Sweet and syrupy candied sweet potatoes, our camotes enmielado are a traditional Mexican dessert.

Camotes Enmielado (Candied Sweet Potatoes)

water

piloncillo

cinnamon

anise stars

cloves

potatoes

milk condensed milk

In 3-quart saucepan, place water, piloncillo, cinnamon sticks, anise stars, and whole cloves. Heat to boiling, stirring with a wooden spoon until piloncillo dissolves.

After 5 minutes, add sweet potatoes. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 40 to 45 minutes.

Remove and discard cinnamon sticks, anise stars, and cloves. Reserve syrup.

Serve sweet potatoes topped with reserved warm sweet syrup. Garnish with milk.

Sweet Southern Candied Yams with brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground nutmeg, and vanilla extract is one of the tastiest easiest sides. We love to serve it up for Thanksgiving dinner. 

Candied Yams

lbs sweet potatoes

brown sugar

sugar

unsalted butter

ginger

nutmeg

vanilla

Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper

Add the sweet potatoes, brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla to a large skillet over medium heat. As the sugars and butter melt stir to combine all the ingredients and coat the potatoes.

Bring the mixture to a low boil and then cover and reduce to a simmer. Cook for about 30 minutes or until fork tender. Gently turn the sweet potatoes as they are cooking.

Turn the heat up during the last few minutes of cooking to thicken the sauce. Season with kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste.  For best results serve promptly.

The candied yams were so delicious. I used the baking method. It smelled so good in the house. Thanks for the great recipe!
