Make this easy harissa paste with dried chiles, garlic, and warm North African spices and keep it in the fridge for use on meat, chicken, fish, or even veggies. You can also stir in a bit of harissa in your soups and stews or to add a little kick to your shakshuka or hummus!

Easy Harissa Recipe

New Mexico Chiles or Guajillo Chiles

lemon (2 tbsp fresh lemon juice)

extra virgin olive oil (more for later)

Soak and prepare the dried chiles. Place the dried chiles in a heat-safe bowl and cover with hot water. Set aside for 30 minutes until the chiles are tender and re-hydrated. Drain the chiles and remove the stems and seeds.

Combine chiles with the remaining ingredients. Transfer the chiles to the bowl of a large food processor fitted with a blade. Add the tomato paste, roasted red peppers, garlic, ground caraway seeds, coriander, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne (if using), and a large pinch of kosher salt. Add fresh lemon juice.

Make the harissa paste. Run the food processor, and while it’s running, drizzle the extra virgin olive oil from the top opening. Stop the processor to scrape down the sides and run again until you reach the desired paste-like texture. Taste and adjust seasonings to  your liking (remember that harissa paste will deepen in flavor as it sits in the fridge over the next day or two).

Store. Transfer the harissa paste to a clean mason jar. Cover with a very thin layer of extra virgin olive oil, then cover the jar with its lid tightly and refrigerate.

How to Make Harissa

Harissa sauce is a North African &amp; Middle Eastern spicy red sauce that is made using simple ingredients in under 20 minutes. It is vibrant red in color and adds smokiness and heat to whatever it is added to.

Harissa Sauce Recipe

coriander seeds

Remove the stalk of the Fresno chilies and cut them into half. Remove the seeds and chop them into small pieces.

Add coriander seeds and cumin seeds in a small nonstick pan and dry roast on medium heat until browned and fragrant. Keep stirring continuously and once done, keep aside.

Roast the red peppers over direct flame until charred from all sides. Keep rotating while roasting using a tong. You can also roast them in a broiler or use jarred roasted peppers.

Remove the roasted peppers to a plate and let them cool completely. Once cooled, peel off the charred skin.

Discard the seeds and chop the peppers into small pieces.

Add all the ingredients including the roasted peppers in the jar of a grinder.

Blend to make a smooth paste. Harissa sauce is ready.

Store in a clean jar and use as required.

Smoky, spicy, and oh-so-flavorful. This harissa uses guajillo and arbol chiles to give you the heat, while roasted red peppers and a mix of spices make it stupidly-yummy.

Remove the stems and seeds from the guajillo and arbol chiles. Place them in a heatproof bowl and cover with boiling water. Let soak for 20 minutes, until softened.

Drain the chiles, discarding the water, and set aside.

In a small skillet, toast the cumin seeds, coriander, Kashmiri red chili powder, Aleppo pepper, ground cloves  over low heat for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Remove from heat.

In a blender or food processor, combine the soaked chiles, toasted spices, roasted red peppers, garlic, tomato paste, lemon juice, olive oil, and salt. Blend for 1–2 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed, until smooth and thick. If needed, add 1–2 teaspoons of additional olive oil to achieve a spreadable consistency.

Transfer to a clean jar or container. Store refrigerated and use within 1 week.

Super easy and quick harissa recipe with fresh peppers and lightly seasoned.

Clean the bell peppers,  core and seed then remove the white ribs. Cut in half.

Clean the hot pepper and remove the green part.

Place the peppers and garlic in a microwave safe dish, cover with plastic wrap. Make some holes in the wrap and microwave on high for 6-8 minutes until tender and soft.

Let them stand a minute strain well then dice the peppers into smaller chunks.

In your food processor, place peppers, garlic, and all other ingredients.

Process until you reach the consistency you like.

Pour into clean jars, drizzle thin layer of olive oil on top and seal the jars.

Refrigerate overnight before using.

Wow, I've made a couple of other recipes and never really liked them, something was off and there is always some bitterness to my sauce. I think this was because they have used dried peppers. I had some red bell peppers in the fridge and decided to give this recipe a try. I did not even have any red hot pepper so used some jalapeño from the garden and a couple of minutes later my harissa was ready. So glad I have found this recipe, will never ever try another one.
