How to make delicious and crispy falafel at home rivaling your favorite restaurants. After lots of kitchen tests, this falafel recipe has become our favorite way to make falafel. The recipe is straightforward, 100% plant-based (vegan), and the falafel tastes incredible. In addition to the active prep and cook time, you will need to soak dried chickpeas overnight. This can be done a couple days in advance, simply drain and pat dry the soaked beans, and then store, covered in the fridge until ready to make the falafel mix. Note on using canned chickpeas or cooked chickpeas: Canned chickpeas are cooked chickpeas. After testing, we have determined that canned or cooked chickpeas do not work as a direct substitute for soaked dried beans in this recipe. The falafel will fall apart in the oil. Recipe adaptations for using canned chickpeas or cooked chickpeas are shared in the article above.

Homemade Falafel

We have made this recipe now a few times and I can safely say it is my boyfriends favorite recipe - we made a triple batch last time! I do add a tiny bit of tahini to the recipe to help bind it and for flavor, however the first time I did not use it and had no issues with it holding together. They reheat perfectly in an air fryer. We make this recipe at least once a month!

This recipe is great! Most recipes suggest never to use canned, but I felt like these turned out great with so much less hassle and prep then soaking dry chickpeas! In addition to the recipe I also added a tablespoon of chopped cilantro to enhance the flavor. 

Also, I noticed some comments about them falling apart. Here is what I did: I opted to bake mine at 450 for 6 minutes on each side! Heat the pan alone for 5 minutes then prep the pan generously with oil, heat up the pan for 1 minute and then place the falafels in patty form! Turned out great and didn’t fall apart at all.

Turned out super yummy! I upped the spices and herbs by 1/2 teaspoon and increased the flour by 1 T in the falafel mixture, and let it sit covered in fridge for 2 hours before forming into balls and frying. I found a tzatziki recipe and made that instead of the yogurt sauce. It was super bomb! Will be making again

Honestly... this falafel recipe was SOO GOOD!! It was the first time we ever made falafels and they turned out amazing. We used the yogurt sauce, but didn't make the tahini sauce. The flavor of everything was on point!! One of our falafels did fall apart, but the rest came out fine. Tip: don't "roll" the falafels together in your palms; we found smushing them together in our hands made them more "packed" and easier to fry. About spoonfuls of the "dough" worked for us!!

I followed the recipe and mine also disintegrated in the oil. So I regrouped, added an egg and a tablespoon of tahini to the mixture and rolled them in breadcrumbs and they turned out great! I also used store-bought tzatziki and served in a pita with cucumbers, tomatoes and a squeeze of lemon.

I'll probably blend or mash my chickpeas first before I mix in all the other stuff for a more consistent texture the next time I make it  but was very easy to follow. We did the yogurt sauce and for real ty! Was great and a new staple in our little recipe book.

Everyone in my family enjoyed this.  They came out perfectly.  I made the yogurt sauce and it was good but I didn’t make the tahini sauce.  Will make again.  I might have processed the mixture more than indicated but my falafels held together well and did not fall apart at all.  I served them over Greek pasta salad over a bed of spinach.

These are out of this world. That tahini sauce is magical. It went from runny to a roasted garlic consistency in 30 seconds. This is, 100%, a keeper.

Did not stay together during cooking. Don’t use this recipe

Instructions are vague and unclear. Leaves a lot of guess work and trial and error.

You probably should chop the shallots ahead of time so they are evenly distributed and avoid over blending. 

The putting in the fridge should be a good amount of time at least 20 mins to help with forming the falafel. 

Use a small saucepan for the oil to save on waste and flip over the falafel halfway 4 mins at least on each side. Look for a darker brown to black to cook all the way through. 

I would make sure they sure each one is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick or they break apart easier unless you can submerge the entire falafel under the oil easily.

Probably need to replenish oil once.

They come out very standard for a falafel if done right. 

I would look at another website for a recipe that is not so general and vague.

Tasted great! I just rolled the mixture into balls after chilling it in he fridge for a while and they held together just fine.

The best authentic falafel recipe you can make at home! A simple combination of chickpeas, herbs and spices that&#x27;s blended together and fried (or baked). They&#x27;re crispy, soft and delicious! Watch the video above to see how I make them!

Most Delicious Falafel Recipe (Fried or Baked)

chickpeas

onion (roughly chopped)

parsley (roughly chopped (about a one large bunch))

cilantro (roughly chopped (about a one large bunch))

green chile pepper (serrano

salt

tsp black pepper

chickpea flour

tsp baking soda

Soak

The night before, soak the dried chickpeas in water. Make sure the water covers the chickpeas by 2-3 inches, as they&#039;ll triple in size.

