SAUCE:

This Malva Pudding recipe is a sweet and moist cake recipe straight from South Africa made with incredible apricot jam and heavy cream.

South African Malva Pudding Recipe

(6floz/180 milliliters) whole milk

(3 ounces 85 grams) dark brown sugar

apricot jam, (strained)

(1 ounces 30 grams) butter, (melted)

apple cider vinegar

(7½oz/213 grams) all-purpose flour

baking powder

baking soda

salt

½ cup (4floz/120 milliliters) heavy cream

(4floz/120 milliliters) whole milk

½ cup (4 ounces 115 grams) butter

½ cup (4 ounces 115 grams) sugar

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and butter an 8-inch (20cm) square baking dish.

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the milk, brown sugar, eggs, apricot jam, melted butter, and vinegar until fully combined.

In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt, and then combine with the wet ingredients until thoroughly combined.

Pour into the prepared baking pan and bake for 30-40 minutes, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Just before the pudding is done, make the sauce: in a saucepan over medium heat combine the cream, milk, butter, sugar, and salt and heat until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved.

Once the pudding is done, poke holes all over the hot pudding with a skewer and then pour the warm sauce over the pudding. Allow resting for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Store leftover pudding in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving, either in a 300°F (150°C) oven or in the microwave.

Thank you so much! Love this recipe, the family normally demolish it in minutes. I’ve decided to make this for Christmas so will be making in advance. It’s so delicious and a family favourite! Thanks again

Do you think it would work with almond flour as a replacement to the flour? This sounds delicious.

Tried this for the first time after hearing, Virat Kohli - Indian cricketer talking about this, and I must say it turned out very well. I can make a bit more of the sauce as it was totally absorbed into the cake. Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe.

South African Malva pudding is rich, syrupy and absolutely delicious served with quick and easy frozen custard. The ultimate dessert.

South African Malva Pudding

butter

sugar

apricot jam/apricot preserves

white vinegar

flour

milk

bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

water

golden syrup

unsalted butter

vanilla extract

To make the pudding, pre-heat the oven to 180°C/350°F and grease a 30cm/11in baking dish.

In a saucepan set over medium-high heat melt together the butter, sugar, apricot jam and vinegar until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes then pour into a large mixing bowl.

Sift the dry ingredients together then add to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, mixing well after each addition.

Stir in the beaten eggs.

Pour the batter into the prepared dish and place in the oven.

Bake for 30 minutes until the pudding is dark brown and baked through (a skewer inserted should come out clean).

While the pudding is baking, prepare the syrup.

Bring all the syrup ingredients to a boil and reduce the heat. Allow to simmer for 5 minutes.

Pour the syrup over the pudding as it comes out of the oven.

Allow to stand for 20 minutes then serve with custard or cream.

This is really the best malva pudding out. Quick easy and very tasty. Receipt was easy to follow and makes you look like you know what you doing.

This Malva pudding recipe handed down to me by my aunt, delivers the most delicious, rich pudding drenched in syrup. This classic from South Africa is the ultimate warm, comforting dessert and is perfect served with custard and cream.

One of my favorite sweet and decadent South African desserts. With a caramelized exterior and spongy interior soaked in tasty warm butter, it's an absolute delight to dive into.

orange zest

(300 grams) sugar

(180 grams) unsalted butter

(120 milliliters) apricot jam

(240 grams) all-purpose flour

(10 grams) baking soda

(7 grams) salt

(5 milliliters) vinegar

(360 milliliters) milk

(240 milliliters) evaporated milk

(100 grams) granulated sugar

½ cup (105 grams) brown sugar

(240 grams) butter

(5 milliliters) almond extract

(15 milliliters) vanilla extract

In a large bowl, beat eggs, orange zest, sugar, butter, and apricot jam until light and fluffy. Then, add the vinegar and milk to the egg mixture.

In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually, fold the flour mixture into the egg mixture. The mixture might be runny, but that's OK.

Pour batter into a greased cake pan. Bake at 350℉ (180℃) until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean, 25–30 minutes.

The Cake

While the cake is baking, heat the evaporated milk, butter, sugar, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Remove from heat

Heat the evaporated milk, butter, sugar, almond and vanilla extract, in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Remove from heat

Using a skewer, poke holes in the cake all the way to the bottom.

Pour the butter sauce on the cake. Serve immediately or set aside in the fridge until ready to enjoy.

The Sauce

Love this recipe, we omit the sauce and make pouring custard instead. Also, the bake time is far longer than 25 min. FYI.

This recipe was absolutely phenomenal! I made it in a 8x11 pan and it was perfect. The butter sauce is just divine and takes the cake to another level. Thank you for this recipe!!
