Step 1
Cook enough rice to yield 3 cups of cooked rice. 1 cup of dry rice will make between 2-3 cups of cooked rice depending on what kind you use.
Step 2
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add in the pork and turkey and brown. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
Step 3
After the meat has cooked, removed it from the pan and place in a large bowl.
Step 4
Add some olive oil to the pan and add the onion, garlic, carrots, and jalapeño. Cook for 3-5 minutes or until the onion start to develop some color.
Step 5
Add in the coleslaw mix and cook an additional 3-5 minutes or until the cabbage has cooked through. Add to the bowl with the meat.
Step 6
Measure out 3 cups of cooked rice and add to the bowl. Mix everything together and season lightly with salt and pepper. The sawsawan has soy sauce in it so you don't want to over salt the mixture.
Step 7
Wash and dice the cucumber until you have around ¼ cup. Dice the onion as well until you have a similar amount. If you are using a serrano cut it into thin slices.
Step 8
In a bowl, mix together the vinegar, water, soy sauce, and sugar. Mix until the sugar has dissolved. Give it a taste and adjust flavors as needed. If you aren't a big vinegar person, you may want to dilute it with a bit of water. The way it is written in the recipe is how my family has always prepared it.
Step 9
Add in the cucumbers, onion, and serrano. You may have extra after you allocate a bit for each dish. You can keep any extra in your fridge. It is great on rice and any meat!
Step 10
This recipe makes 5 servings. Divide your ingredients evenly 5 ways. Store the sawsawan in a smaller separate container as you don't want to heat this in the microwave. If you have containers with lids that would be preferred as it is a liquid.
Step 11
The sawsawan is meant to either be poured over the meal or have each bite dipped into the sauce.
