Cornmeal

Sugar

Baking Powder

Salt

Garlic Powder

Onion Powder

Paprika

Pepper

Egg (Large)

Buttermilk

Butter

Tarter Sauce (for serving)

Preheat 2 inches of oil in a large skillet to 365 degrees.  In a medium sized mixing bowl add the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper.  Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until combined.  Stir in cubed butter.

Drop the batter by rounded teaspoonfuls in the hot oil.  Let cook until they are golden brown 2-3 minutes.  Remove with a metal strainer on a paper toweled lined plate.  Serve with tarter sauce if desired.

white corn meal

all-purpose flour

baking powder

salt

sugar

onion

milk

In a skillet, add frying oil and heat.

In a medium sized bowl, add corn meal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt and granulated sugar and whisk together to combine.

Next add in egg, onion and milk and whisk until batter is thick and well combined.

Over hot heat, drop in tablespoons of batter and fry until golden brown on all sides.

Remove hush puppies once golden brown and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.

Hush Puppies are a Southern classic that you can whip up at home with a few simple ingredients. Enjoy them at your next fish fry or family barbecue!

Hush Puppies Recipe

yellow cornmeal ((150 grams))

all-purpose flour ((90 grams))

baking soda

black pepper

buttermilk ((180 milliliters))

onion (grated, (60 grams))

Peanut or vegetable oil (for frying)

In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and pepper.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until the egg is well beaten. Add the wet mixture and grated onion to the cornmeal mixture and stir until well combined. Let the batter rest for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat 2 inches of oil in a large cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven until it reaches 350°F on a deep-fry thermometer. Line a large baking sheet with paper towels.

Using 2 spoons, drop tablespoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. (Use the back of one spoon to push the batter off the other spoon, one at a time.) Work in batches to not overcrowd the pan.

Fry until golden brown, turning halfway through, about 3 to 4 minutes total. Remove hush puppies using a slotted spoon or spider strainer and drain on the paper towels. Serve hot.
