Step 1

Rnd 1: With CA, make a magic ring; ch 1, (hdc, sl st, hdc) into ring; do not pull tight. With CB, (sthdc, sl st) into ring. Pull ring tight. Continue with CB, (hdc, sl st) into next 3 sts. (8 sts made wih CB) Do Not Join.

Step 2

First part of Rnd 1: 3 stitches in CA and 2 in CB.

Step 3

Finish Rnd 1 by crocheting into first 3 stitches made with CA.

Step 4

Rnd 2: With CA, (sl st, hdc) into each st around; (16 sts)

Step 5

Rnd 3: With CB, hdc in next st, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts**, sl st in next st, hdc in next st; rep from * around ending last rep at **; sl st in last st. (24 sts)

Step 6

Rnd 4: With CA, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts, (sl st in next st, hdc in next st) 2 times; rep from * around. (32 sts)

Step 7

Rnd 5: With CB, hdc in next st, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts, (sl st in next st, hdc in next st) 3 times; rep from * around omitting the last hdc; (40 sts)

Step 8

Rnd 6: With CA, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts, (sl st in next st, hdc in next st) 4 times; rep from * around.(48 sts)

Step 9

Rnd 7: With CB, hdc in next st, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts, (sl st in next st, hdc in next st) 5 times; rep from * around omitting the last hdc; (56 sts)

Step 10

Rnd 8: With CA, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts, (sl st in next st, hdc in next st) 6 times; rep from * around.(64 sts)

Step 11

Rnd 9: With CB, hdc in next st, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts, (sl st in next st, hdc in next st) 7 times; rep from * around omitting the last hdc; (72 sts)

Step 12

Rnd 10: With CA, *(sl st, hdc) in next 2 sts, (sl st in next st, hdc in next st) 8 times; rep from * around.(80 sts)

Step 13

Rnd 11: With CB, *hdc in next sl st, sl st in next hdc; rep from * around; (80 sts)

Step 14

Rnd 12: With CA, *sl st in next hdc, hdc in next sl st; rep from * around; (80 sts)

Step 15

Rnds 13-32: Continue with rnds 11 and 12 until you are about 1″ from desired height making sure to end with CA. (For a deeper hat continue with more rounds.) With CB, sl st into next st. FO CB.

Step 16

Note: Depending on how large you need the brim you can continue crocheting with the same hook or switch to a smaller hook. I switched to a G/4.00mm hook, which resulted in a 19″ circumference.

Step 17

Next Rnd: With CA, sl st into next 2 sts (last sl st made acts as a joining sl st and does not count as a st.); Ch 1, working in blo, sc in same st as where last sl st was made, sc in next st and in each st around; join with sl st in first sc. (80 sts)

Step 18

Last 3 Rnds: With CA and working in blo, sc in each st around; join with sl st to first sc. FO.
