Ground Beef ((15%+ fat))

Ground Pork ((15%+ fat))

Milk

Fresh Parsley

small/medium White Onion, (peeled &

Garlic, (peeled & grated/minced)

Worcestershire Sauce

Salt

tsp Dried Oregano

tsp Black Pepper

Oil Spray, (as needed)

Tomato Passata ((pureed/strained tomatoes in US))

White Onion, (finely diced)

Garlic, (finely diced)

tbsp finely diced Fresh Basil

tsp Sugar, (or to taste)

Salt & Black Pepper, (or to taste)

Olive Oil, (as needed)

5x 6" Baguettes/Sub Rolls (sliced vertically down the centre)

Fresh Basil Leaves, (to serve (optional))

In a large mixing bowl combine cubed bread with grated onion/garlic, Worcestershire sauce &amp; milk. Mash with a fork for a couple of minutes until the bread absorbs the moisture. Add in egg, parmesan, parsley, oregano, salt and pepper. Stir/mash again with a fork until evenly combined.

Add in pork and beef and use your hand to combine. Mix until the bread mix has evenly incorporated with the meat. Try not to overwork the meat or the meatballs will come out dry. Use a 1 tbsp measuring spoon to scoop out chunks of meat and spread out on a baking tray. Once you&#039;ve scooped out all the meat, roll each chunks into balls.

Spray with oil then pop under the grill on high heat and broil until browned all over, shaking/turning a couple of times during.

Meanwhile, in a large pan over medium heat add a drizzle of oil along with your diced onion. Fry until the onion starts to turn golden, then add in garlic and fry for 1-2mins longer. Pour in tomato passata then add basil, oregano, chilli flakes, salt, sugar and pepper. Give it a good stir then turn down the heat to a simmer.

Add in the meatballs and some of the char/juices along with them (for extra flavour). Coat the meatballs then gently simmer for around 20mins until the sauce gets nice and thick. This is not only important to reduce the sauce but also to marry the flavours together.

Spread a couple of spoonfuls of the sauce down the centre of your subs, then add in 4 meatballs per sub. Top with mozzarella then sprinkle with parmesan. Pop on a baking tray and grill/broil on medium heat until the cheese goes gooey and golden.

Sprinkle over torn basil or some small basil leaves (optional) then serve up and enjoy!

Tender meatballs simmered in a simple marinara sauce, topped with melted cheese in a buttery toasted sub roll. This meatball marinara sub recipe is satisfying comfort food with options for a homemade or shortcut version. 

Meatball Marinara Sub Recipe

meatballs, Note 1

sub rolls, Note 2

butter oil

cheese cheese

garlic powder, grated Parmesan cheese

olive oil

540 ml canned diced tomatoes (1 can), Note 4 (I use San Marzano tomatoes)

garlic

red pepper flakes ((or more to taste))

salt and black pepper

MAKE MEATBALLS: For store bought meatballs, bake according to package instructions. For your own meatballs, make these old fashioned Italian meatballs. You will need to heat the oven to 500F/260C to bake them. I prefer baking them, but you can also pan fry them in a frying pan over medium-high heat.

MAKE MARINARA SAUCE: For a shortcut, 2 cups/473 ml use a good bottled or canned sauce, Note 4. Otherwise.... In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil on medium heat, add garlic and stir for a minute (make sure it doesn&#39;t burn as it will become bitter). Add the diced tomatoes, red pepper flakes and salt and pepper to taste. Stir. Cook uncovered for about 20 minutes until thickened. Adjust seasonings (and add basil or Italian seasoning if you like).

SIMMER MEATBALLS IN SAUCE: Add meatballs to sauce and cook on medium for 10-20 minutes to allow meatballs to soften and absorb the sauce

ASSEMBLE MEATBALL MARINARA SANDWICH: ° Slice hoagie rolls or sub rolls in half, butter insides or brush with olive oil. Sprinkle lightly with garlic powder if you like. Place on baking sheet. ° Toast rolls in toaster oven or place them butter side up baking tray and broil 2-3 minutes 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) from top of oven (set your oven rack higher). Set aside top half of roll.°  Add 3-4 meatballs with sauce on bottom half of each sub roll. ° Sprinkle on grated cheese on top of the meatballs (about 2 tablespoons per sandwich). Broil for 3 minutes until melted. ° Serve: Spoon on a bit of extra sauce. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese if desired. Place top half of sub roll on cheesy meatballs and serve.
