Healthy turkey sloppy joes with an easy homemade sauce made with ingredients you probably already have in your cupboard. Everyone loves this recipe because it can also be made in the slow cooker!

30 Minute Healthy Turkey Sloppy Joes with Homemade Sauce

olive oil

white onion, diced

red bell pepper, finely diced

garlic,

turkey

Salt and pepper

ketchup (I use Trader Joe’s Organic Ketchup)

Worcestershire sauce

red wine vinegar

yellow mustard

cayenne pepper

For serving:

sprouted/whole grain or gluten free hamburger buns

shredded pepper jack cheese

Add olive oil to a medium skillet and place over medium high heat. Add in the garlic, white onion and bell pepper; saute for 5 minutes or until onion is translucent. Transfer ingredients to a small bowl.

Next add ground turkey to the skillet and season with salt and pepper; break up the meat as it cooks.&nbsp;

Once turkey is cooked, add the onion/bell pepper mixture back in. Then add in ketchup, bbq sauce, worcestershire sauce, vinegar and mustard. If you like a little heat, add in cayenne pepper.&nbsp;

Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes longer. If sauce looks too thick, add in a tablespoon of water.

Next add cheese on top of meat mixture, cover with a lid and let the cheese melt for 2 minutes (or until melted). Transfer meat onto hamburger buns and top with jalapeno slices.

Serve on hamburger buns with pepper jack cheese.

Turkey Sloppy Joes

yellow onion ((1 small onion))

garlic ((2 cloves))

carrot ((1 medium carrot))

red bell pepper ((1 bell pepper))

baby bella mushrooms ((~6 ounces))

ketchup

(8 ounces) tomato sauce

EACH: Worcestershire sauce, red wine vinegar, light brown sugar

beef bouillon powder

bbq sauce

Brioche (or your favorite) hamburger buns,

PREP VEGGIES: Peel an onion and grate it on the large holes of a cheese grater. Mince the garlic, finely chop (or grate on the large holes) a carrot, finely chop the red pepper, and finely chop the mushrooms. ALTERNATIVELY, add a coarsely chopped carrot, coarsely chopped red pepper, and garlic to a food processor and pulse into diced pieces. Add the mushrooms separately and pulse into diced pieces.

COOK VEGGIES: Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to a large cast iron skillet and place over medium high heat. Add in the onion, garlic, carrot, and bell pepper. Sauté for 5-7 minutes or until liquid from the veggies has evaporated. Add in the mushrooms and saute for another 2-3 minutes or until all veggies are mostly tender. Press veggies to the edges of the skillet and add 1 pound ground turkey in the center of the pan. Crumble the meat into small pieces and cook until no longer pink (but not cooked through all the way), about 5-8 minutes. As you crumble the meat, incorporate the veggies into the meat. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

SAUCE: Whisk this sauce separately in a different bowl or just add it right into the skillet. Add the 1/2 cup ketchup, 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon brown sugar (Note 1), 1 teaspoon yellow mustard, 2 teaspoons beef bouillon powder, and 1/4 cup BBQ sauce. Stir well and then simmer the meat until fully cooked through and sauce has thickened, about another 3-5 minutes.

FINISH: Remove the skillet from the heat. If desired, add some freshly grated cheese on top of the meat and let it stand (covered with a lid) for 2-3 minutes or until melted. Spoon the mixture on top of toasted buns (Note 2) and enjoy immediately.

Combine turkey, onion, and garlic in large skillet. Cook over medium heat until no pink remains. Drain if needed.

Add green pepper and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.

Add sauce ingredients, stir, and simmer uncovered until thickened, about 5-6 minutes.

Spoon over hamburger buns and add coleslaw if desired.

We’ve been making this recipe weekly for years. Still a family fave.

Made this last night following the recipe exactly. It was a huge hit with my husband. He even asked for the leftovers at lunchtime today. This one is a keeper.

Loved this, my old recipe called for a cup of ketchup, way too much sugar. This one is healthier with ground turkey. I only subbed celery for pepper, personal taste, and chopped up a jalapeño to give it a kick.
