This flaky Lemon Cream Cheese Danish is an easy breakfast or brunch recipe made with puff pastry and filled with a creamy, sweet and tart filling.

Lemon Cream Cheese Danish

Frozen puff pastry (, thawed)

oz Cream cheese (, softened)

¼ c Confectioner’s sugar

tsp Vanilla extract

Lemon zest ((whole lemon))

Lemon

Water

½ c Confectioner’s sugar

Milk

Vanilla

Preheat oven to 400F.

Mix cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest together until thoroughly combined.

Unfold thawed puff pastry sheet and roll it out into a rectangle that is ¼ inch thick.

Cut 1 inch strips down the left and right thirds of the puff pastry, leaving the middle section untouched.

Add cream cheese mixture to the middle of the puff pastry and then spread the lemon curd over it. Fold the end of the puff pastry up and over, then fold the top strip from the left in towards the middle. Fold a strip from the right inwards to overlap the left strip. Continue alternating left and right down the length of the puff pastry.

Make a simple egg wash by mixing the egg and water and brush the egg wash over the puff pastry.

Place in a 400 F oven to bake for for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

While the pastry bakes make the glaze by mixing the confectioner’s sugar, milk, vanilla, and lemon zest together in a bowl.

Once the pastry is cooked and has cooled to room temperature drizzle the glaze over and enjoy!

Fresh Strawberry and Cream Cheese Danish

Puff Pastry dough, thawed

Cream Cheese, softened

tsp Vanilla Extract

tsp Almond Extract

Tbsp Sugar

Fresh Strawberries, sliced

Tbsp Cornstarch

Egg + 2 Tablespoons water, whisked for egg wash

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.

In a small bowl, mix together the strawberries and corn starch. Set aside.

On a lightly floured surface roll out thawed puff pastry into a 12×9″ rectangle. Cut in half lengthwise, yielding 2 4-½” strips. Cut those two strips crosswise into thirds, to yield six 4×4 ½” pieces.With a knife, score ½” border around the edge of each piece of puff pastry. Use a fork to make five or six pricks into the dough within the border of each piece. This will help keep the middle of each piece from rising.

In a bowl, stir together softened cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla and almond. Spoon about 2-3 tablespoons of mixture into the middle of each piece of dough and spread around evenly, ensuring the mix stays within the borders.

In the middle of the cream cheese, add a couple of spoonfuls of strawberries into the middle.

Using the egg wash mixture, brush it on the edges of each pastry. 

Bake for 18-20 minutes, on the middle rack and rotate the baking sheet half way through baking. Remove from baking sheet and cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or room temperature. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving. Shave chocolate over the top as well, if desired.

My mother has a strawberry patch in her backyard and I make these every Summer with those tiny sweet little strawberries. It’s absolutely delicious and so easy! My picky brother LOVES them!  

This recipe for a Homemade Cream Cheese Danish could not be easier to make thanks to taking a shortcut and using store-bought puff pastry.

Easy Cheese Danish with Puff Pastry

package) puff pastry (thawed if frozen)

cream cheese (softened)

egg yolk (for filling)

vanilla extract

lemon juice

lemon zest

sugar

egg egg wash)

Preheat Oven

Prepare

In a large mixing bowl, mix together 8 ounces cream cheese, 1 egg yolk, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon lemon zest, ½ teaspoon lemon zest, and ¼ cup powdered sugar with a handheld mixer on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Roll

Unroll the puff pastry and place it onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Lightly roll out the puff pastry just to remove lines from the packaging. Spread cream cheese filling down the center of the puff pastry, in about a 2 to 3-inch wide section. If you are adding any toppings to the cheese danish, add to the top of the cream cheese mixture at this time.

Braid

Cut ½-inch diagonal strips up each side of the dough and then fold those pieces over the filling, alternating sides to resemble a braided pattern. Tuck any excess dough under the ends to seal the danish.

Make Egg Wash

In a small bowl, mix together 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the exposed puff pastry with the egg wash.

Bake

Bake for 22-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool for at least 10 minutes before glazing.

