Indian style red lentil dish prepared with basic spices and seasoning. It can be served with plain rice or any Indian breads like roti, paratha or naan. Instructions for Instant pot, stove top or regular pressure cooker.

Masoor Dal Recipe (Red Lentil Recipe)

moong dal ((optional))

tomatoes (chopped & deseeded)

green chili ((optional))

water ((for 1¾ cups for IP))

ghee (or oil

red chili (broken)

garlic (cloves chopped)

mustard seeds ((optional))

cumin seeds

asafoetida ((hing))

salt

red chili powder

turmeric

garam masala ((or ⅛ tsp) (adjust to taste))

kasuri methi ((dried fenugreek leaves) or 2 tbsp coriander leaves)

lemon juice (for serving)

Masoor dal recipe (Red lentil recipe)

Add masoor dal &amp; moong dal (optional) to a pot or pressure cooker. Wash it a few times until the water runs clear.

Next add chopped tomatoes, water and green chili.

Pressure cook for 1 to 2 whistles on a medium heat. If cooking in a pot, cook on a medium heat until soft adding more water if needed.

Once the pressure releases, open the cooker.

Mash the dal to suit your liking. You can make it smooth or keep it grainy. If needed you can pour 2 to 3 tbsp water to bring it to a consistency.

Stovetop masoor dal

Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a small pan.

Add mustard, cumin, red chilies and garlic.

Saute until the garlic turns slightly golden.

Turn off the heat and add hing, chili powder and turmeric. You can also add in garam masala if using.

Quickly pour this off to the dal. Time to add salt and kasuri methi if using.

Mix and simmer for 2 mins. If using coriander leaves add them now.&nbsp;

Squeeze in some lemon before serving. Masoor dal is ready to serve with roti or rice.

Tempering

Press saute button on the Instant pot and pour oil to the inner pot.

Add mustard, cumin, broken red chilies and garlic.

When they splutter add tomatoes along with salt, chilli powder, hing, garam masala (optional) and turmeric.

Saute for 1 min. Next add dal, green chilli and pour water.

Stir well and deglaze to release any bits of food stuck. Secure the Instant pot with lid. Set the steam release handle to sealing.

Optional :You can cook basmati rice together by placing the rice bowl on a long legged trivet.

Press pressure cook button and set the timer for 7 mins.

Wait for the pressure to release naturally. When the pin drops, open the IP.

Stir well and add more salt &amp; hot water if needed. Cook on saute mode to bring to consistency if needed.

Squeeze lemon juice and serve masoor dal with rice.

Instant pot masoor dal

Plain Mosur Dal

mustard oil

¼ tsp kaalo jeere or nigella seeds

pcs dried red chillies

pcs green chillies (slit)

pc bay leaf

coriander leaves (finely chopped)

Wash the dal thoroughly with plenty of water, making sure to rinse and repeat at least twice.

Place the washed and drained dal in a pressure cooker with 500 g of water. You can also cook the dal over the stove in a lidded pot, but make sure to take 600 g of water instead of 500 g to compensate for evaporation.

Boil till you see the broken grains of dal. If using a pressure cooker, cook on medium-high heat till you hear the first whistle. Turn off the heat and let the pressure release on its own.

Whisk the boiled dal with a beater till you can no longer see the individual grains.

Add mustard oil and allow it to smoke lightly.

Temper the oil with kaalo jeere, dried red chillies, green chillies, and bay leaf, till the spices crackle.

Allow the dal to boil on medium heat for 4–5 minutes.

Garnish with the chopped coriander leaves. Boil for another minute and remove from heat.

Brown lentil curry, also known as sabut masoor ki dal is a very comforting and delicious dal recipe from India. This Indian dal is vegan and gluten-free. You can enjoy it with rice as well as any Indian bread like roti or naan.

Whole masoor dal-Indian style brown lentil

brown lentils (sabut masoor)

red onion (finely chopped)

tomato (finely chopped)

garlic

green chilies

cilantro (roughly chopped)

of ½ a lemon (adjust to taste)

coriander powder

red chili powder (adjust to taste)

turmeric powder

mustard oil/ any cooking oil

Rinse brown lentils. Put in the pressure cooker with water, turmeric powder, and half of the salt you are using in the recipe. Cook on medium flame until 3 whistles.

After 3 whistles, switch off the stove wait for around 5-10 minutes or until the pressure gets released completely.

Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Add garlic and saute until it starts turning brown.

Next, add onion and cook until it also turns golden brown.

Add coriander powder and red chili powder. Saute for around 30 seconds.

Add green chilies, tomatoes, and the remaining salt. Cook until the tomatoes turn mushy.

Finally, add cooked brown lentils and mix everything. Let the dal simmer for 2 minutes and then switch off the stove.

Add lemon juice and coriander leaves. Mix. Serve hot with rice or roti.

An easy and delicious brown lentil soup known as Masoor Dal, made in the Instant Pot but can also be made in any stovetop pressure cooker. This meal is wholesome, healthy, budget friendly!
