Flattened, disc-shaped fried dough with powdered sugar is a classic dessert found in outdoor food stands at country fairs and carnivals. This easy fried dough recipe with no baking powder produces a fluffy, chewy and crip-edged fried bread with a generous dusting of powdered sugar.

Fried Dough

cup(s) all-purpose flour

tbsp brown sugar

instant yeast

tsp salt

cup(s) filtered water, lukewarm

vegetable oil

cup(s) butter, melted

Step 1

Measure and prep all ingredients for the fried dough.

Step 2

Prepare the dough. In the bowl of a standing mixer or a large bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, instant yeast and salt.&amp;nbsp;

Step 3

In a measuring cup, whisk together the filtered water, vegetable oil and egg.

Step 4

Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and stir to combine. Stir until a sticky dough forms.&amp;nbsp;

Step 5

Switch to the dough hook or knead by hand for about 5 minutes.&amp;nbsp;

Step 6

Shape the dough into a smooth round ball. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Place the bowl in a warm room and let the dough rise until nearly doubled in size, about 1-1&amp;frac12; hours.&amp;nbsp;

Step 7

Shape the fried dough. Remove the dough from the bowl and deflate it by gently pushing it down. On a lightly floured surface, divide the risen dough into five pieces.&amp;nbsp;

Step 8

Use a rolling pin to roll out each piece of dough to a &amp;frac12;-inch thick disc. If the dough springs back, wait 5 minutes before attempting to roll out the dough again.&amp;nbsp;

Step 9

Cook the fried dough. Line a sheet pan with a cooling rack. Fill a heavy-bottomed pot or a Dutch oven with about 2-inches of oil. Heat the oil to 350&amp;deg;F. Prepare the melted butter along with a pastry brush. Once the oil is hot, add the dough, one or two at a time, and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-2&amp;frac12; minutes.&amp;nbsp;

Step 10

Remove the fried dough to the prepared wire rack and fry the remaining dough. Brush the fried dough with melted butter.

Step 11

Top the fried dough with a generous dusting of confectioners&amp;rsquo; sugar. Fried dough is best served the day they are made. Enjoy!

Toutons, or fried bread dough, is a traditional Newfoundland recipe that is super simple to prepare, but incredibly delicious. Serve with a generous drizzle of molasses and you&#039;re set for a real treat!

Toutons (Newfoundland Recipe for Fried Dough)

white bread dough

canola oil (approximately)

butter (approximately)

Molasses

Jam or jelly

Butter

Maple syrup

Honey

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (this is to keep your toutons warm while you are preparing your batches and is optional).

Roll dough into balls, about 1.5 ounces each.

Flatten each ball into a disc, about 1/2-inch thick and about 3-inches in diameter.

Place dough balls onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, cover loosely with a clean tea towel and let rise for 5 to 10 minutes (the toutons will further puff up as they cook).

Heat 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a cast-iron skillet (I use a 12-inch skillet) over low heat.Note: It&#039;s best to cook the toutons in batches, with 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of canola oil per batch.

Add toutons to the skillet (I cook 4 at a time). Cook toutons for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until they&#39;re golden brown on the outside and cooked through.Note: Watch carefully because toutons can burn quickly.

Place cooked toutons onto a baking sheet in the preheated oven to keep warm while you are preparing remaining toutons. Add more butter and oil, when necessary, in order to cook remaining toutons.

Serve toutons with a dab of butter, molasses, jam or any of the other optional serving suggestions (if desired). Enjoy!

Great recipe for a regional treat! We were introduced to these by a friend from Newfoundland and it’s a go-to for us with soups and especially baked beans. They go beautifully with Webster’s Baked Beans* - no surprise since they are molasses based!
