A delicious Chinese-American recipe that utilizes pork, beef or chicken along with bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, onions, and celery. This is better than take out. Be creative and add more vegetables if you wish.

Chop Suey | Traditional Chinese-American Recipe Like Mom Made

celery (sliced in 1/4-inch diagonal)

(16 oz. bean sprouts, drained)

(8 oz. sliced water chestnuts, drained)

(8 oz. bamboo shoots, drained)

fresh baby Bella mushrooms (sliced)

red pepper flakes

chicken broth

soy sauce

cornstarch

water

Canton noodles

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in large skillet over medium heat and add the pork cubes. Cook, stirring, until the pork begins to brown, 10 minutes. Remove the meat from the skillet and set aside.

Heat the remaining oil in the skillet or large wok and add the onion, celery, and red pepper flakes. Sauté for about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms and continue to sauté until the mushrooms release some of their liquid about another 3 minutes.

Stir in the bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and chicken broth.  Let it come to a simmer. Add the meat back in with the soy sauce and cover the skillet. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

In a small bowl or measuring cup combine the cold water with the cornstarch. Stir the slurry into the skillet to thicken the flavorful sauce. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the sauce ingredients thicken.

Add the canton noodles to the shop suey and stir until thoroughly combined.

Serve the chop suey with chopped cilantro, green onions, or sesame seed

Pork with Sauerkraut and Rice - I`ll never get tired of eating it.

Pork Dish with Sauerkraut and Rice

sauerkraut - 1 medium head

pork - 31.5 oz (900 g)

oil - 3 1/3 tbsp (50 ml) + some for frying

paprika - 1 tsp, slightly spicy

black pepper - 1/2 tsp

bay leaf - 1

Chop the sauerkraut finely, as you would cabbage for other dishes. The sauerkraut I used I made myself, so the acidity and salt are just the way I want them. If yours is too salty, you can wash it and drain it. 

Wash the pork and cut it into small pieces. Put a little oil in a pot and fry the meat on all sides but not too much, it needs to remain juicy. Just crisp it. Add the chopped sauerkraut and season with  black pepper  and paprika. Stir. Pour in hot water to cover the sauerkraut. 

Boil on moderate heat until the sauerkraut softens. If needed, pour in a little water and stir again. Once the meat and sauerkraut are ready, pour them into a tray, add the  rice . Add the oil and 1  bay leaf . Stir, there needs to be rice and meat everywhere. Pour in 1 cup water or a bit more. 

Bake the pork with sauerkraut in a preheated 410°F (210 °C) oven until the rice is boiled and the dish is left to cook in just oil. Enjoy Serve with a glass of red  wine  and warm  bread .
