How to make the best Southern Collard Greens! Full of flavorful ingredients and easy to make

Southern Collard Greens

white distilled vinegar

salt

collard greens

extra virgin olive oil

onions

garlic

red pepper flakes

chicken broth ((can replace 1 cup with water if desired))

fully-cooked smoked turkey leg

Applewood smoked salt & black pepper, to season

Prepare the collard greens bath by filling your kitchen sink with cool water and adding vinegar and salt.

Remove the collard greens from the steams by folding them in half lengthwise and pulling the leaf away from the stem. (discard the stem or see note below on how to cook them)

Place the collard greens into the prepared water bath and swish them around several times, scrubbing them to help loosen up any dirt.

Let the collard greens soak for 15-20 minutes, giving them a scrub midway. Drain the water and refill with plain water and allow the greens to soak again if needed. Repeat as many times as needed until the water is free from any dirt or grit. After the final soak, drain the water. Next, rinse and scrub each leaf front and back with cool water to ensure they are squeaky clean.

Tear the greens into bite-sized pieces and set them aside.

Prep The Collard Greens

In a large pot, heat olive oil. Add onions and saute until tender.

Add garlic and red pepper flakes and cook until garlic is fragrant.

Pour in the broth and add the turkey leg. Bring to a boil.

Add collard greens and reduce heat to a simmer.

Cover and cook collard for 1 hour (or longer depending on your desired tenderness), stirring regularly.

Once done,  stir and then taste the broth and the greens. (add a little water if the broth is too bold for your liking)

Stir in vinegar and smoked salt, and black pepper if desired.

Serve collard greens with pieces of the smoked turkey leg and hot sauce if desired.

tbsp minced garlic

Onion diced

chicken bouillon

Black pepper

red wine vinegar

Put first eight ingredients in large pot,  cover with water bring to a boil then summer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  Cut cabbage into wedges, cut wedges,  put in pot and simmer for 20 minutes or until cabbage is tender,  taste broth, adjust seasoning to suit your taste. Enjoy!

How To Cook Soulful Cabbage Recipe

Cut cabbage into quarters and then cut each quarter into strips. Set aside.

In a large pot or deep skillet, melt butter over medium heat.

Add in onions and cook until semi-translucent.

Add in garlic and cook until fragrant.

Slowly pour in chicken broth.

Add in the smoked turkey. (You can add it in whole but I like to chop it up a bit so that all the meat is simmering with the broth)

Bring to a simmer and cover.

Simmer for about 5-10 minutes.

Add cabbage and toss.

Cover and continue simmering (do not boil) until your desired firmness is reached, tossing cabbage mid-way.

When cabbage is done removed the turkey and chop it up into small bits.

Return smoked turkey to pot.

Taste cabbage and season with smoked salt and black pepper.

Serve with a splash of hot sauce if desired.

Love this recipe.  Recently I wanted to make it, but had no cabbage so I used sauerkraut.  Loved it.   And yes, it can be a meal into itself.

I never really thought of cabbage and great meal in the same sentence before but after making this dish for my family at new year's meal along with collard greens and black eyed peas, wow! This is going to be added to my quick go to dish list. You have to make it to believe it. Thanks for the recipe! My family couldn't get enough.
