Followed the recipe, and I added some oregano and garlic to the sauce and it was amazing. 😍

It did have some trouble with staying in one piece like the end result in the video, but I think it may have been too much moisture in the sauce. Something to work on next time!

Delicious! We resisted returning for thirds!  Made a few substitutions because I didn't have everything on hand (like cottage cheese for ricotta and spinach for parsley). My first time making lasagna with ground turkey, and I wasn't sure we'd like it;  but we loved i!

Oh my gosh! This was hands down the BEST lasagna I have ever made. I added fresh garlic and spinach to the ricotta mixture, and subbed Raos sauce for the canned tomato.

I followed the directions to a tee, but it was a little dry. So, I poured a can of tomato sauce over it and sprinkled a little oregano on top. That did the trick!

Great recipe. I made the meat sauce to my taste adding crushed red bell pepper, garlic salt, oregano, a little hot sauce, an extra small can of tomato sauce, and a few dashes of red wine vinegar. I used oregano in the ricotta and added extra Parmesan. Next time I will slice the mozzarella thinner. Everyone loved it. Will make again!

Tried this for the first time tonight.  As a surprise dinner for Valentines day... Lets just say.. It was a success !!

First lasagna I have ever made and it was beyond fantastic. This makes a lot! I couldn’t use all the noodles. Hubby likes it and he’s usually open to tell me what to change for next time. He said it was amazing, maybe a little less cheese? But for me that’s not goinyg to happen. Making it again as we speak!!!!!

This was so good but instead of 1lb of meat I used 2lbs of meat and I added 2 eggs to my ricotta and added 8oz of shredded mozzarella to the ricotta mix and the remainder 8oz of mozzarella on top of the lasagna

(1 3/4 cups) whole milk Ricotta cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Make the meat sauce.  Add beef and sausage to a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.  Add the onion and garlic.  Cook until meat is browned, about 6-8 minutes.  Drain the fat from the meat.  Return the meat to the skillet.

Add the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, sugar, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon basil, and the black pepper.  Stir until well combined.  Cover and reduce the heat to low.  Simmer the sauce for 30 minutes. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the minced parsley.

As the sauce cooks, make the ricotta mixture.  In a large bowl, add 1 cup mozzarella, the ricotta, 1/4 cup parmesan, 2 tablespoons of the parsley, the egg, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon basil.  Stir until well incorporated.

Cook the pasta al dente, according to it’s package directions.

Assemble the lasagna.  In a 13x9 inch baking dish, add a very thin layer of meat sauce (about 1/4 cup).  Layer 3 lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the ricotta mixture, and 1 1/2 (level) cups of meat sauce.  Repeat the layers twice.

Add a final layer of the remaining noodles, meat sauce, 1 cup mozzarella, and 1/4 cup parmesan.

Cover with foil that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.  Bake for 45 minutes.  Remove the foil.  Bake 15 more minutes.

Let the lasagna cool for 15-20 minutes before cutting.

If you’re looking for a classic lasagna recipe, give this easy homemade lasagna a try. We’ll give you hints and exact ingredients to use for the best lasagna your family has ever had. 

WHAT ARE THE LASAGNA INGREDIENTS?

There are a few key ingredients that I like to use in my lasagna:

Sweet Italian Sausage. Search the stores until you find this exact thing. The “sweet” in the Italian sausage really brings out the flavor in this lasagna. I’ve tried this recipe with traditional Italian sausage and we didn’t like it as much. I find sweet Italian sausage in a local grocery store in the fresh meat case.

Homemade Sauce. I always used to use jarred spaghetti sauce for my lasagna. There’s definitely a place for lazy day lasagna recipes, but when you want something really special, make from-scratch meat sauce. The key to this sauce is to make it a day in advance and allow it to cook together for about an hour and a half, or even allow it to simmer in the slow cooker for 4-6 hours. The fresh herbs, spices and tomatoes blend together beautifully if you just plan ahead and take a little time.

Fresh Basil and Fresh Parsley. I never used to buy fresh herbs, but when you really want to make an impression, grabbing a bunch of green herbs from your produce case is the way to go. Use some kitchen scissors or herb scissors to snip the herbs and enjoy their aroma as you do so.

Whole Milk Ricotta Cheese. I’ll be honest. I’m not crazy about ricotta, but it is a must in traditional lasagna. This recipe calls for just 15 ounces of ricotta which allows for two thin layers which cooks right in with the other cheeses.

Nutmeg. That’s right. This is a hint I got from reviewers on Allrecipes. Don’t skip it!

Whole Milk Mozzarella. Pick up a chunk of whole milk mozzarella and shred it yourself. This will give you the creamiest, cheesiest lasagna around.

Provolone, Romano and Parmesan Cheeses. I personally love the flavors each of these Italian cheeses bring to this lasagna recipe. Using these three cheeses along with the ricotta and mozzarella make this a five cheese lasagna recipe. We’re crazy for cheese!

1 pound sweet Italian sausage
1 pound ground chuck 80/20
½ cup diced onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
28 ounces crushed tomatoes
12 ounces tomato paste
15 ounces tomato sauce
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons white sugar
½ cup freshly chopped basil
½ teaspoon fennel seeds
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

How to Make THE BEST Homemade Lasagna {Recipe}

This easy no boil lasagna recipe uses two meats and three cheeses for amazing flavor. Your favorite jarred spaghetti sauce keeps it simple!

Easy Lasagna Recipe

spaghetti sauce ((your favorite sauce))

ricotta cheese ((or cottage cheese))

mozzarella cheese

eggs

Parmesan cheese

parsley (or 4 tablespoons freshly snipped)

¼ teaspoon ground pepper

water**

In a large skillet over medium heat brown the ground beef and sausage together. Drain off and discard any fat.

