Combine the water, milk, and salt in a large sauce pot. Bring to a boil.

Step 2

Once the liquid has come to a boil, slowly whisk in the grits or cornmeal.

Step 3

Reduce to a simmer and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, whisking frequently. Make sure to whisk thoroughly and break up any lumps that may form.

Step 4

Once the grits are creamy and cooked, remove from the heat. Add in the butter and pepper and whisk until combined. Serve hot.
