Jamaican curry goat is a finger licking, savory, comforting and flavorful curry that will deliver a major punch to your taste buds! It is usually eaten with rice and sometimes with a side of fried plantains and is one of the jamaican food staples you absolutely should not hesitate to try!

Jamaican Curry Goat Recipe

lbs chopped bone in goat meat

13.5 fl. oz coconut milk ((about 1 can))

red onions

potatoes

scotch bonnet peppers

flavorless oil ((I used canola oil))

garlic

tbsp Jamaican style curry powder

tsp sugar

allspice

Chop 1 onion, 1 scotch bonnet pepper, and 1 clove of garlic and set aside.

In a large bowl (preferably one with a lid), marinade the goat meat with the chopped onions, chopped scotch bonnet pepper, chopped garlic, 2 tsps salt, ground allspice, and 2 tbsp curry powder.

Allow the goat meat to sit in the marinade overnight or for at least 3 hours in the refrigerator.&nbsp;

After the goat meat has marinated for at least 3 hours, bring out of the refrigerator, and allow to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.&nbsp;

Slice one onion and one scotch bonnet pepper and set aside.

In a large pot, saute the sliced onion and scotch bonnets pepper in the oil on low-medium heat for 10 minutes.&nbsp;

Add in the marinated goat meat and 1 tbsp curry powder, and saute on high heat for 5 minutes

After the meat has sauteed for 10 minutes, turn the heat down to low, and pour in water to cover the meat about half way.

Cover the pot and allow the meat to simmer for on low heat for 30 minutes.&nbsp;

After 30 minutes, taste the sauce for seasoning. adjust the salt to your taste, and then add in the sugar.&nbsp;

Continue to cook the curry in the pot covered for another 30 minutes, or until the goat meat is tender.&nbsp;

While the curry is cooking, peel and cut the potatoes into 1 inch cubes.

Once the goat meat is tender, add in the potatoes, turn the heat up to medium, and cook for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, add in the coconut milk and simmer again for another 10 minutes. Serve the curry goat with boiled rice or with roti.&nbsp;

Jamaican Curry Goat

2.5 Tablespoon Jamaican curry powder (separated)

ginger powder

all-purpose seasoning

onion

thyme (or 1 tsp dried)

Tablespoon oil

water

scotch bonnet pepper

russet potato (chopped)

Salt and pepper

Rinse goat meat with vinegar and water.

Season goat meat with 1 ½ Tbsp curry powder, all-purpose seasoning, ground ginger, allspice, onion, garlic cloves, and thyme. Marinate for at least 4 hours or up to overnight.

Remove onion and garlic from goat and set aside.

Set an electric pressure cooker, like an Instant Pot, on high sauté and add oil. Add goat meat and brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove goat from insert and add 1 Tbsp oil and remaining curry powder and sauté for about 10 seconds. Then add onions and garlic and sauté until softened. About 4 minutes. If the onions look dry, add a little water and continue to sauté.

Add goat and water to the pressure cooker and cover the pressure cooker. Cook for 40 minutes on high pressure.  Allow to naturally release for 10 minutes, then release the remaining pressure.

Once all the pressure has been released, open the pressure cooker. Place on sauté for 10-15 minutes, add potatoes and a whole scotch bonnet pepper. Cook until potatoes have softened. Remove scotch bonnet pepper.

Making curry goat on the stovetop is similar to making it in the pressure cooker. Follow the above directions except cook the goat in a large covered pot over low heat for 1.5-2 hours, until the goat is tender. Add the chopped potatoes during the last 20 minutes of cooking.

Second time I've made this,  first time stove top and today in the pressure cooker, i won't change a thing, very nice 👍.

When would you add the scotch bonnet if cooking on the stove as opposed to a pressure cooker??

Thank you for raising my curry goat game! I finally have that back of yard flavor. The only think to make it more authentic would be to be 10 years old again, having my grandmother standing over a coal pot and telling me and my cousins to go and set the table for dinner! Thanks again.

Made this yesterday with the Rice and Peas (Sorry can't call it beans...) and it was easy to make and delicious. It's great to have control of the amount of spice in the dish versus being at the mercy of take out.
