Blackened Tofu Steaks

extra-firm tofu, (pressed)

soy sauce

olive oil

Worcestershire sauce

maple syrup

garlic, (minced)

tbsp. rosemary, (minced)

tsp. pepper

tsp salt

cayenne

To begin, whisk together the ingredients for the marinade in a shallow baking dish.  Cut the tofu into 3 even slices (about 3/4&quot; thick) and cut each of those slices into half. Add the thickly cut slabs of tofu to the marinade, ensuring the tofu is fully submerged. Marinade the tofu for at least two hours. Reserve the marinade.

Once the tofu has marinated, add it to a preheated grill. You can either use an electric grill or outside grill. Grill the tofu for 6-8 minutes per side, until the tofu is slightly charred and cooked all the way through.

Brush the tofu with extra marinade and serve with steamed vegetables and potatoes.

This "tieban dofu," or griddled tofu steak, using Xinjiang spices like cumin and chili. It's tasty, healthy, and vegan! But the good news with this dish is that it has so much great flavor, you’ll never feel deprived.

Spicy Griddled Tofu “Steaks”

firm tofu

cumin seeds

Sichuan peppercorn powder ((optional))

red chili pepper powder

garlic powder

salt

oil ((plus 1 teaspoon))

hoisin sauce

cilantro ((chopped))

scallion ((chopped))

Open the package of tofu and place on a plate to drain for 10 minutes. Slice it into ¾-inch thick pieces. Use a mortar and pestle to roughly crush the cumin seeds and add the Sichuan peppercorn powder if using, chili powder, garlic powder, and salt. Mix well.

Combine 1 teaspoon oil, hoisin, and soy sauce in small bowl. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a cast iron skillet or nonstick pan over high heat and carefully place the tofu in the pan.

Next, sprinkle about half of the dried spices evenly over the tofu and let cook for 3-5 minutes. When the bottom is golden brown, flip the tofu. Brush the tofu with about half of the sauce and sprinkle over the rest of the spices. Cook for 3 minutes and flip the tofu over again.

Brush the other side with the remaining sauce, sprinkle with scallion and cilantro, and serve.

Sesame Crusted Tofu Steaks with Teriyaki Sauce

salt and pepper

tbsp flour (, plain/all purpose)

egg (, lightly whisked)

tbsp white sesame seeds ((Note 2) (yes, you really need 4 tbsp!))

tbsp black sesame seeds ((Note 2))

tbsp canola/vegetable oil

garlic

green onion (, finely sliced (for garnish))

mirin (, preferably Japanese (Note 5))

tbsp cooking sake (,

Season tofu: Pat tofu dry with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Prepare crust coating: Place flour, egg and sesame in separate bowls (medium shallow bowls or tupperware best).

Sesame crust: Press tofu into flour, shake off excess. Dip in egg, then let excess drip off before coat in sesame seeds, pressing to adhere all over. Repeat with remaining tofu.

Sesame coating:

Crispy garlic: Heat oil in a non stick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until golden and crisp. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Cook tofu: Turn heat up to medium-high. Place tofu in skillet and cook for 1 1/2 minutes until the sesame smells nutty and becomes crisp. Turn carefully and cook the other side for 1 1/2 minutes. Then use tongs to prop the tofu steaks up on its sides to sear the edges until crisp - about 30 seconds each side should do it (see video for my technique).

Drain: Remove tofu to paper towel lined plate.

Teriyaki Sauce: Lower heat to medium then add Teriyaki Sauce ingredients. Simmer for 1 minute until it reduces to a syrupy consistency, then remove skillet from stove.

Serve: Place tofu steak on plate. Spoon over Teriyaki Sauce (it clings to sesame, don&#39;t worry, crust stays crispy). Sprinkle with garlic and green onion. Devour, then declare, &quot;I LOVE TOFU!!&quot;.

Very “meaty” and umami-packed Brown Butter Miso Tofu Steaks perfect enjoyed as a main and paired with your favourite sides.

Brown Butter Miso Tofu Steaks (Vegan)

1.1 lb extra firm tofu

tbsp white miso

garlic (minced)

pepper

butter

1-1.5 tbsp white miso paste ((see notes))

tsp dark soy sauce (optional

Vegetables of choice

Slice your block of tofu into 3/4 to 1-inch (1.9-2.5-cm) thick slabs. I sliced my block into 3-4 slabs.

