Classic Patty Melt Recipe

Provolone cheese

Thoroughly butter one side of each slice of bread. Set aside.

Combine the ground beef, pepper, salt, and onion powder in a bowl and mix until the spices are evenly distributed.

Shape the mixture into three separate patties to match the shape of the bread.

Preheat a nonstick skillet on the stove over medium-high heat.

Place the patties in the skillet and cook for approximately 2-3 minutes. Then, flip them carefully to avoid breaking, and cook them for another 2-3 minutes on the other side.

Reduce to low heat and cook for approximately 5 more minutes. The centers should be uniformly brown with no pink remaining.

Use a digital thermometer to check the internal temperature of each patty. Each one should be 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71°C).

While the patties cook, mix the mayo, ketchup, bacon bits, relish, and sugar in a small bowl. Stir until well-blended, and set aside.

When the patties are ready, heat a second skillet on medium-low heat, and add one slice of bread (butter-side down) - or as many will fit.

Top the bread with two slices of cheddar cheese, followed by a patty and two slices of Provolone.

Spread the sauce over the unbuttered side of the second bread slice. Then, place that piece of bread (sauce-side down) on top of the last slice of cheese.

Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until the bread is lightly toasted.

Repeat steps 6, 7, and 8 until all three patty melts are ready.

Then, remove from heat, serve, and enjoy.

Melt butter in a heavy bottomed saucepan. Add sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Heat over medium-low, stirring occasionally, for 30-45 minutes, or until onions are caramelized and golden brown.

Meanwhile, cook beef patties in a skillet over medium high heat - cooking for 2-3 minutes on each side (or to desired doneness). When you flip the patty, add slices of cheese to cover the top of the patty - they will melt while the other side is cooking.

In a small bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients for the creamy pepper sauce. Set aside

Spread both sides of the texas toast liberally with butter.

For each patty melt - add texas toast to the pan to toast one side. Flip the toast over and while the other side is browning, add two beef patties (each topped with melted cheese). Mound the top patty with caramelized onions.

Toast the second piece of bread on both sides. Liberally spread creamy pepper sauce on one side of the toasted bread and place it, sauce side down, on the patty melt.

Place bun top onto patties and serve.

Secret Sauce

In a bowl, add ground beef, salt, pepper, and worcestershire sauce. Mix to combine and form into four thin, oblong patties (shape patties to match the shape of your bread). In a skillet over medium heat, add patties and cook until browned on both sides. Remove from heat and set aside. Wipe excess grease from the pan.

Butter one side of each piece of bread. In a skillet over medium heat, layer your sandwiches as so: one slice of bread (buttered side down), one slice of swiss cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, secret sauce, slice of cheddar cheese, and one slice of bread (buttered side up). Cook until golden brown on the bottom, flip, and cook until golden brown on the opposite side (this should take 1-2 minutes per side).

This is a very good recipe. My only issue is my rye bread stuck to the pan despite being buttered. But I put the last couple on panini maker and were perfect!! Thanks to the person who suggested that.
