A recipe for cake balls that uses cake mix, frosting and candy melts to create fun and festive bites. Cake balls are perfect for gift giving and they're easy to turn into cake pops!

Cake Balls Recipe

cake mix (flavor of your choice)

eggs, oil and water (as called

+ 2 tablespoons canned frosting (flavor of your choice)

candy melts (I recommend Ghirardelli Melting Wafers)

sprinkles

Prepare cake mix with the amount of oil, water and eggs directed on the box. Bake in a 9”x13” pan according to package directions.

Let cake cool completely, then break apart and crumble until fine crumbs form.

Stir in the frosting until a dough forms. If the dough seems dry, you can add additional frosting, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

Roll the cake mixture into tablespoon sized balls. Place the balls on a parchment lined baking sheet and chill for at least one hour.

Melt the candy melts in a bowl in the microwave, heating in 30 second increments, and stir until completely smooth.

Place each cake ball on a fork and use a spoon to pour the candy melts over the cake ball. Tap against the side of the bowl to remove excess candy melts.

Place each ball on a parchment lined sheet pan. Top with sprinkles.

Repeat with remaining cake balls and candy melts. Store in the refrigerator until ready to eat. Can be made up to 3 days in advance.

How to Make Cake Pops (easy and fool-proof)

box Pillsbury classic white cake mix

tbsp Pillsbury creamy supreme vanilla frosting

1 12 oz Wilton candy melts

tsp Crisco shortening

Bake the cake as instructed on the boxed cake mix and allow it to cool down to room temperature.

Now trim off the outer golden layer because it tends to be too dry to form the cake pop.

In a large bowl, crumble the cake into fine crumbs using your hands. Add 2 tbsp of vanilla frosting and mix with a spoon or your hands.

Shape the cake into balls and place them into the cake pop former. Make sure the cake ball is a little bit bigger than the size of the press. Once the cake ball is pressed tightly, remove the extra cake from the sides and roll the ball with your hands to smooth any imperfections. This step is optional. You can always just round it out with your hands alone.

Insert the sticks - Melt 1/4 cup of candy melts in a small bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals to prevent the candy from overheating.

Dip the tip of each cake pop stick into the melted candy and insert it into the cake ball about halfway through. Place each cake pop onto a baking sheet and transfer to the freezer for about 15- 20 minutes. Don’t keep them there too long or they will become too cold and cause the hot melted candy to crack after you dip them.

Thin out the candy melts before dipping- Meanwhile, melt the rest of the candy in a bowl. Make sure you melt them in 30-second intervals with mixing in between. Once it&#039;s melted well, add 1 1/2 tsp Crisco shortening or melting aid chips (preferably) and mix well with a whisk. Then pour the melted candy into a tall narrow cup.

Dip the cake pops- Now remove the cake balls from the freezer and dip each into the cup and tilt to the sides slowly to make sure the entire cake pop is covered. Then slowly pull up the cake pop. (Don&#039;t swirl the cake pop) Hold the cake pop in one hand and tap your wrist so that all the extra melted candy drips off.

Now decorate the dipped cake pops with sprinkles or nonpareils while the candy coating is still wet. That way the sprinkles adhere well.

Place in a Styrofoam block and let it stand for about an hour. Store at room temperature.

Make the filling - Place your cookies in a food processor or blender and pulse until all you have left are fine crumbs. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the cookie crumbs with the room temperature cream cheese until the mixture is combined. Shape the mixture into 1.5 inch balls and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Place the sheet in the freezer for 15 minutes in order for them to set.

Dip - One at a time, dip the cookie balls into the melted chocolate. I found that using a small spoon to remove the cookie balls and then holding it on the side of the bowl with the spoon for a few seconds to remove the excess chocolate produced the prettiest truffles.

Add sprinkles and let set - Place each cookie ball back onto the parchment paper and top with sprinkles immediately in order for them to stick to the chocolate. Let chocolate harden (the chocolate will harden very quickly since the cookie balls have been in the freezer) and enjoy! 

Cake balls are delicious balls of moist cake dipped in candy melts. A perfect bite-sized dessert for parties and holidays!

Crumble the cake into a large bowl. I like to use an electric mixer for this, but roughly crumbled with your hands works as well.

Add some frosting to the cake crumbles and mix well. Start with about a quarter of the container and add more as needed. You don&#039;t want your mixture to be too soft, it should have the consistency of play dough.

Form mixture into 1 inch balls, place on a parchment lined baking tray and chill until firmed up a bit, about 20 minutes.

Melt candy melts according to package directions and dip the cake balls until entirely coated, shaking off the excess. Immediately decorate with sprinkles, if desired, and allow to set. Makes about 24 balls.

Cake balls are essentially bite-sized cakes that you can eat on the go. They’re so easy to mix up - but hard to stop eating.

Prepare and bake the cake mix according to the boxed directions.

Immediately after taking the cake out of the oven, pour the hot cake into the bowl of a stand mixer.

Using the paddle attachment, mix on low speed until a dough forms that can be pressed together into a ball.

Portion out the dough and press into a ball in the palm of your hands or with a cake pop press.

Place the cake balls on a cookie sheet and then into the freezer to chill while melting the chocolate.

Melt the chocolate in the microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between each 30 seconds until mostly melted. Continue to stir until the remaining chocolate chips have melted.

Using a fork or a chocolate dipping tool, dip and coat the cake balls in chocolate.

Arrange on a parchment lined cookie sheet to set up and top immediately with sprinkles, if desired.

I have been searching for a cake ball/pop recipe for years. This is the one!! I cannot believe how simple, yet perfect this is. This was the texture I was looking for!! Just like Starbucks.
