pudding, and  pour into a  bowl to  cool down, then  put into the fridge and serve cold. 

As I milk cows, this is the perfect delicious way to use up leftover or older milk. The pudding's actually better with slightly older tasting milk that isn't as yummy to drink any more. 

My parents and siblings absolutely love the pudding and one recipe only lasts a very short time.
