A great cocktail with sour flavors, floral and herbal all mixing together. 

Lumiere

Cynar is a low-proof, bittersweet amaro derived from artichokes, among many other ingredients. Italians typically drink it over ice with a slice of orange. But it has found a home in many cocktails thanks to adventurous American mixologists who not only treat it as a supporting player, but also sometimes as the foundation of a drink. Such is the case with the Bitter Giuseppe, a creation of the Chicago bartender Stephen Cole. The cocktail calls for a full two ounces of Cynar. Though audacious in concept, the drink is easy to understand if you think of it as a Cynar manhattan. The lemon juice, lemon twist and extra bitters do much to lighten up the mixture, which is brighter and more buoyant than you might expect. A great aperitivo cocktail.

Combine liquid ingredients in a mixing glass three-quarters filled with ice. Stir until chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain into an old-fashioned glass over large ice cube. Garnish with twist.

A delicious fall cocktail similar to an Old Fashioned made with bourbon, persimmon simple syrup, and orange bitters.

Add all of the ingredients to a mixing glass with fresh ice. Stir until nice and cold.

Strain into a cocktail glass with a large ice cube. Garnish with a persimmon wheel or orange peel. Cheers!

A 19th-century classic, the stirred, vermouth-forward Adonis was invented at the Waldorf Astoria’s bar in New York and named after a Broadway musical. A classic Adonis is often made with a lighter fino or manzanilla sherry. Swapping in oloroso here further deepens the drink’s rich flavor and silky texture, making it an ideal, low-A.B.V. cold weather apéritif. If you prefer to use a lighter sherry, shift the proportions to 1 1/2 ounces sweet vermouth and 1 1/2 ounces fino or manzanilla sherry.

Place a coupe or Nick and Nora glass in the freezer to chill for at least 15 minutes and up to an hour. (Alternatively, fill the coupe with ice and water, stir for 30 seconds, pour out the ice and water, and pour in the drink into the now-chilled glass.)

In a cocktail shaker or mixing glass filled with ice, combine the vermouth, sherry and orange bitters. Stir until very cold, then strain into the chilled cocktail glass. Hold the orange peel by its long edges, skin facing down into the glass. Pinch the peel to express the citrus oils in and garnish with the orange peel.

Try using rum in place of whisky in an old-fashioned for a twist on the traditional cocktail. Finish with ice and a strip of orange peel

Put half the rum, the sugar syrup and bitters in a mixing glass or jug. Add three ice cubes and stir slowly with a mixing spoon until the outside of the glass feels cold. Add the rest of the rum and a few more ice cubes, then stir to just combine.

Strain the drink into an ice-filled rocks glass or tumbler and garnish with the strip of orange peel.

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir until well chilled.

Strain into an old fashioned glass with one big ice cube.

Garnish with an orange peel, expressing the oils over the drink.

Old Fashioned &amp; Top Drinks with Bitters

sugar cube (1 teaspoon sugar)

Angostura bitters

water

(4 tablespoons) bourbon whiskey

Orange peel

Cocktail cherry for garnish (optional)

Place the sugar cube in a lowball glass and add the bitters. Add the water and mash and swirl it with a muddler or wooden spoon until the sugar is mostly dissolved.

Add the bourbon whiskey and swirl to combine. Add a large ice cube.

Use a knife to remove a 1&#8243; wide strip of the orange peel. Squeeze the orange peel into the drink to release the oils. Gently run the peel around the edge of the glass, then place it in the glass. If desired, garnish with a cocktail cherry for additional sweetness.
