Shepherd's pie is traditionally made with a ground-lamb filling, but we make ours with ground beef. The sauce is really simple and flavorful, but the best part is the insanely fluffy mashed potato topping. The whole dish is pretty much the definition of comfort food.

Bulletproof! I’m a rookie in the kitchen, and this has been a hit every time I’ve made it! I added a beef bouillon cube to the beef mixture to kick it up with some thyme, and I added some green onions and cheddar on top of the mash to spice it up a bit. To each their own but this a great foundation to follow! Thanks!

Actually, if you use ground beef instead of lamb it's called Cottage Pie.
I've always used ground beef. I added Worcestershire sauce because it adds a great flavor. Also used frozen peas and carrots. Since this is a recipe using beef I used beef stock not chicken, also added a little Knott beef bouillon for the extra richness. 
It was very tasty. We probably have Cottage Pie once every few months.

I used vegan beef and added soya cheese on top still 10/10 though.

Great recipe.  A little bit of history, if you make it with Lamb it’s called Shepherd’s Pie and if using beef, it’s called Cottage Pie.

We thought this was very good, but I do agree with others that it could use a little more flavor. I followed the recipe to the T, and might consider the following next time ... Add a T of worcestershire sauce, replace chicken broth with beef broth and perhaps use a full C, as opposed to 2/3 -- the liquid didn't make much gravy in my dish. That's it. It was nearly perfect!

I would definitely omit the thyme.  1 tsp. Overwhelming.  Otherwise would have been good. I think the Worcestershire makes sense.

we usually just use instant potatoes, beef mixed with corn and cheese for on top of the potatoes. It is still really good.

This was really good - easy to follow instructions. The fam loved it! I did add a few dashes of worchestershire and a glug of red wine to the broth mixture.

Amazing recipe!! I agree it was a bit bland on its own but I spiced up the potatoes with garlic powder and added some tomato paste and worcestershire sauce and it was perfect!! Will make again!

Delicious!  Added garlic powder when cooking beef, a dollop of tomato paste and a splash of Worcestershire and sprinkled a little shredded cheese on top.

This easy shepherd&#x27;s pie recipe (aka cottage pie) with ground beef is simple, gluten free, and uses only 6 ingredients! A cheap, make ahead freezer meal.

Easy Shepherd's Pie

lbs. yukon gold potatoes

butter (divided)

whole milk (or heavy cream)

onion (diced)

1.5-2 lbs lean ground beef (or turkey)

vegetables

kosher salt and black pepper (to taste)

Cover potatoes with cold water and 1 tablespoon of kosher salt in a large pot, and bring to a boil. Cook until potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.

While potatoes are cooking, sauté the diced onion in 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet until softened (about 2 minutes). Add the ground beef and sauté until JUST fully cooked, breaking it up with a spoon into small pieces (about 5-7 minutes). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Don&#x27;t overcook it or it will be dry (see notes).

When potatoes are soft enough to pierce easily with a fork, drain, and mash with 4 tablespoons butter and the milk (3/4 cup). Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Layer ground beef mixture, frozen vegetables, and mashed potatoes in a 9x13 baking dish. Alternatively, divide the ingredients into two smaller baking dishes to freeze one (see notes).

Use the back of a spoon to smooth the potatoes, leaving some ridges, or use a fork to &quot;rake&quot; a ridged pattern into the potatoes.

Melt remaining tablespoon butter and drizzle evenly on top of potatoes.

Bake at 425° F for approximately 30 minutes, or until potatoes begin to brown. Run the broiler for the last 5 minutes for extra crispy potatoes.

Turkey Sweet Potato Shepherd's Pie

1-1/2 lbs sweet potatoes (peeled, diced)

garlic

1% milk

chicken broth*

tbsp sour cream

kosher salt and pepper

93% turkey

onion

celery (chopped)

parsnip (diced)

garlic (diced)

oz mushrooms (diced)

oz frozen mixed vegetables

tbsp flour (leave out to make gluten-free)

tomato paste

Worcestershire sauce

tsp rosemary

salt and pepper

paprika

For the sweet potatoes: Boil sweet potatoes and garlic in a pot of salted water until cooked and soft. Drain and mash with chicken broth, milk, sour cream, salt and pepper.

Preheat oven to 400°F.

For the filling: In a large skillet brown the ground turkey about 5 minutes; season with salt and pepper. When cooked, set aside on a plate.

Add olive oil to the pan, then add the onion and sauté one minute. Add the celery, parsnip, salt and pepper to taste; cook about 12 minutes, until celery is soft.

Add garlic and mushrooms; sauté another 3-4 minutes. Add flour, salt and pepper and mix well.

Add frozen vegetables, chicken broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, cooked turkey, and mix well. Simmer on low about 5-10 minutes.

