The classic puppy chow: crunchy Chex cereal covered in chocolate, peanut butter, and sugar. It's the best winter snack food (and perfect for gifting, too)!

Puppy Chow Chex Mix

Chex Cereal ((roughly 1 12 ounces box))

chocolate chips

peanut butter

butter ((1 stick))

tsp vanilla extract

sugar

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add in the chocolate chips and peanut butter, stirring frequently until chips are melted and smooth.

Remove saucepan from heat and stir in vanilla.

Add Chex cereal to a 13 quart mixing bowl. Pour chocolate-peanut butter mixture on top and gently stir with a spatula until all Chex cereal is coated. Set bowl aside.

Set a baking sheet nearby and cover with parchment paper.

Add powdered sugar to a Ziploc bag (gallon sized). Working in batches (about 1-2 cups at a time), add coated Chex cereal to bag with powdered sugar, seal or twist the top of the bag closed, and then shake the bag until the Chex cereal is coated with sugar. Remove finished puppy chow and spread out on prepared baking sheet. Repeat step until all the puppy chow is made. When finished, discard plastic bag and any dry powdered sugar that remains inside.

Let puppy chow cool completely before eating. Once cooled, transfer to a sealed container and store for up to 5 days.

Rice Chex Cereal

In a medium bowl, mix together the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Set aside.

Melt peanut butter and chocolate together.  On the stovetop stir over low heat or a double boiler until mixture is smooth. In the microwave; warm on high for 60 seconds and stir. Then warm for increments of 30 seconds, stirring after each, until mixture is melted and homogenous.

Add 3 cups of cereal to a large bowl. Pour 1 cup of the chocolate/peanut butter mixture over the cereal.

Add 3 more cups of cereal to the bowl and then pour the rest of the chocolate/peanut butter mixture on top.

Stir until the cereal is evenly coated. If there are pools of chocolate/peanut butter at the bottom of your bowl, add more cereal 1/4 cup at a time until all that deliciousness is coating your cereal. Remember we WANT clumps, so do NOT add too much cereal!

Let the mixture cool slightly (Put the bowl in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes or outside on the porch on a cold day). Be sure to check it, as you do not want it to harden completely!

Once your mixture is at or slightly below room temperature, add 1 cup of the powdered sugar/cocoa powder mixture. Mix until combined.

Let cool for about 15 minutes.

Add more powdered sugar/cocoa powder 1/4 cup at a time until your cereal is coated to your satisfaction. Let it sit at room temperature to harden before serving (or toss it in the refrigerator to speed up the process)!

Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Measure cereal and place in a very large mixing bowl. Set aside.

Over medium heat, melt and combine butter, chocolate chips and peanut butter, stirring constantly.

When fully melted, stir in vanilla.

Pour chocolate mixture over Chex cereal in 3 stages, folding as you go.

Toss gently to coat all pieces.

Place powdered sugar and festive sprinkles in a large, airtight plastic bag, shake to combine.

Add Chex cereal in stages, tossing to cover and then removing to a wax paper lined rimmed baking sheet.

Spread in a single layer and chill for an hour to set.

Remove. Keep at room temperture or chilled.

Looking for the perfect bite-sized treat? Whip up a batch of Muddy Buddies. It's Chex cereal coated in chocolate and peanut butter and covered in powdered sugar. What's not to love?

Puppy Chow Recipe (AKA Muddy Buddies)

Place chocolate and peanut butter in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute and stir until melted. If not melted enough, microwave for another minute and stir again. Repeat until completely melted.

Add the cereal and mix until completely coated.

Transfer the puppy chow onto a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper. Spread the pieces in a single layer to avoid them from sticking. Let it sit for several minutes for the chocolate to dry.

Pour powdered sugar into a large ziplock bag. Add the coated cereal, seal, and shake until coated.

Store puppy chow in an airtight container.

Setup a double boiler and add milk chocolate, butter and peanut butter to the mixture. Use a spatula to mix until it's smooth.

In a large mixing bowl, add Chex cereal and broken Butterfingers.

Pour the chocolate peanut butter mixture in chex bowl and gently combine with a wooden spoon.

Add powdered sugar to the Chex and gently toss again until all Chex are coated in sugar.

Seal in an air-tight container or store in a Ziploc bag and enjoy!