Place them on a tray or container with a cover then leave the to freeze at least overnight to harden. No need to press the tofu or squeeze out the liquid before freezing (because you’ll want the water inside the tofu to crystallise and create the amazing texture!)

NOTE: Certain brands and suppliers hold up really well and have a meatier texture while some are more on the spongier side. So it’s also a matter of trial and error and finding which tofu works best.

After freezing the tofu, leave it to thaw in room temperature until the ice has melted.

When soft, carefully squeeze out the water from the tofu. I did this by carefully placing a slab of tofu between my palms and flattening it to squeeze out the liquid. The tofu will be very delicate at this point so be careful not to over squeeze it since it can easily break apart. Squeeze out the liquid from the remaining tofu.

Mix together the soy sauce, maple syrup, minced garlic, miso paste, and pepper for the marinade. Rub both sides of each tofu piece. You can leave this to marinate overnight. If not, 1 hour will be good too. Refrigerate your tofu if you’re leaving it to marinate overnight.

Add 2-3 tbsp flour on a plate. Place the slabs of tofu to evenly coat in the flour.

Heat a large non-stick pan or skillet over high heat. Add some oil to the pan. Once hot, place the slabs of tofu.

Leave the tofu to cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the tofu from the pan.

Add in the vegan butter. Over medium low heat, leave the butter to simmer while continuously stirring. Allow the butter to start to sizzle and foam up. It’ll turn golden brown and have a nutty aroma.

Afterwards, lower the heat, add in the minced garlic and cooked until golden brown and aromatic. Add in the while miso paste, maple syrup, and dark soy sauce (if using). Mix well with the butter until well-incorporated. If you want some spice, you can add some hot sauce of choice.

Taste the sauce and feel free to adjust the seasoning to your taste. You can add some soy sauce if needed.

Add back in the slabs of tofu into the pan. Turn up the heat to medium and allow the sauce to glaze the slabs of tofu.

Remove the slabs of tofu. I cooked down a mix of peas, carrots, and corn in the pan with the remaining butter and simply seasoned the vegetable with some salt and pepper, to taste.

Remove the vegetable from the pan. Serve with your tofu. These would also be great with rice, noodles, pasta, in wraps, and more. Enjoy!

The most deliciously meaty tofu steak! Perfectly seared in a grill pan or a BBQ with a rich umami marinade. The easiest vegan steak and the best way to cook tofu!

Tofu Steak

450 g extra firm tofu

stock

brown sugar

tomato puree

garlic (finely minced)

tsp liquid smoke

Worcestershire sauce (I use Henderson’s Relish)

tsp black pepper

tsp fine sea salt

g vegan butter or vegetable oil

Drain and slice the tofu into 4 steak-sized pieces. Place the tofu steaks on a baking tray.

In a small bowl, whisk together the vegan stock cube, boiling water and light brown sugar.

Add the remaining ingredients except for the vegan butter and whisk again.

Pour the marinade over the tofu steaks and use a pastry brush to make sure each steak is coated on all sides.

(Optional) Cover the tofu steaks with a lid and leave to marinate in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

When you’re ready to cook, heat a grill pan or frying pan over medium heat until very hot. Add the vegan butter and swirl around in the pan.

Fry the tofu steaks, two at a time, for around 3-4 minutes on each side, basting with more marinade as needed.

Once nicely browned and glossy on both sides, serve with smashed potatoes and peppercorn sauce.

You made a typo 142mg of sodium should be 1142mg of sodium. Revaluate your nutritional information please.

This is not a healthy dish to say the least. Please update your nutritional chart which is clearly inaccurate. 4 servings at 142mg of sodium per serving bawahaha!! Was this just for the tofu? Come on now half a teaspoon of salt is 1200.mg of sodium coupled with low sodium soy sauce is 2tbs/1180mg which these 2 ingredients alone are 2380mg of sodium divided by 4 is 590mg of sodium. How about the butter and worcestershire sauce and the tofu? How on earth did you even come to the number 142? Very misleading information my blood pressure is rising reading this nonsense 😑