In 6 oven safe individual oven safe dishes (or a 9 x 12 baking dish) spread 1 cup of the meat mixture on the bottom of each dish.

Top each with 1/2 cup mashed sweet potatoes.

Use a fork to scrape the top of the potatoes to make ridges; sprinkle with paprika. (If making ahead you can freeze at this point**).

Bake 20 to 30 minutes or until potatoes turn golden and the filling is heated through. If baking in a large casserole dish, add more time as needed to heat through.

Remove from oven and let it cool 10 minutes before serving.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Cook potatoes according to package directions; set aside.

Brown beef and onion (optional) in a skillet on medium-high heat.

Drain and put back in skillet with carrots over medium-high heat.

Stir in flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.

Add broth. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes or until slightly thickened.

Spoon mixture into a lightly greased 11 x 7-inch glass backing dish.

In a mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, egg, 1 teaspoon salt (optional) and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. If using pre-cooked mashed potatoes, you may want to taste potatoes before adding the egg to see how they are seasoned. If they are already salted appropriately, you can omit the salt.

Spoon over beef mixture and smooth evenly across the dish.

Bake for 25 minutes.

Sprinkle with cheese, and bake an additional 5 minutes.

Garnish with parsley if desired.

Add the potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until fork tender, about 10-15 minutes. If you can easily insert a fork into the potatoes, then they are ready. 

Drain the water and mash the potatoes using a potato masher or a fork. Add butter, milk, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well until evenly mixed and set aside.

Prepare the Mashed Potato Topping:

While potatoes are boiling, heat olive oil in a cast-iron skillet (or other ovenproof skillet) for 2 minutes over medium-high heat until the hot oil sizzles. Add onion and carrots, and sauté until fragrant and tender, about 2-3 minutes.

Add ground beef and stir well to cook evenly until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Use a spatula to break up the beef into small pieces to help with even browning and cooking.

Stir in garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper and stir together until well combined.

Add flour and stir well until fully combined with the beef mixture. No dry flour should be visible.

Add peas and beef broth. Stir occasionally and bring the mixture to a simmer, about 2 minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for another 2 minutes until thickened to a desired consistency, stirring occasionally.

Make the Beef Mixture:

Use a spatula to spread the beef mixture into an even layer on the same skillet. Carefully add spoonfuls of the mashed potatoes on top, and spread it evenly on top using a fork.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top turns golden brown. Let cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Assemble and Bake the Shepherd's Pie:

My family loved this! I will definitely be making this again. The only thing I did different is to use frozen peas &amp; carrots. I didn't have any fresh carrots on hand.

In a large skillet over medium heat add the butter. Once melted add the onion and carrots. Cook until onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. 

Add the ground beef (or lamb) to the skillet and using a wooden spoon, break apart the meat. Add the garlic, parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook until the meat has browned, about 8 minutes. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, flour, and tomato paste. 

Add the beef broth, frozen peas, and frozen corn. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer and simmer for 5 minutes. Transfer the meat mixture to a 9&quot;x9” baking dish that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. 

Preheat oven to 375°F

Meat Filling

Place chopped potatoes in a large pot. Fill with water and place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Boil the potatoes until very fork tender. Drain the water. Mash the potatoes then add the butter, half and half, garlic powder, kosher salt, and pepper. Continue mashing until smooth and combined. 

Spoon the potato mixture on top of the meat and spread it into an even layer. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Yukon Gold potatoes (about 7-8 medium potatoes)

plain Greek yogurt or sour cream

milk of choice (or as needed)

sweet onion (finely diced)

peas (no need to thaw)

Start with the mashed potatoes topping. Peel and chop the 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes into big chunks. Place them into a large soup pot, covered with water. and stir in 1 tablespoon kosher salt.

Place the pot over high heat and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 minutes.

While the potatoes are cooking, make the filling. Heat the 1 tablespoon olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the 1 sweet onion, 2 sticks celery, 2 medium carrots and 3-4 cloves garlic for 5 minutes.

Add the 1 pound lean ground beef and cook, mincing the meat with the wooden spoon.

Once the meat starts to brown, sprinkle it with the 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 1 teaspoon dried thyme and season with Kosher salt and pepper. About 3-5 minutes.

Add the 2/3 cup chicken broth, 2/3 cup tomato passata and 1 cup frozen peas. Stir well to combine and simmer the sauce until it begins to thicken, around 5-7 minutes.

Transfer the sauce to an oven-safe dish and preheat the oven to 450F.

To make the mashed potatoes, drain the cooked potatoes and mash with the 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream, or sour cream, and 1/2 milk of choice. Season, if needed.

Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat mixture into the dish.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until bubbly. Broil for 2-4 minutes to give a nice charred top.