Drain and rinse the chickpeas and add them to your food processor, along with the onion, parsley, cilantro, pepper, garlic, cumin, salt, cardamom and black pepper.

Pulse

Pulse the food processor several times until the mixture resembles the texture of coarse sand.

Stir

Transfer the falafel mixture to a bowl and add the chickpea flour and baking soda. Stir together, then cover or add a lid and refrigerate the mixture for 30 minutes to one hour.

Scoop

Use your hands, an ice cream scoop or falafel scoop to form the falafel into balls or patties. If you find the mixture is too wet, you can add another tablespoon of chickpea flour. If it&#x27;s too dry and crumbly, you can add a teaspoon or two of water or lemon juice.

Cook

Once the falafel are formed, you can cook them by your preferred method mentioned above. To deep fry the falafel, add about 3 inches of oil to a pot on medium heat. Heat the oil to 350F. Cook the falafel in batches (about 6-8 at a time) for 1-2 minutes or until golden.

Remove

Use a skimmer to check the color of the falafel and make sure they don&#039;t over cook. Then remove them to a paper towel-lined plate.

Serve

Serve the falafel immediately, while warm and crispy on the outside. They&#039;re delicious served with tahini sauce as well.

I've had my fair share of falafel on travels through Egypt, Israel and Jordan. I've had them in restaurants and on street corners (the best authentic street food). I've had them stuffed in gluten-free pita and on salads. And I've had them with slight variations and tweaks, though the recipe itself is fairly simple.

But here's how you make the best falafel recipe - add tons of herbs (double the normal amount) and a small amount of green pepper. This makes for an addictive flavor that's "a little something extra" but not spicy. Just insanely delicious.

Falafel are naturally vegan and vegetarian. You can then deep fry the falafel, pan fry or make baked falafel. It's up to you! Just don't forget to drizzle with my tahini sauce. ;) Enjoy!

The night before, soak the dried chickpeas in water. Make sure the water covers the chickpeas by 2-3 inches, as they&#x27;ll triple in size.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Drain and rinse the chickpeas and add them to your food processor. 

Add the onion, parsley, cilantro, pepper, garlic, cumin, salt, cardamom, black pepper, and baking soda to the food processor and pulse several times until it the texture becomes a fine grain. Then transfer the falafel mixture to a large mixing bowl and refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour.

Take the mixture out of the fridge and add the chickpea flour, water, and olive oil. Mix everything together with your hands until well combined.

Flatten the falafel mixture onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Gently press down with your hands to flatten.

Bake for 25 minutes.

Let the flatbread cool for about 10 minutes. Then slice it into individual pieces.

FALAFEL FLATBREAD | amazing vegan flatbread recipe

This Crispy Air Fryer Falafel recipe is easy to make in the air fryer and cooks up light, fluffy and so crispy. They&#039;re the perfect gluten-free vegan appetizer, side or top them over a salad without some tahini dressing. 

Air Fryer Falafel

onion

parsley

cilantro

yeast

tsp smoked paprika

tsp coriander

tbsp almond flour

Place drained chickpeas in a food processor with onion and garlic. Pulse for about 30 seconds until the chickpeas are mostly smooth.

Add lemon juice, parsley, coriander, nutritional yeast, paprika, cumin, ground coriander, salt and pepper. Blend again until smooth and combined. Then stir in the flour and baking soda.

Take a tablespoon-sized scoop of the mixture and roll into a ball or form into patties. Repeat with remaining mixture. It should make around 15 falafels.

Lightly coat falafel with avocado oil spray. Working in batches, place patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Turn the air fryer to 375F and cook or 12-13 minutes, flipping each one over half-way through.

Best served hot but will keep for 2-3 days in an airtight container in the fridge or freeezer for up to 3 months.

Falafel Recipe

Heat a thin layer of oil in a large frying pan on medium heat. Gently place patties on pan, work in batches as needed. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and hot through.

To pan fry:

Preheat oven to 350F. Place patties on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly coated and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping each one over half-way through.

How to make authentic Falafel from scratch using soaked chickpeas (not canned)  with Homemade Pita, Creamy Tahini Sauce, Pickled Turnips, Cucumber Yogurt Sauce  *Chickpeas need 10-24 hours of soaking time. Makes 10 Falafels (I highly recommend making a double batch of the falafels!) 

