How to make a Negroni

Refreshingly bitter and just sweet enough, the Negroni is a classic cocktail that's equal parts gin, vermouth and Campari. Cheers!

Classic Negroni

(2 tablespoons) gin*

(2 tablespoons) sweet or semi-sweet red vermouth

(2 tablespoons) Campari

Ice, ice!)

For the garnish: Orange peel

Combine the gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari in a cocktail mixing glass (or any other type of glass). Fill the mixing glass with 1 handful ice and stir continuously for 30 seconds.

Add ice to a lowball glass, and strain the drink into the glass (or you can use a cocktail glass without ice).

Use a knife to remove a 1&#8243; wide strip of the orange peel. Squeeze the orange peel into the drink to release the oils. Gently run the peel around the edge of the glass, then place it in the glass and serve.

A classic gin cocktail using sweet and dry vermouth

The Perfect Negroni

Combine all the ingredients in a measuring glass or divide the ingredients between two glasses.

Fill two double old-fashioned glasses with ice, preferably one large cube.

Pour  the cocktail over the ice in each glass and garnish with a twist.

Alternately, fill the measuring glass with ice, stir till chilled and pour divide between two coups and garnish with a twist.

Strain into a tumbler and add 1 large ice sphere or some fresh ice, and garnish with an orange slice, using a blood orange when in season.

The Black Negroni is a new take on the classic Negroni. The Combination of Old Tom gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, and some Mr. Black cold brew coffee liquor. Add an orange peel and some Ice and wahoo! You have an incredibly delicious cocktail.

The Black Negroni

oz Spring44 Old Tom Gin

¾ oz Campari (or another bitter aperitif such as Spring44 Fortify)

¾ oz Sweet Vermouth

½ oz Mr. Black coffee liquor

In a lowball glass combine the gin, Campari, the Sweet Vermouth, and Mr. Black. Or you can make this in a pitcher.

Add a couple of Ice cubes or one large ice cube and stir with a spoon spinning the ice cube to stir the cocktail. The idea is to chill the mixture down and to slightly dilute it.

If you mixed this in a pitcher pour into a Low ball glass filled with more ice or one large ice cube.

Twist the orange peel over the cocktail to help release some of the oils and add to the finished cocktail.

This variation on the classic Negroni Sbagliato uses the clear bitter liqueur Bitter Bianco in place of the vermillion Campari.

Fill a tall glass with ice. Add Bitter Bianco, vermouth, citric acid solution, and stir.

Top with prosecco and garnish with an orange slice, red currants, and a yellow spray rose, if desired.

Make an alcohol-free version of the classic negroni cocktail, with grape juice and a syrup made from grapefruit, coriander and cardamon pods

½ grapefruit (approx 125 grams)

Chop the grapefruit into small chunks and put them into a saucepan along with the orange slice, sugar, 125ml water, the cardamom pods and coriander seeds. Heat the mixture until simmering and cook for around 5 mins, crushing the fruit pieces with the back of a wooden spoon as it starts to soften to release the juices. Once the fruit has softened and the white pith has faded, take it off the heat and leave to cool. If you like you can add a splash of red food colouring to the syrup at this point.

Once the syrup mixture has cooled, strain it and discard the spices and fruit pieces. Fill a tumbler with ice and pour in 25ml of the syrup, the grape juice and 25ml cold water. Stir gently until the outside of the tumbler feels cold, then garnish with a slice of orange, if you like.

The Dry Negroni is a simple variation on the original Negroni recipe. Rather than sweet vermouth, this version subs in dry vermouth. The result: a somewhat drier but still very herbal and aromatic cocktail that provides a fun departure from the classic when you want to mix things up.

The classic Negroni is an anytime cocktail. The a bittersweet and herbal Italian aperitivo consists of equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth.

It couldn’t be simpler to mix a classic negroni cocktail—the celebrated Italian aperitivo combines equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. Botanical dry gin and herbal, citrusy Campari give the drink a complex, bitter flavor profile with notes of fruit and spice, while red vermouth (try Punt e Mes, Carpano Antica, or Cocchi Storico) adds some welcome acidity and sweetness. Once stirred, you can serve the drink up in a martini glass or pour it into an ice-filled old-fashioned glass; the choice is yours, but the version on the rocks will become a bit less concentrated and boozy than its strained counterpart. In either format it makes for a bracing and relatively strong drink with a beautiful jewel-tone orange-red hue. If you find the negroni too sweet for you, one option is to actually make it stronger—increasing the gin by ¼ ounce will give you a slightly drier drink—see more notes on variations below the recipe.
Often, a negroni is finished with an orange twist, which adds a spray of aromatic, zesty citrus oil to the glass, but cocktail consultant Eben Freeman, who served this version at the now-closed Tailor restaurant, suggests going the extra mile and making a “flaming orange twist” instead: From a whole orange, cut a piece of zest about the size of a half dollar—cut the peel so there is just skin, no bitter white pith. Light a match, let it burn for two seconds to get rid of excess sulfur, and then hold it three inches over the cocktail and about one inch away from the zest. The darker orange side should face down, over the drink. Squeeze to release the oils into the drink. Then drop in the zest and serve.
