My foolproof method for cooking both hard boiled eggs and soft boiled eggs (perfectly) is placing them gently in a pot of boiling water. Watch the video above to see my easy, step-by-step process.

Hard Boiled Eggs Recipe (and Soft Boiled Eggs)

Bring a medium-sized pot of water to a boil. Ensure there's enough water in the pot to cover the eggs by about an inch.

While you're waiting for the water to boil, remove the eggs from the fridge (set them on the counter) and prepare ice water bath in a large bowl.

Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low and use skimmer to gently and slowly add the eggs to the water. Then, turn the heat back up to a boil.

Set a timer and cook the eggs for 6-7 minutes for soft boiled eggs and 12-14 minutes for hard boiled eggs. See the cook time notes above.

Once the eggs have cooked to your preferred time, use the skimmer to remove the eggs and immediately submerge them in the ice water bath to stop them from cooking.

Peel the eggs and enjoy.

How to Boil Eggs

Place eggs in saucepan

Place eggs in the bottom of a saucepan. Be sure not to crowd the eggs in the pan. They should fit comfortably.

Fill with water

Fill the pan with cold water, 1 inch above the eggs.

Bring to boil

Bring the water to a rapid boil on the stovetop over high heat.

Cover and let sit

Once the water comes to a boil, cover the pan with a lid and remove the pan from the heat. Do not lift the lid. Set a timer for the type of boiled egg you want, from 4 minutes to 12 minutes.

Prepare ice bath

Cool eggs

When the eggs reach the desired cooking time, use tongs to remove the eggs from the hot water and immerse gently into the prepared ice water to cool, about 10 minutes.

Cover the eggs in a saucepan with water

Place eggs in a large saucepan. Cover them with cool water by 1 inch.

Boil the eggs

Cover with a lid and bring water to a boil over high heat; when the water has reached a full rolling boil, reduce the heat to medium-high and set the timer for the desired time. Boil for 6 - 7 minutes over medium-high heat for perfect hard-boiled eggs.

Transfer to a bowl with cold water

Using a slotted spoon, transfer them to a large bowl of ice water and let them cool for a few minutes. Or you can place them under cool running water to stop the cooking.

Peel the eggs

Peel and serve the eggs immediately. You can sprinkle some paprika or chives on top.

Hard Boiled Eggs

Gently place eggs in a large pot. Fill pot with cold water until eggs are covered by 1 inch.

Place pot over medium-high heat and bring to a rolling boil.

Switch off heat (if using a stove that doesn&#039;t retain heat well (eg induction), simmer on lowest heat setting for 1 minute before switching off) cover pot with a lid and let eggs sit on switched off burner for 6-16 minutes.6 minutes yield egg with fully cooked white and partly cooked yolk, with runny center.8 minutes yield egg with fully cooked white and yammy yolk center.12 minutes yield egg with fully cooked white, fully set yolk but &quot;fudgy&quot; center.16 minutes yield egg with fully cooked white and fully cooked yolk.

While eggs are sitting, place ice in a large bowl and cover with 4-6 cups cold water.

Once time for eggs is up, remove from hot water and immediately transfer to ice bath. Allow too sit in there for 5-10 minutes before removing to either store in shells, or to peel.

Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs (Boiling Time with Video)

Place 12 eggs in the bottom of a large pot and and cover with water 1 inch above the eggs.

Bring the water to a boil, gently stirring the eggs several times.

As soon as the water boils, remove the pot from the heat, cover, and let the eggs sit for 15 minutes (13 minutes for small eggs or 17 minutes extra large eggs). Prepare a bowl of ice water.

After 15 minutes, place the eggs in the ice water and allow them to cool completely (about 15 minutes). Peel immediately, or store in the fridge for 4 to 5 days.

Storing - Hard boiled eggs can be stored in the fridge for up to 7 days (peeled or unpeeled). Freezing not recommended (whites go weird).