Authentic Falafel Recipe with Tahini Sauce and Homemade Pita Bread

dry chickpeas

Cilantro (stems ok)

garlic cloves

jalapeno, seeds ok

tablespoon Coriander

Cumin

tsp kosher salt (add more to taste)

oil oil

turnips,

½ thinly sliced onion

C red wine vinegar

tsp sugar

coriander dill

Cup plain Greek yogurt

Cup tahini paste

tsp kosher salt

cracked pepper

Soak 3/4 cup dry chickpeas in a bowl of cold water on the counter for 10- 12 hours or up to 24 hours hours. They will swell into 2 cups. Place in a strainer, letting them drain WELL, and pat dry with a towel for extra dryness. (Wet chickpeas will be more difficult to fry.)

Measure 2 cups of the soaked, uncooked chickpeas and place in a food processor and pulse repeatedly along with the onion, garlic, cilantro, chili, salt spices, baking soda, and olive oil, scraping down sides, until it is well blended but still coarse like sand. Don&#8217;t overwork it- this should not be smooth, but rather quite coarse and granular.

Using damp hands, form round, slightly smaller than golf ball sized balls in your hands. If it feels very wet, feel free to lightly dredge in flour if you like. (I usually don&#8217;t, even when wet!). Refrigerate 20 minutes. 

In a non-stick pan or cast iron skillet, heat a ¼ inch of &#8220;high-heat&#8221; oil on med-high heat until it sizzles when a pea-sized portion of falafel is dropped in.

Turn heat to medium.  Place them carefully in the hot oil, do not move or mess with them until a deeply golden crust forms (this crust will ensure they naturally releases from the pan). Using a thin metal spatula, carefully turn over. Lower heat if necessary. Sear the other side. Each side will take about 3-4 minutes. Cook in batches, not crowding. Place falafels in the oven while you cook the remaining falafels to cook them through.  Keep them in a warm oven until ready to serve.

Bring all ingredients to a boil in a medium-sized pot, remove from heat, and refrigerate until ready to eat.

Middle Eastern Pickled Turnips 

Blend all in the food processor, until smooth. This may seem slightly salty, but trust me it works in the big picture when all the components are combined.

Creamy Tahini Sauce: 

I could not fry them without them falling apart.

We made the tahini sauce and it was amazing. We will be trying the falafels next week but buying the bread from our local shop.

Flavor great.... I tried to use canned garbanzos...let them dry but the falafels just fell apart in the pan no matter how long they cooked...very sad.

Authentic Falafel Recipe 

Homemade falafel are delicious, golden brown and crispy on the outside,  fluffy tender and soft inside. Plus, they're vegan, loaded with plant-based protein. 

Falafel

onion,

fresh parsley, chopped

fresh cilantro, chopped

fresh dill, chopped

cardamom (or Italian seasoning)

all-purpose flour (optional)

baking soda

vegetable oil (for frying)

tahini sauce (for serving)

Fill a large mixing bowl with water and add the dried chickpeas. Soak them overnight (8-10 hours or longer). Make sure all the chickpeas are completely submerged in water the whole time.

Drain the chickpeas in a colander and transfer into a food processor.

Add onions, garlic, parsley, cilantro, dill, cumin, cardamom, salt, and pepper. Pulse on an off for about 1 minute until a fine consistency is achieved.

Transfer the falafel mixture into a large mixing bowl and stir in flour (optional) and baking soda until evenly combined. If the mixture is too wet, then adding flour will help keep the falafel from falling apart when being fried.

Cover the bowl with plastic cling wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps the mixture soak in all the flavor.

Apply some water to your hands to prevent sticking and use your hands to shape the falafel into 1-inch balls (like meatballs). Alternatively, you can use an ice cream scoop to form into even rounds.

Add oil into a cooking pot at least 2-inches deep. Heat over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes until the oil is sizzling hot and shimmering. 

Deep fry the falafel in batches (about 4-5 pieces each time) until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Turn the falafel occasionally to get an even golden crust on all sizes.

Transfer the falafel to a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil and let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with tahini sauce and a sprinkle of chopped parsley on top.

Harissa-Honey (1 Tbsp. harissa mixed with 1 Tbsp. honey)

Prepare Falafel:To the bowl of a food processor, add chickpeas, parsley, red onion, garlic, tahini, spices, salt and pepper. Pulse to combine, scraping down sides as needed, until thoroughly combined. You’re looking for a crumbly dough, not a paste (as shown in photo).Add flour 1 Tbsp. at a time and pulse/mix to combine until no longer wet and you can mold the dough into a ball without it sticking to your hands. (I use 3 Tbsp total.)Transfer to a mixing bowl and chill for 1 hour.
