A lovely salad for any occasion, light and refreshing

Serbian Salad

cucumber (sliced)

tomatoes (diced)

bell pepper (sliced)

scallions onions

Tablespoons Serbian white cheese or feta (crumbled)

Chives

For the Dressing:

Tablespoons sunflower oil

white wine vinegar

Salt and Pepper to taste

Combine all the prepared vegetables into a salad bowl

Prepare the dressing by whisking the oil, vinegar salt and pepper together.

Dress the vegetables by tossing lightly with the dressing

Top the salad with the cheese

Garnish with chives

Shopska Salad is a delightful salad that is super fresh and so easy to make with just a few common vegetables, oil and spices, and crumbly cheese!

Shopska Salad

tomatoes (chopped)

cucumber (chopped)

onion

bell pepper (chopped)

Sirene cheese or feta cheese (crumbled or grated)

sunflower oil

salt (to taste)

black pepper (to taste)

Add the chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and onion to a salad bowl.

Drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well to combine.

Sprinkle crumbled or grated Sirene cheese or feta cheese over the salad.

Serve immediately.

Shopska salad is a classic Balkan salad made with cucumbers, tomato, onions, peppers, and grated cheese. Often called the best salad of Europe, think of Shopska as a milder and tastier version of the Greek salad. (Vinaigrette is optional.)

In a medium bowl combine all salad ingredients by layering them on top of each other. (If making a vinaigrette go to step 2. If skipping it,  add salt and pepper to taste and then mix all ingredients. Then go to step 3.)

(Optional) In a small bowl combine all vinaigrette ingredients. Using a whisk or a fork with quick hand movements whisk all ingredients until they integrate. (While you&#39;re whisking try the dressing and adjust seasonings to your liking.) Pour the vinaigrette over the salad. Mix everything thoroughly until vinaigrette is evenly distributed over the salad.

Top with cheese. (You can serve Shopska salad and then top it with cheese or top the salad with cheese in the main salad bowl, and then serve.)

Shopska salad is a salad very similar to the popular Greek salad. Shopska is served throughout Balkans, particularly the ex-Yugoslavian states (Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, etc.).  (Full recipe here: https://tinyurl.com/y4awdm4s)

What makes Shopska salad different is the milder dressing (Shopska salad dressing is usually made with regular oil and lemon juice, although olive oil and vinegar are also used at times), as well as the choice of cheese.

Although a local version of feta, Bosnian cheese called Travnički sir is often used (and sometimes feta as well), you'll most likely encounter Shopska salad topped with loads of goat or young cow cheese. 

The exact time and origin of Shopska salad is not 100% clear, however it is believed it originated mid-20th century in the Shopluk region populated by Bulgarians, Macedonians and Serbians.
