Sushi bake is an easy Asian casserole that is rich and creamy and allows you to enjoy sushi without having to learn how to roll! You can even make it spicy! Made with easily available ingredients that you don&#39;t need to go the Asian grocery stores for, this pantry-ingredient-recipe is the perfect party dish for sharing with friends and family.

Sushi Bake (with Canned Tuna)

Cup uncooked

Cup rice vinegar (Substitute

Tablespoon white sugar

salt

¼-⅓ Cup Furikake seasoning

¾ Cup Mayonnaise

Tablespoons Cream cheese

Cans Tuna

avocado (sliced, cold out of the fridge)

Sesame oil (Drizzle)

Green onions (sliced thin)

Optional, for a crispy rice bottom: coat a thin baking pan with some sesame oil.

Cook short grain rice as you normally do. (Add 1 piece of dried kelp if you have it for more flavor.)

When the rice is cooking, microwave the vinegar, sugar and salt so that the sugar dissolves in the vinegar. Alternatively, you can just use ready-made sushi seasoning.

After that, stir the softened cream cheese, mayo and drained tuna until it is evenly mixed.

Once the rice is cooked, scoop it into a large bowl then use the flat rice scoop (or spatula if you don&#39;t have 1) to mix the sushi seasoning into the rice by cutting and folding the rice. (Not stirring- this makes the rice mushy.) If you want more savory food, add some sesame oil too. (This will make it more like Korean Kimbap than Japanese sushi.)

Spread the rice onto the baking dish then top with 1/2 the furikake, followed by the tuna mix, then the rest of the furikake. (If you want it spicier, you can add some chili flakes now.) Try to get them in even layers.Tip: taste it now- everything is cooked- to see if the flavor is sufficient. If not, add more seasoning!

Bake in a pre-heated oven at 425F/ 218.3C for 12-15 minutes or till the top turns golden brown and bubbly.

Whilst the dish is in the oven, cut the avocado and other garnishes then place on the dish once out of the oven.

Enjoy with seaweed, sliced cucumber and pickled ginger!

This deconstructed California roll sushi bake is savory, creamy and so incredibly addicting. Made with seasoned rice, imitation crab, furikake seasoning and topped with cucumber and avocado, this sushi casserole is so easy to make in under 30 minutes!

lb imitation crab meat

Kewpie mayo

cream cheese

soy sauce

Unagi sauce (optional)

Cucumber (sliced)

Cook the sushi rice. Place the sushi rice in a colander and wash until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to your preference (rice cooker or on the stove).

Sushi rice seasoning. In a separate bowl add the rice vinegar, sugar and salt and mix to combine. Microwave for 15-30 seconds and mix to dissolve the sugar. Pour this mixture over the rice and mix to coat evenly. Set aside.

Make spicy mayo. In a small bowl, add the spicy mayo, sriracha, and lime juice. Mix until creamy and smooth. Set aside.

Make crab filling. In a large mixing bowl, add the kewpie mayo, cream cheese, soy sauce, sesame oil, sriracha, and green onions and mix until combined. Then add the chopped crab and gently fold until the crab is evenly coated. Set aside.

Crab Filling

Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C). Preheat the oven to 425ºF (218°C) and place the oven rack in the middle of the oven. Lightly grease a casserole dish or 9x9&quot; square baking dish.

Add rice and furikake seasoning. Add an even layer of rice to the baking pan. You can add as much rice as you’d like for a desired thickness. Gently pat the rice to compact it together. Sprinkle an even layer of furikake seasoning over the rice.

Add crab mixture. Add an even layer of the crab mixture over the rice and press down firmly.

Bake. Bake at 425ºF for about 10 to 15 minutes until golden on top. For more crispiness and color on top, you can broil it for a few minutes until slightly charred but keep a close eye on it so it doesn’t burn.

Serve. Drizzle with spicy mayo, unagi sauce and top with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve with roasted seaweed snacks, avocado and cucumber slices!

Assemble and Bake.

This Sushi Bake - or Sushi Casserole - is ridiculously easy to make, thrifty, and tastes far better than it has any right to!  SO good!

Easy Sushi Bake [Sushi Casserole]

Uncooked sushi rice

Water

Seasoned rice vinegar

Tbsp Granulated Sugar

Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds

Sesame oil or Pan spray

Furikake

Sriracha (to taste)

Black sesame seeds

Kewpie Mayo

Tbsp Sriracha

Cucumber

Green Onions

Nori sheets

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Rinse rice well. Add rice and water to rice cooker, and set to cook.

In a small sauce pan, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat on low setting until sugar and salt dissolve.

Once rice is cooked, dump the hot rice into a large mixing bowl. Fold the vinegar mixture into the rice carefully, being careful not to mush it.

Add the toasted sesame seeds, gently fold in.

Grease pan with sesame oil or pan spray.  Spread rice mixture in pan, press to flatten a bit.  Sprinkle with a nice layer of furikake, set aside.

Remove packaging from imitation crab, if applicable. Chop up or run through a food processor, like I did.

Add mayo, stir well to combine.  Season with sriracha, to taste.

Crack egg into the bowl, beat to break up, then mix well to fully combine.

Spread crab mixture in pan, top with another thin layer of furikake.  Sprinkle with black sesame seeds.

Crab Layer:

Mix together remaining 1/3 cup of mayo and sriracha.  Drizzle over the sushi casserole - I used a pastry bag, but a spoon works fine.

Bake for 25 minutes.Serve hot, garnished with cucumbers, nori, green onion, and anything else you&#039;d like!

Topping:

I’ve made this dish for m sushi loving family for the past few years and it’s always a favorite! Over time I’ve tweaked the recipe a bit. Added smashed avacado over the rice and sprinkled with shredded carrot the. Adding the fish layer (2 cans of tuna + smoked salmon is our fav. For topping, I’ve added 1 cup of panko + sesame seeds with melted butter before baking so it has a nice crunch. As for cucumber I make a spicy Asian cucumber salad and place right on top of each slice as I serve. Drizzle with the sauce and splash with soy -doesn’t get any better than that!!

I made this as written, and it was a huge hit. We definitely enjoyed it even more cold out of the fridge rather thank freshly baked. It was more like sushi that way and a lot more fresh and appetizing after it cooled. 

We will absolutely be making this again. I’m glad my husband accidentally bought a giant bag of fancy sushi rice lol

I found your recipe one day and have been making it for the past 3 years now and I LOVE IT! Everyone else I have made it for loves it as well! Anytime I have to bring something to a family or friendly gathering they always ask me to make the sushi bake!

Great recipe I added melted cream cheese drizzle on top and used toasted sesame seeds instead of the black ones.

I know this will sound like heresy to you, but I just made this using previously  cooked/chilled brown rice and it was very delicious. I've heard that the nutrition of rice in general is improved if eaten after cooking/chilling/re-heating (you can google for confirmation, but apparently studies show that it lowers the carb count) Brown rice of course does not stick together like your preferred version, but I figure it all breaks up once I start chewing it anyway, so its all good For the sauce, I used mayo mixed with some bottled ponzu which included a little lime and it was terrific.  Many thanks for an excellent recipe - definitely a keeper!
