Old-fashioned American goulash is a satisfying, one pan dinner made with ground beef, macaroni, tomatoes, and paprika. It&#39;s economical and easy to make.

American Goulash Recipe

lb. beef

finely diced yellow onion ((1 medium or half of a large onion))

green bell pepper ((about 1 pepper))

salt

black pepper

garlic, finely minced

paprika

(14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained

(15 oz.) tomato sauce ((no salt added))

beef

Worcestershire sauce

Italian seasoning

bay leaf

elbow macaroni ((2 heaping cups))

Optional toppings: shredded cheddar cheese, chopped parsley

Brown

In Dutch oven or large skillet, over medium high heat, brown ground beef, onion, and green pepper, seasoning with salt and pepper. Break ground beef into smaller chunks as it browns. Cook until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are softened, about 10 minutes.

Cook

Add garlic and paprika, cooking and stirring for one minute, or until fragrant.

Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, and bay leaf; stir to combine. Bring to a simmer over medium high heat. Stir in uncooked macaroni.

Simmer

Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 8 to 10 minutes or until pasta is tender, stirring occasionally. Add more broth, as needed.

Let set

Remove from heat, leave covered for 3 minutes. Goulash will thicken as it cools.

Serve

Remove bay leaf. Serve with shredded cheddar cheese and chopped parsley, if desired.

One Pot Goulash

onion

green pepper (chopped)

mushrooms (sliced)

garlic (minced)

water

tomato sauce (29 oz.)

diced tomatoes, undrained (28 oz.)

sugar

red pepper flakes

Salt and pepper (to taste)

elbow macaroni

In a 5 quart pan, cook and crumble beef over medium-high heat until no longer pink.

Add the onion, green pepper, and mushrooms. Cook until tender, about 3-5 minutes. Drain if desired.

Add beef mixture back to the pot and add garlic, water, tomato sauce, tomatoes, Italian seasoning, paprika, sugar, crushed red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes.

Add the elbow macaroni and stir well. Return lid and continue to simmer for 15 minutes or until the noodles are done.

Allow to sit covered for 5-10 minutes and mix well before serving.