Prepare Glaze

For the glaze, whisk 1 cup of  powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons lemon juice until smooth. You want the mixture to drizzle slowly off a fork. Add 1 tablespoon more powdered sugar at a time to thicken or 1/2 teaspoon more lemon juice to thin.

Glaze

Drizzle the lemon glaze over the cooled Cheese Danish. Let the glaze harden for 5-10 minutes and then slice and serve.

I wish I would have read things a little more carefully. I used the Pepperidge Farm puff pastry and didn't realize I was supposed to use both sheets. I only used one and it has the biggest cream cheese filling mound in it that I've ever seen lol. I'm going to make this again using 2 because this recipe is really good.

The recipe is based just on just a cream cheese filling.   Can reduce cream cheese amount by half  if adding lemon curd on top of cream cheese filling.   Actually recommend a 50/50 mix of cream cheese &amp; fruit.

Never left a review before but wanted to share that 8oz of cream cheese is too much. I’d use 2/3 of that amount. Same amount of conf sugar

I wasn't a fan of the lemon in the cream cheese, but that's a personal preference.  Made this for Easter breakfast at church and it was a hit!.  I did one with fresh blueberries and one with raspberry preserves.  If I make it again, I don't think I'd use quite as much cream cheese in the middle.

This was very good and pretty easy to make. I added cherry pie filling on top, next time I will try chocolate chips.  Thanks for sharing!

Well not as pretty as yours the flavor superb. This was my first time using puff pastry and trying a fancy braid covering. Next time hopefully I’ll be able to get it like the picture.

Excited to try this and have done a similar danish recipe from another website. My question is, if I buy the frozen puff pastry that comes with 2 sheets, is your recipe as it is listed (8 servings) enough filling for BOTH sheets, or just one of those sheets? Just wondering if I need to double the filling ingredients and glaze for using 2 pastry sheets. Thanks for clarifying!

Puff Pastry Cheese Danish

Flaky Blueberry and Cheese Puff Pastry Danish are easy to make pastries that are sure to impress. Start with store bought frozen puff pastry. Fill with sweetened cream cheese and fresh blueberries. Finish with a sprinkle of coarse sugar and bake until light and crispy. It's better than any bakery sweet treat. Enjoy a danish for breakfast, brunch, an afternoon pick me up, or a late night snack.

Flaky Blueberry and Cheese Puff Pastry Danish

cream cheese, softened

cinnamon

blueberries

blueberry preserves

cornstarch

all purpose flour

puff pastry

Prep the baking sheet: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

Make the cheese filling

In a bowl, add the cream cheese, egg yolk, vanilla extract, powdered sugar, and cinnamon. Beat on medium low speed until creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Set aside.

Make the blueberry filling

In a bowl, add the blueberries, preserves, and cornstarch. Stir to thoroughly combine. Set aside.

Roll and cut the dough

Lightly flour a work surface. Unfold one sheet of puff pastry and place it on the flour. Roll into a 12 inch by 12 inch square. Cut into 4 smaller squares. Place on a baking sheet and top with a sheet of foil. Prepare the second sheet of puff pastry the same way and place them on the same baking sheet. Put baking sheet in the refrigerator.

Make egg wash

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Set aside.

Assemble the danish

Take one puff pastry square out of the refrigerator and place it on a work surface so it has a corner pointing up ~ like a diamond shape (see photo above). Top with about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the cheese filling. Spread the cheese filling in a line from the top corner to the bottom corner. Add a heaping 1/4 cup of the blueberry filling on top of the cheese filling. Brush the outside edge of the pastry with the egg wash. Fold the 2 opposite corners to the center of the danish so they overlap. Brush the top of the danish with more egg wash. Sprinkle with coarse sanding sugar. Place on the lined baking sheet. Continue assembling the remaining danish. There should be 4 danish on each baking sheet.

Bake the danish

Place the baking sheets in the oven. Bake the danish for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Make the icing

While the danish cool, make the icing. In a small bowl, add the powdered sugar and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Stir to combine. Add more lemon juice if needed to make the icing thin enough to drizzle on the danish.

Drizzle the icing

With a spoon, drizzle each danish with the icing.

Serve the danish

The danish are best eaten the day they are made. Store up to 2 days in a covered container or cake stand.
