A comforting, warm, cinnamon quinoa breakfast bowl recipe that’s totally customizable and perfect for meal prep! Simply cook quinoa ahead of time in the microwave or on the stove, then reheat it in the morning and serve with your favorite toppings.

Microwave Quinoa Breakfast Bowl

dry quinoa

water

quinoa

honey

cinnamon

salt

¼ banana (sliced)

strawberries (sliced)

Tbsp slivered almonds

fresh fruit

chopped nuts of choice

yogurt

nut butter

anything else you enjoy!

Option: In a fine mesh strainer, rinse dry quinoa with cold water, if needed. (This step removes bitterness but may or may not be necessary, depending on the brand of quinoa you’re using.)

Place 12 cups dry quinoa (rinsed, if needed) and 4 cups water in a microwave-safe bowl or container.

Cover with a lid or plate and cook 6 minutes. Remove and stir—half of the water should be absorbed.

Return to the microwave for 4 more minutes and then allow to sit covered for 8-10 minutes, until water is absorbed.

Fluff cooked quinoa with a fork, serve, and enjoy! Or, store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Yields ~6 cups cooked quinoa – enough for 6 breakfast bowls.

How to cook quinoa in the microwave (optional):

On prep day, cook quinoa over the stove according to package directions, or in the microwave (see above). Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

At the time of serving, add 1 cup cooked quinoa to a bowl (or saucepan) with a splash of milk,  honey or maple syrup, cinnamon, and salt. Mix to combine.

Top with sliced banana, fresh berries, nuts, or whatever you like!

Yields 1 quinoa breakfast bowl. Repeat each morning as desired.

quinoa* (rinsed under cold water)

Rinse quinoa: Place quinoa in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water.

Place ingredients in a bowl: Place rinsed quinoa and water in a large microwave safe bowl. Add the salt and oil, if using. Stir to make sure that quinoa is fully submerged in water.

Cover it with a plate that is large enough to fully cover the bowl. You can also use a microwave cover.

Cook for 6 minutes on high in your microwave. Carefully remove the plate using a kitchen towel. Give it a stir. Put the plate back on and cook for another 4 minutes on high. When you take it out of the microwave, carefully remove the plate on top and examine the quinoa. If there are still a lot of seeds that are not opened put it back for one more minute.

Remove from the microwave. At this point, you might still have some liquid in the bowl. This is normal.

Let it sit covered on the counter for 5 minutes. As it sits, most of the liquid will be absorbed. In the end, if there is still water in the bowl, remove the plate and wait for a few more minutes.

Fluff it with a fork and serve.

Half a cup of quinoa is perfect for salad add-ins or side dishes. Skip the stove. Cooking quinoa in the microwave is fast, easy, and reliable!

Quinoa in the Microwave: Fast u0026amp; Easy

Rinse quinoa. Add ½ cup quinoa and 1 cup water to large microwave safe bowl (~45 ounces). Cover with microwave safe plate. Microwave for 3 minutes.

Use oven mitts to carefully remove from microwave. Stir. Cover with microwave safe plate. Return to microwave for another 3 minutes.

Let sit for 1-2 minutes. Use oven mitts to remove from microwave. Stir.

If there is water remaining, set aside on the counter while it continues to absorb (~2-4 minutes). Allow to cool, season, and enjoy!
