Cornbread Dressing is a classic southern dish served especially during the holiday season. Moist and delicious, cornbread dressing makes the perfect side dish!

Southern Cornbread Dressing

buttermilk biscuits (or 3 slices of sandwich bread)

salt

black pepper

rubbed sage (optional)

eggs

onion

celery (diced)

butter (sliced)

cream of chicken soup

chicken stock

Preheat oven to 350º F.

Crumble all of the cornbread and biscuits (or white bread slices) into a very large bowl. Add salt, pepper, eggs, onion, celery, butter, cream of chicken soup, and chicken stock. Stir until well-combined.

Pour dressing into two 9x13 baking dishes and bake until lightly browned, about 30 - 45 minutes. To test doneness, shake casserole dish lightly. If the center of the dressing moves, then the dressing is not cooked through in the center. Continue to bake until the dressing is set throughout.

Dry cornbread and bread: Spread bread cubes onto large baking sheets and leave them out to dry for 1-2 days. If you&#39;re in a hurry you can dry it them in the oven at 250 degrees F for about 30-45 minutes, tossing every 10 minutes, until the bread is dry and stale.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 

Sauté Veggies: Add the butter to a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter has melted add the onion, celery, basil, thyme, and rosemary and cook for a few minutes until softened.

To a large mixing bowl add dried bread cubes. Pour in butter and Vegetable mixture.

Add broth: Gradually ladle the broth mixture onto the bread, tossing lightly as you go. Add more broth, just until everything is evenly moistened. Don&#39;t add too much broth or it will be more mushy and dense. Taste and add more herbs or salt, if needed. 

Bake: Pour mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish and bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Simple Cornbread Stuffing

herb-seasoned

½ sleeve saltine crackers (crushed)

chicken

eggs (beaten)

milk

salt and pepper (to taste)

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add celery and onion. Cook over medium-low heat until tender, about 10 minutes. (You don’t want them browned just tender)

In a measuring cup add milk and egg and beat until combined (set aside).

In a large bowl combine cornbread stuffing mix, herbed stuffing mix, saltine crackers, and celery and onion mixture. Stir to combine.

Next add in the milk and egg mixture, salt &amp; pepper to your taste.  Then slowly pour the broth/stock over the stuffing mixture and stir until completely mixed. You want the mix to be thick and very moist. A lot of this moisture will bake out as it cooks. I usually use all 6 cups of broth, but you can start with 4 cups and add to desired consistency.

Prepare Cornbread Dressing Mixture

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter or spray a 9x13-inch casserole dish.

Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.

Bake covered for 35 minutes, remove foil, and bake uncovered for another 10 to 20 minutes until golden brown and set.  Oven temperatures vary. Bake for a total of 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Oven Baked Instructions

Lightly grease or spray the slow cooker insert with cooking spray. You can also use a slow cooker liner for easy cleanup.

Pour the stuffing mixture into the prepared slow cooker, pressing gently to create an even layer.

Cover and cook on HIGH for 30 minutes, then turn down to LOW for 2.5 to 3.5 hours or until cooked through.

We usually serve traditional dressing at Thanksgiving dinner, but I think I will make this recipe instead this year. It looks absolutely delicious! :)
