These fried apple pies are a McDonald's copycat recipe that feature a homemade apple pie filling encased in pastry and deep fried to flaky perfection.

Fried Apple Pies

puff pastry sheets (thawed)

Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored and diced)

Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 pieces. Place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.

Place the apples, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg&nbsp; and cloves in a pan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer.

Cook for 6-8 minutes or until apples are tender. Stir in the butter.

Whisk the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and add to the apple mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until apple filling has thickened.

Spoon approximately 2 tablespoons of the apple mixture onto one side of each piece of puff pastry. Brush the edges with water and fold over to make a rectangle.

Crimp the edges of each puff pastry rectangle with a fork.

Chill the pies for 20 minutes in the freezer.

Heat 3 inches of oil to 350 degrees F.

Cook 2-3 pies at a time, for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown and pastry is cooked through.

In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon.

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar all over each pie as it comes out of the oil.

Repeat the frying and cinnamon sugar sprinkling process with all of the remaining pies.

Serve immediately, with caramel sauce if desired.

The Best Fried Apple Pies Recipe (Homemade)

To make these delicious fried apple pies, you&#8217;ll start first by making the homemade apple pie filling. First, peel, core, and dice 2 large apples into small cubes. I used 1 Granny Smith and 1 Red Delicious for the perfect sweet/sour combo.

Next, combine the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until juices start to form for about 3 minutes. Next, combine the apple cider (or apple juice) and cornstarch in a small bowl. Pour into the saucepan and turn the heat up to high and cook for an additional 3 minute, stirring constantly, or until the mixture has thickened up. Remove from heat and set aside.

Next, it&#8217;s time to make the homemade pie dough. Start by sifting the flour in a large mixing bowl. Next, cut the cold butter into cubes and using a pastry cutter begin to work the flour until all the butter is tiny lumps. In a separate bowl, combine the egg yolks and salt together. Microwave the milk at 30 second intervals until steaming hot. A little at a time, begin to pour in the hot milk to the egg mixture and stir constantly.

Lastly, pour the milk and egg mixture into the flour mixture and stir until your dough has formed. Next, place the dough onto parchment paper and knead for about 1 minute or until the dough is smooth-looking.

Next, divide the pie dough into 6 equal sized pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Using a rolling pin or a glass, roll each ball out into circles. (Don&#8217;t worry about your circle not being perfectly round, we will be cutting away the excess once it is folded.)

Fill each circle with 2 tablespoons of apple pie filling and fold the dough in half. Next, pinch the edges together to seal, and if desired cut away the excess with a pastry wheel or pizza cutter. (You can always use your excess to make another pie) Crimp down the edges with a fork to ensure all the filling stays intact when frying.

Next, heat up oil in a deep fryer or a deep sauce pan to 350 degrees. If you don&#8217;t have a thermometer, you can always use the wooden spoon trick by sticking it in the center of the pot. If small bubbles form around the handle, then it&#8217;s ready.

Add your pies into the hot oil one at a time and fry for about 2 minutes per side, or until a light golden brown. Place fried apple pies on a paper towel to dry.

While your pies are frying, make the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until it is smooth. You will want to glaze the pies pretty quickly after they&#8217;ve fried and while they are still warm. I recommend using a pastry brush to create a beautiful glaze on both sides, but you can also drizzle the icing on top or dip it into the glaze in a shallow bowl.

To make the filling, combine everything together in a pot and place on medium-low heat on the stove. I wanted to dice my apples in nice little squares to allow for smaller pies. You also want to use a tart, sturdy apple in this.

Start with a 1/2 cup of water as you may like your apples crisper for the end result, you can always add a little more for simmering later on. You are going to cook this mixture until the apples are the right texture for your personal taste. This took around 20 minutes for mine.

Remove from the heat and cool.

Prepare your dough and roll out to the usual 3 mm thickness.

I used a 4 inch cutter for this and it was just right, a wee bit larger than bite size and not quite dessert size.

Place a decent tablespoon of filling onto your dough circle, you have to leave 3/4 ” to 1 ” of an edge to be able to seal this properly.

Seal the edges by folding the dough over the filling, pinching together, making sure you use a little water on your fingers to wet the seam. To really “seal the deal”, use a fork to press down on the edge, crimping it beautifully and sealing it at the same time. Make sure not to pierce your little pie while doing this!

Let them rest for 5-10 minutes and take this time to heat up your oil.

In a large frying pan, heat about 1 1/5 inches of oil to about 350 degrees.

Once that oil is heated you are going to carefully put 2 of these in and fry the one side until it is beautifully browned. Then you will flip it and brown the other side.

I mixed together sugar and cinnamon to swoosh these through when I removed them from the oil. I set up a line in order to do this with the least mess.

Using a metal slotted spoon, take the browned pie from the oil.

Place on the paper towel briefly to remove oil.

Place into the sugar/coating mix, flipping to coat both sides.

Cool on the baking rack.

Remove puff pastry from freezer, unwrap pastry and place on a floured work surface to thaw.

Meanwhile; in a large saucepan over medium heat combine apples, lemon juice, sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix well. Stir occasionally until mixture begins to bubble.

Meanwhile combine water and flour in a mason jar or container. Shake to combine. Add to pot. Continue boiling, stirring constantly until apples are softened, approximately 5 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in vanilla. Set aside to cool.

In a heavy-bottomed pan with deep sides, heat about 1-2” oil to 350 degrees.

Meanwhile, using a sharp knife cut each pasty sheet into 3 equal long pieces. Lay pasty sheet strips out horizontally on a floured work surface. Place 1/4 cup apple pie filling on the left half of each dough strip. Moisten your clean fingers and wet the edge of the pastry. Gently pick up the right side of the dough and fold the dough on top of the left side, encasing the filling (if any filling seeps out push it back in).

Gently press along the edge with the tines of a fork. Once all pies are assembled fry them 1-2 at a time. Cook for 3-4 minutes total, carefully flipping them over halfway through. Remove pies from oil when they are a nice golden brown. Place pies on a stack of paper towels. Sprinkle them with sugar and cinnamon. Repeat until all pies are cooked.
