This Chicken Orzo Soup is a light and healthy soup filled with tender chicken and orzo in a bright lemony broth. It is an easy, comforting soup recipe that is ready in under 30 minutes.

Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup

olive oil (divided)

chicken breasts

kosher salt and black pepper

onion

carrots

celery (diced)

garlic

thyme leaves

dry white wine (optional)

chicken stock

bay leaves

red pepper flakes (optional)

orzo pasta

lemon zest

lemon juice

parsley

Sear

Heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a large heavy-bottom stock pan over medium heat. Season the cubed chicken with salt and pepper and then add to the heated oil. Saute until golden on each side, and then remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.

Saute

Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the pan. Add in the onion, carrots, and celery and saute until tender, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in thyme and garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Stir in the wine, if using, and allow the alcohol to cook off for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the chicken stock, bay leaf, and red pepper flakes, if using, and bring the mixture to a boil.

Simmer

Stir in the reserved chicken and orzo and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until the orzo is al dente, about 9-10 minutes.

Finish

Turn off the heat and stir in the lemon zest and lemon juice. Taste to adjust seasonings. Serve with parsley if desired.

tsp salt

tsp pepper

tbsp all-purpose flour

chicken broth

dry orzo pasta

heavy cream (optional, but delicious!)

To a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, add the butter and olive oil. Once oil is hot and butter is melted, add in the onion and carrot. Sauté for 8 minutes to soften the veggies.

Stir in the minced garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, and oregano and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the flour and let it cook for about 2 minutes, or until it becomes golden in color. Slowly whisk in chicken broth, being careful to continually whisk so that the flour doesn't clump up.

Stir in the orzo and chicken, then bring to a simmer. Let simmer for 11-12 minutes or until orzo is cooked, stirring often so the orzo doesn’t stick. Stir in the heavy cream and enjoy!

Melt the butter in a stockpot or large...

Melt the butter in a stockpot or large Dutch oven set over medium-high heat. Add the onions, celery, and good pinch of salt and pepper, and saute while stirring occasionally for 5 minutes. Add the carrots and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and thyme and cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant. Add the flour and stir frequently for 1 ½ to 2 minutes (this will help to flavor the soup and thicken it as well). The flour should turn golden brown. Slowly whisk in the broth until smooth.

Increase the heat to high, bring the soup to a boil, and stir in the orzo. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the orzo from sticking to the bottom of the pot.

Mix in the cooked chicken, lemon juice, and heavy cream and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, just until the chicken is warmed through. Serve while still hot with a sprinkle of parsley over the top.

Italian Chicken Orzo Soup Recipe

Place the butter, onions, and garlic in a large sauce pot, and set over medium heat. Saute the onions for 3 minutes to soften. Then stir in the carrots, celery, Italian Seasoning, and 1 teaspoon salt. Saute another 3-5 minutes.

Add whole chicken breasts to the pot. Pour in the broth and bring to a boil.  Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through.

Remove the chicken from the pot and set on a cutting board. Add the orzo to the soup and stir well so it doesn't stick. Chop or shred the chicken into bite-size pieces, then return to the pot.

When ready to serve, taste, then season with salt and pepper as needed. Stir in the fresh basil leaves and parmesan cheese. Ladle into bowls and serve warm!

Creamy Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup

Tablespoons butter ((20 grams))

onion (, diced, (about 1 small onion))

carrots (, diced, (about 2 medium carrots))

celery (, diced, (about 2 ribs))

garlic (, minced)

chicken broth (2 liters)

½ lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts ((680 grams))

chicken bouillon paste

Italian seasoning

rosemary

dry orzo pasta ((200 grams))

lemon (, juice and zest)

Sauté Veggies: Heat oil and butter in a large pot over medium heat. Once melted, add onions, carrots, and celery then sauté for several minutes, until softened. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

Add chicken, Italian seasoning, thyme, rosemary, and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes (or until chicken reaches 160 degrees F).

Chop chicken: Remove chicken to a plate, cover with aluminum foil, and allow to rest before chopping in pieces.

Stir in orzo and cook for 8 more minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender.

Finish soup: Reduce heat to low and stir in lemon juice, zest, cream, parsley, and season generously with salt and pepper. Return the chicken to the pot. Taste the soup and add additional seasonings or bouillon if needed.

So good and easy to throw together. Did some minor changes based on what I had on hand at the house. I used 3 scallions instead of a regular onion and couscous instead of orzo. Came out amazing! Love your recipes. My cooking has improved significantly since finding your website.

This is amazing quicker easier version of yia yia’s avgolemono soup recipe!  So creamy and delish! I left out the cream bc I didn’t have any and we did add a little more dill and lemon because the fam is Greek! It’s now in the regular rotation for us. In this cold weather this is the best soup! Add some crusty bread. Can’t tell you how good! Make it! You will not regret!
