This homemade naan requires only 7 ingredients and is made without yogurt or dairy. It tastes amazing alongside some curries, stews or plain.

Homemade Naan (no yogurt)

dry yeast

(not hot) water

sugar

+ ⅛ cups white, all purpose flour

salt

almond milk (or other milk of choice) (*soy milk, whole milk...)

olive oil (+more

In a small bowl or glass, mix together water, yeast and sugar with a whisk until fully dissolved. Let sit for about 10 min until yeast starts to foam.

Activating Yeast

In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.

Add activated yeast, milk and olive oil.

Stir with a spatula or whisk and then knead the dough using your hands until the dough comes together.

If you feel that you need more liquid, add 1 more tbsp of almond milk (no more).

Cover the bowl with a lid or kitchen towel and set aside for 30 minutes to 1 hour (room temperature) and let dough rise.

Divide the dough into 6 equally-sized small balls.

Roll out each ball to 1/4-inch thickness on a well-floured surface.

Heat a frying pan or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.

Place the naan in the hot skillet and cook on one side for about 2 minutes until you can see bubbles forming (see step-by-step photos).

Flip and continue to cook on the other side until browned.

Brush on some garlic oil (optional) before serving.

Mince garlic and add it, together with the olive oil and a pinch of salt to a small bowl, Stir until well combined.

This naan with sour cream recipe is a simple and quick flatbread you can make without yogurt. It's light, flavorful, and is perfect for serving up with a quick vegetable curry or dahl.

Sour Cream Naan Bread

yeast (1 yeast packet)

water

all purpose flour

sour cream

In a large bowl, add the instant yeast, sugar, and warm water. Mix with a fork, and allow to sit for 5 to 10 minutes, until the yeast blooms and the mixture appears foamy.

Add the all purpose flour, sour cream, salt, and extra virgin olive oil to the bowl. Mix well to combine. Knead dough for 10 minutes until dough is elastic and stretchy. Cover with a clean tea towel and allow dough to rest in a warm place for 30 minutes.

Divide dough into 8 equal balls. Roll out each ball with a rolling pin until 1/4 inch thick.

Heat a heavy cast iron pan over medium high heat. Allow pan to get hot before putting the naan on. Place 1 naan onto the pan, and cook for 60 seconds until bubbles form. Flip and cook for an additional 45 seconds. The Naan dough should have large dough bubbles on the outside and be cooked through in the center.

Repeat with the remainder of the dough. Top with melted butter and a sprinkle of garlic or garlic salt as garnish. Enjoy!
