Enjoy this old-fashioned ginger water recipe, also known as Switchel or Haymaker&#039;s Punch, as a refreshing drink to help rehydrate you after working in the hot sun all day.

Ginger Water (Switchel or Haymaker's Punch)

apple cider vinegar

brown sugar

molasses (blackstrap)

ginger

water

Dissolve brown sugar and molasses in vinegar, stir well.

Add ginger and stir.

Pour into a quart-sized jar and add enough water to fill to the top.

Store in the fridge, and serve over ice. Makes 4 servings.

I saw this recipe and thought to myself, well, maybe you could stomach this. I made up a batch using different sweeteners because I'm keto. I tasted along the way to get it to where I liked it. At the end of the process, I absolutely fell in love! I couldn't wait for it to cool in the fridge so I poured it over ice. I have been trying to figure out a way for me to get ACV in and couldn't manage it, you provided a delicious way to accomplish the goal. I think this will get me off the sugar-free flavored water as well! Thank you so much for this.

Can this be made ahead and canned in jars?  This way it could be put in the refrigerator the night before so you don't "forget" to make it and then wish you had it.

Ginger Infused Water Recipe

fresh ginger root

water (~ 4.2 cups)

lemon

tsp honey

Clean the ginger root thoroughly. Peel ginger for cleaner taste and safety if non-organic; keep unpeeled for full flavor and nutrients with organic, well-washed ginger roots. Slice it thinly or mince it.

TIP: The thinner the slices or the more crushed the ginger is, the more pungent the flavor of the water will be. Adjust the amount and the way you cut the ginger according to your taste preferences and the intensity you desire.

Boil the water.

Add the water to the ginger. Let it steep for 15 minutes.

Once the water reaches a boil, add the ginger slices and then turn down the heat, letting the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes. This is shorter than prolonged boiling and should be sufficient to extract a good amount of the compounds without excessive heat degradation. This method strikes a balance between extracting a robust flavor and ensuring a good concentration of ginger’s beneficial compounds.
