This was gross. I don’t know who decided this was the worlds best but they must not have eaten many ham Sammie’s in their day.

This is the perfect combination! With the Hawaiian rolls which are sweet, salty ham, cheese and sauteed onions topped with spicy Dijon mustard is like fireworks in your mouth. I'll definitely be trying this with leftover ham from thanksgiving

A variation of the Croque Monsieur, this is a savory ham, turkey, and cheese sandwich prepared like French toast, served with sweet fruit preserves or maple syrup.

Monte Cristo Sandwich

bread

milk

brown sugar

unsalted butter (melted + 1 tablespoon for cooking)

vanilla extract

salt

Virginia ham

turkey breast

Gruyère (or Swiss) cheese (shredded

Powdered sugar (for sprinkling)

Raspberry or blackberry preserves (for serving)

Maple syrup (for serving)

If your bread is not yet dry, put it in the toaster on the lowest setting to dry it out.

Whisk together the milk, egg yolks, brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract and salt in a medium bowl. Pour the custard into a 9x13-inch baking pan.

Assemble the sandwiches by topping 4 slices of bread with an equal amount of ham, turkey, and cheese, and then top with the remaining slices of bread, pressing them together gently.

Set a 12-inch skillet over medium-low heat and melt ½ tablespoon of the butter.

Meanwhile, place the assembled sandwiches in the custard mixture for 20 seconds. Gently flip the sandwiches over and soak on the other side for an additional 20 seconds. Transfer two of the sandwiches to a baking sheet or tray.

Place the other two sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Using a spatula, carefully flip the sandwiches and cook until the second side is golden brown, an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the cooked sandwiches to a cooling rack or serving tray. Wipe out the skillet with a paper towel, melt the remaining ½ tablespoon of butter and repeat with the remaining two sandwiches.

Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup or fruit preserves for dipping.

These copycat sweet-meets-savory Disneyland favorite Blue Bayou Monte Cristo Sandwiches are made with rich challah bread stuffed with ham, turkey and cheese, then fried, dusted in powdered sugar, and dipped in jam!  Perfect for brunch or dinner!

Monte Cristo Sandwiches

all-purpose flour

baking powder

eggs

water

challah bread, (1/2-inch thick)

turkey

Swiss cheese

canola oil, (for frying)

Powdered sugar, (for dusting)

Raspberry or blackberry jam

In an 8x8-inch baking dish, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, water and milk, then add to the flour mixture. Whisk thoroughly until smooth and no lumps of flour remain, then set aside.

On each of 4 slices of bread, arrange one slice of ham, turkey, and swiss. Top with the remaining bread slices, then using a sharp knife, slice each sandwich in half on the diagonal.  You may wish to insert toothpicks to hold everything together until the sandwich is fried.

Heat oil over medium-high heat to between 365-375 degrees.  If the oil starts to smoke, turn the temperature down. Working carefully, dip each sandwich into the prepared batter, then lift out and allow excess batter to drip off. Gently lower the sandwich into the hot oil.  Repeat with the remaining sandwiches. Work in batches and do not crowd the pan.

Cook in the oil for about 3 minutes, then flip and cook the other side of the sandwich for another 3 minutes, until golden brown on both sides.

Gently remove each diagonal sandwich half from the hot oil using tongs and set on a paper-towel lined baking sheet. Place in a warm oven until ready to serve. Repeat the process with the remaining three sandwiches, frying each sandwich one at a time and allowing the oil temperature to come back up between each batch.

When ready to serve, dust each sandwich with powdered sugar and serve with raspberry or blackberry jam on the side.
