Jamaican Stew Peas is a delicious and perfect comfort food, that is made with red kidney beans, coconut milk, herbs &amp; spices and spinners.

Jamaican Stew Peas

scallion (green onions), chopped

green bell pepper, chopped

pimento seeds, crushed allspice

water

coconut milk

scotch bonnet pepper

black pepper

In a small bowl, add the flour and...

In a small bowl, add the flour and salt and whisk it. Add the water a little at a time and knead to form a smooth dough. Cover and Set aside for later to add to the Jamaican Stew Peas Recipe.

Rinse the beans with some water and drain....

Rinse the beans with some water and drain. Put the beans in a large pot/skillet with the garlic, pimento berries or allspice, pig's tail and 6 cups of water. Let it cook until both beans and meat are tender, just about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Add the onion, 2 stalks of scallion, thyme,...

Add the onion, 2 stalks of scallion, thyme, bell pepper, 2 cups of water, can of milk and bring it to a boil.

Break apart the dough into small pieces and...

Break apart the dough into small pieces and roll between your palms, to make spinner (dumplings) and add to the pot. Add the scotch bonnet pepper or red pepper flakes and black pepper. Continue to stir the mixture, so the spinners won't stick to the bottom of the pot as it cooks.

Allow to simmer on medium-low for about 40...

Allow to simmer on medium-low for about 40 minutes or until it thickens to your desire. Stir to make sure nothing is sticking at the bottom but be careful not to burst the scotch bonnet pepper.

After about 30 minutes of cooking on medium-low,...

After about 30 minutes of cooking on medium-low, add the remaining 1 stalk of scallion (chopped) and stir. Turn the heat on semi-low.

Taste and see if it's to your desire....

Taste and see if it's to your desire. If it is not to your desire, add some salt. Remove the scotch bonnet pepper and thyme from the pot before serving. Best served with some white rice. Enjoy.

Vegan Jamaican Stew Peas is a popular, tasty and hearty Jamaican stew dish. kidney beans also called red peas in Jamaica cooked with a flavorful coconut, fragrant spices, thyme, onion, garlic, and Scotch bonnet pepper.

flour I used Krusteaz all-purpose flour

Sort and wash beans, and soak them in water (about 3 inches above the beans) overnight or for at least 8 hours.

The following day, discard water and rinse beans, place them in a large saucepan with the 6 cups of water, and bring to a boil, lower heat to simmer until tender for about 1 hour.

Add coconut milk, carrots, onion, garlic, and continue simmering. Add spinners and thyme and other seasonings, simmer for another 30 minutes or until sauce is thick. Discard pepper before serving. Delicious served with brown rice and a salad!

For The Stew Peas

Place flour and salt in a bowl. Add water and mix to make a stiff dough. Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll into the palm of hands to make long thin dumplings. Drop into simmering stew.

I'm making this for dinner tonight, cannot wait to try it. I'm going to half the recipe since it's just me and my husband. Even with that there will probably be leftovers. How do the dumplings hold up in the leftover stew?

We love this recipe. I also add some sweet potatoes ( white ones) or some yellow yam. Delicious.

Thanks for your recipe on the stew peas. I am from old school Jamaica, watching my mother make stew peas from scratch and I must tell you that the water that you soak the peas in overnight is never discarded. Try it this way. And you will find out it is even much better that way.

OMG!! I've been craving stew peas for weeks now and finally used this recipe today.  YUMMY!!!!!! I forgot to put the beans to soak and did not want to wait until tomorrow to make this; so, I used canned kidney beans and 11 ounces of coconut milk (only had the small 5.5 oz cans on hand) and 3/8 cup water to bring it to 14 oz.  Everything else, I used exactly as stated in recipe.  It came out nice and thick just how I like it.   I served it with brown rice and steamed kale.  My 13 year old loved it as much as I did :-).  I will definitely be making this at least once a month.  Thank you Michelle!

P.S. I did add some browning to get that gorgeous stew colour..I added it maybe a little too early but will it develop that brown colour that's in your photo on it's own? I used canned kidney beans so I figured it wouldn't.

Following your recipes all the way from the UK!! Made this tonight - absolutely delicious. I used tin peas instead, so it wasn’t as dark, but it did develop a nice colour. I was worried about it being watery, so I turned the heat up towards the end to thicken it. Can’t wait to try more of your recipes ☺️

Thanks so much for this recipe. It was delicious. The coconut milk flavor was a bit strong but I don’t think I used unsweetened. I will try that next time and I think it will be perfect!!! I am not a good cook but this was very easy to make and I will definitely be making this again.

Thank you Michelle for this wonderful recipe. As a Jamaican who’s is slowly going vegan, I was so relieved to see my favourite dish vegan. To this recipe I added Caribbean 1 sweet potato, 1 cassava, and 2 green banana (all slices thick) to add flavour and help thicken the stew. Finally I used 2 cups of flour and a bit of cornmeal (1/4 cup) to make more spinners. I served this with steamed white rice. It was so delicious both my son and husband had 3 servings. They both agreed it tastes like the authentic Jamaican stew peas with oxtail and did not miss the meat.

I’ve made this several times now and I and my tween daughters love it bc it reminds them of Grandma’s authentic dish but this is faster! We double the spinners recipe too lol THANK YOU!

This was soooo good! My husband is jamaican so I was worried when he tried it but he was pleasantly surprised! 
I made the recipe exactly with the instructions for using canned beans. The only thing is that for next time, I will need more dumplings than this, I only got about 5/6 of them. That wasn't enough for my kids that wanted more dumplings :)

Hi Michelle. I tried this recipe tonight and used canned kidney beans and double ingredients including water but it came out too watery. How can I adjust the water amount when using canned beans? It's sitting now though and the flavors are coming out. Thank you :-)

I made this last week for my family; they loved it! I didn’t make the spinners, as we don’t care for them, but thickened the sauce with flour, towards the end.