Add the minced garlic and spaghetti sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, mix together the ricotta, 2 cups of the mozzarella cheese, eggs, ½ cup of grated Parmesan cheese, dried parsley, salt and ground black pepper. Mix well.

To assemble, spray a 9x13 baking pan with cooking spray.

Spread ¾ cup of sauce on the bottom of the baking pan.

Cover the bottom with 3 uncooked lasagna noodles.

Top with ⅓ of the cheese mixture and ¼ of the sauce.

Repeat layers (noodles, cheese, sauce, noodles, cheese, sauce).

Top with 3 noodles, remaining sauce, remaining 1 cup of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

**If your sauce is a thick, hearty sauce, add ½ cup water to the edges of the pan. If your sauce is runnier like Old World Style Ragu, you won’t need as much water).

Spray a sheet of aluminium foil with cooking spray. Cover with the pan with aluminum foil (sprayed side down). This spray prevents the cheese from sticking.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 50 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 10 minutes.

Let the lasagna stand for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brown sausage and hamburger in a large skillet over medium high heat and drain. Divide into 4 portions and reserve three for another night. Add spaghetti sauce to remaining meat mixture and stir to combine.

In a large bowl, combine the ricotta the salt and pepper and stir to combine.

Coat a 12 cup muffin tin with cooking spray, and arrange a wonton wrapper in each cup. Take half the ricotta mixture and divide it among the 12 cups. Top with half of the meat sauce, and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Place another wonton wrapper over the cheese, and repeat the layers by adding the remaining ricotta cheese, meat sauce, and top with shredded cheese.

Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and the wonton wrappers are golden. Cool in the muffin tin for 5-10 minutes before serving.

This Italian Homemade Lasagna is made with béchamel white sauce (no ricotta) and a flavorful homemade red sauce. It is truly the BEST lasagna and can impress any guest!

Homemade Lasagna

Italian sausage

Tablespoons butter

all-purpose flour

Brown meat: In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and sausage over medium-high heat, breaking the meat apart into pieces with a wooden spoon. When cooked through, remove the grease. 

(Optional) Add meat to a food processor and pulse just 3-4 times until it’s broken up into very small pieces. Remove to a bowl.

Sauté Veggies: In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add olive oil. When oil is hot, add the garlic, stirring constantly for 30 seconds. Add the onion, spinach and bell pepper. Continue cooking on medium-high heat until the vegetables are softened –about 2-3 minutes. 

Remove from heat and transfer them to the same food processor. Pulse several times until they’re nearly pureed. Return mixture to the skillet.

Add Tomato sauce and tomato paste and stir to combine. Add the diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir. Cover and allow the sauce to simmer for about 20-30 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally. Right before using the red sauce in the lasagna, stir in the reserved crumbled ground beef and sausage, and fresh basil. 

Cook Pasta: While the red sauce simmers boil the lasagna noodles for half the time suggested on the box. Drain into a large colander and sprinkle them with a tiny bit of olive oil to keep them from sticking together. (You can skip this step if you are using no-boil noodles).

Make the Red Sauce: (Can be made in advance).

Add the butter to a medium size saucepan or large skillet. Over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour, stirring constantly to combine 2 minutes. Gradually add in the milk, whisking until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. 

Cook over medium heat, whisking often so it doesn’t burn on the bottom, until it thickens-- about 5-7 minutes.

For the White Sauce: (Can be made in advance).

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9X13-inch baking pan with cooking spray. Keep in mind that there will be 3 layers of lasagna, so mentally split the sauces into thirds as you layer them to make sure you have enough at the end.

Layer: Start by layering the bottom of your greased pan with 3 lasagna noodles. Spread the red sauce over the noodles, followed by the white sauce, Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, spreading all to the edges. Top with another layer of noodles, then red sauce, white sauce, parmesan and mozzarella cheeses. 

Repeat: Add the final layer of noodles, then red sauce, white sauce and cheeses.

Bake for 30 minutes. Allow the lasagna to sit for 15-20 minutes before serving.

Serve with garlic bread or homemade breadsticks and a green salad.

In a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add in onion and saute 2-3 minutes. Add in garlic and ground beef. Break meat apart as it browns. Once meat has browned completely, pour in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, bay leaves, dried basil, sugar, Italian Seasoning and salt. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to simmer. Cook sauce 1-2 hours or until very thick. You may have to add a little extra water as it reduces down to prevent scorching. This is normal.

Make the Meat Sauce

While meat sauce cooks, make the cheese layer: stir cheeses together in a bowl with basil, parsley and salt &amp; pepper. Set aside.

Cook lasagna noodles 2/3 of the time marked on the package. About 7 minutes or so. Drain and place noodles in a large bowl of cold water.

Make the Cheese Filling

Spread 1/2 cup prepared sauce in the bottom of a lightly greased 9x13 baking dish. Layer in 5-6 noodles across the bottom to completely cover. Spread half of the cheese mixture overtop of the noodles and then one third of the sauce. Top with another layer of noodles, the second half of the cheese mixture and another third of the sauce. Final layer is the last of the noodles and the last of the meat sauce. To bake: preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cover lasagna with greased foil. Bake 45 minutes with foil on. Remove foil and bake another 15 minutes or until cheese has browned and everything it hot all the way through. Remove from oven, cover lightly with foil and rest 20-30 minutes before cutting and serving. Sprinkle with dried parsley flakes, cut into squares and serve.
