These creamy, garlicky dauphinoise potatoes recipe will make a fabulous side dish for any Sunday roast. There isn't an easier side dish in the world!

Each serving provides 561 kcal, 5g protein, 33g carbohydrates (of which 3g sugars), 45g fat (of which 28g saturates), 3.5g fibre and 0.1g salt.

500 milliliters/17½fl oz double cream (you may need a bit extra)

Fondant potatoes sound awfully posh, don't they? But this fondant potato recipe from the Hairy Bikers makes a really easy, luxurious side dish.

This is a lovely side dish for a roast or a casserole that's really easy but utterly moreish. Add a few dried herbs to the potato croquettes if you wish.

I’m not, as a rule, one for flavouring mashed potatoes, but this version is a worthy exception. Because the garlic cloves are boiled with the potatoes, they make their presence felt sweetly rather than shoutily, and the Parmesan provides a gentle tang.

Jansson’s temptation is very much the taste of Christmas for Swedes, and I have enthusiastically incorporated it into my own festive eating schedule. And while I do, indeed, serve it with the Norwegian pork ribs, it is so addictively good that I am happy to make a main meal out of it, with a salad or two on the side.

Who can resist a plate of golden, crisp, freshly cooked chips? Cooking them three times at different temperatures is the way to perfection: it’s not difficult and is totally worth it!

You will need: a deep-fat fryer or a deep saucepan and a thermometer.

Cesare Casella, a chef from Lucca, whose family used to run the fabulous Vipore restaurant and who is now cooking in New York, is the man who invented Tuscan fries. Think French fries, but with garlic cloves and fresh herbs thrown into the hot oil towards the end of the cooking time.

You can’t go to Florence without encountering Florentine steak – it’s a famous huge T bone cooked over a grill.  At home, I’ve got my own version of another Italian classic - a tagliata – which is a steak that you cook and then slice on the diagonal, so you can feed 2 people out of one steak.
