Lohikeitto, the absolutely delicious salmon soup that is popular Nordic countries. It's dilly, creamy, buttery and has huge chunks of salmon and hearty vegetables. Not only does it taste amazing but it comes together in just 30 minutes.

You'll fall in love with this amazing Finnish Salmon Soup. Flaky, tender bites of salmon are poached gently in a creamy, wine-infused broth.

Finnish Salmon Soup

olive oil (15 ml)

butter (15 grams

leek (washed and sliced)

carrots

garlic (minced)

white wine (optional) (60 ml)

potatoes (cubed) (250 grams)

salt (to taste)

pepper (to taste)

broth (fish

heavy cream (35% Fat Content)

dill (fresh and finely chopped)

Cut the leek lengthwise in half making sure not to cut all the way through. I like to fan out and open it and wash the inside.

Once washed, cut the leek into slices.

Now, add olive oil and butter to a pot on the stove. Heat it up and add in the leeks and carrots. Sauté for a few minutes until translucent.

When the veggies have completely softened, add in the garlic and cook for about a minute.

Next, add the white wine and let it cook off completely. The veggies should be jammy and flavorful.

When the wine has fully cooked off, add the potatoes and season with salt and pepper. Pour in the broth and bring it up to a boil.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and semi cover it. Cook for 20-25 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.

In the meantime, cut each skinless salmon filet in half, and cube it.

After 25 minutes, add the cubed salmon and heavy cream. Let the fish poach in the soup for 5 minutes. The Salmon will cook quickly and doesn't need a lot of time.

Take the soup off the heat, add in the fresh dill and garnish with lemon slices! Enjoy.

So good, so good, so good! Another winner from the Modern Nonna! We served ours with homemade Irish brown bread!

This was great!!! Easy and just perfectly delicious!!! Had leftovers with a maroulosalata on the side for lunch next day. Salad was divine and easy!!!!

Wow! So delicious.
My whole family loved it!
I made almost double the portion by using 2 containers of veggie stock, 2 leeks, a bunch of carrots, and loads of salmon

Why oh WHY does everyone NEED to have a vegetarian or vegan option? It is NOT Finish Salmon Soup without salmon!

Made this for dinner tonight. Nice soup. The only thing that I can complain about is the amount of time it takes to make. It definitely takes more than 40 minutes lol.

If I could fly ✈️ to Finland for a bowl of this soup, I would! Finnish Salmon Soup also known as “Lohikeitto,” has roots in traditional fishing communities in Finland. It combines salmon, potatoes, onions, carrots, and dill, cooked with heavy cream or milk for the perfect texture. It’s a special dish enjoyed across Finland, symbolizing the country’s reliance on its natural resources and culinary heritage.

Finnish Salmon Soup is a hearty, flavorful soup made with crème fraîche and lots of fresh dill. It's incredibly easy to make -- in fact, it takes just 10 minutes to prep - and can be on the table 30 minutes later. Loaded with carrots, leeks, and potatoes, this easy soup recipe is aromatic, filling, and perfect on a cold day! Gluten-free.

Creamy Finnish Salmon Soup with Crème Fraîche & Dill (Lohikeitto)

unsalted butter

leeks

potatoes

seafood stock

Kosher salt

black pepper

creme fraiche

fresh dill (about 1 cup chopped,

Sauté the veggies. Melt 3 Tbsp butter in a large soup pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the sliced carrots and leeks, then season with ½ tsp Kosher salt and stir. Cook for 8-10 minutes, until softened.

Add the liquid. Add the cubed potatoes and 4 cups seafood stock, then bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium, and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.

Cook the salmon. When the potatoes are fully cooked, add the fresh salmon and ¾ cup creme fraiche. Stir well, cover the soup, then simmer for another 3-5 minutes, or until the salmon is fully cooked. Stir in 1 cup chopped dill, taste and adjust seasoning, then divide between bowls. Serve with additional dill and freshly cracked black pepper.

Fabulous soup perfect for fall and winter days. I added a can of lobster bisque to add another layer of flavour. Absolutely delicious.

This was THE most amazing soup I've ever made. If a restaurant offered this, I'd be there at least weekly. But I don't have to! Made it myself!. That broth is nectar of the gods. Only substitution was using tiny little potatoes (just cut them in half) because that's what I had.

Wonderful recipe and surely worth a try for everybody
i wonder tho how u managed to get that super rich orange color by using just the listed ingredients ?

I had been eyeing several Lohikeitto / Finnish Salmon Soup recipes on Pinterest for months. I’ve never been to Finland (yet) nor had I tried this soup anywhere, but something about it drew me in. I finally decided yesterday that the recipe on this page would be the one. The crème fraîche caught my eye as opposed to regular old fashioned (but delicious nonetheless) heavy cream in other recipes. For such a simple recipe with little ingredients, it packs a flavor punch! This soup was even better than I had dreamed. I’m sure it’s *somehow* even better with homemade seafood stock, but I had success using the Kitchen Basics brand that I found at Publix. Thank you very much for sharing this recipe. My boyfriend “couldn’t even put into words” how amazing it was. I’ll definitely be making this again and again!

Made the Finnish soup recipe last night. Followed the recipe as is. It tasted like the soup we had in the Helsinki Harbour market. Excellent!
