Chinese Orange Chicken

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts

Eggs (whisked)

Cornstarch

Flour

Oil (for frying)

Orange Juice

Tablespoons Rice Vinegar (or White Vinegar)

Tablespoons Soy Sauce (use tamari

Ginger

Garlic Powder (or 2 garlic cloves, finely diced)

Red Chili Flakes

Orange Zest (from 1 orange)

Tablespoon Cornstarch

In a medium pot, add orange juice, sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and red chili flakes. Heat for 3 minutes.

In a small bowl, whisk 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 Tablespoons of water to form a paste. Add to orange sauce and whisk together. Continue to cook for 5 minutes, until the mixture begins to thicken. Once the sauce is thickened, remove from heat and add orange zest.

Place flour and cornstarch in a shallow dish or pie plate. Add a pinch of salt. Stir.

Dip chicken pieces in egg mixture and then flour mixture. Place on plate.

Heat 2 -3 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Using a thermometer, watch for it to reach 350 degrees.

Working in batches, cook several chicken pieces at a time. Cook for 2 - 3 minutes, turning often until golden brown. Place chicken on a paper-towel-lined plate. Repeat.

Toss chicken with orange sauce. You may reserve some of the sauce to place on rice. Serve it with a sprinkling of green onion and orange zest, if so desired.

Make the Sauce

Whisk together orange juice, zest, chicken broth, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and chili flakes in a medium-sized bowl.

Make a Cornstarch Slurry

Whisk together 2 teaspoons cornstarch with 4 teaspoons water in a small bowl to make a cornstarch slurry.

Orange Sauce

Mince Aromatics

Mince 1 tablespoon garlic and 1 tablespoon ginger. Set aside.

Prepare the Chicken

Cut the chicken breast into 1-inch cubes. In a medium bowl, combine 1 teaspoon kosher salt, ½ teaspoon pepper, and ½ teaspoon sesame oil.

Fry the Chicken

Heat a large saute pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, once hot, add the chicken in a single layer in the pan. Cook without moving for 2 minutes, and then stir and cook for an additional 2 minutes.

Simmer the Sauce

Add garlic and ginger, stir-fry until fragrant, 30 seconds. Add the sauce to the pan and allow it to simmer and bubble, 1 to 2 minutes. Mix the cornstarch slurry and then gradually add it to the pan, constantly stirring to combine. Cook until the sauce thickens, 1 minute. Season with more salt and pepper as needed.

Garnish and Serve

Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Serve with your choice of sides like rice and vegetables.

Easy Orange Chicken Stir-Fry

This Chinese Orange Chicken is made with crispy fried chicken coated in a sticky orange chicken sauce.

chicken thighs (about 6 thighs, or 3 chicken breasts*)

all-purpose flour

vegetable oil (canola, sunflower etc.)

vegetable oil (for frying depending on the size of your pan)

orange (you'll need the juice and zest)

rice vinegar (or white vinegar)

brown sugar (packed)

garlic (minced, garlic

cornstarch (mixed with 1 tbsp water)

green onions (chopped)

red pepper flakes

Cut chicken into 1-inch cubes.

In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, salt and pepper. Add the egg, oil and water, whisking until smooth.

Add the chicken cubes to the mixture, making sure the chicken gets thoroughly coated. Cover and chill for 30 minutes in the fridge. (If you&#x27;re in a hurry, 10 minutes will do.)

In a medium saucepan or deep fryer, add 2 inches of oil and heat to 350˚F (177˚C). Line a plate with paper towels and set aside.

Add the marinated chicken cubes in batches of about 10-15 pieces, shaking off excess batter if needed. Deep fry for 2-3 minutes until golden, turning halfway through with a slotted spoon for even browning.**

Remove to the plate and cover with foil to keep warm while you make the sauce.

To a medium saucepan, add orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, and garlic.

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a low boil. Carefully taste a few drops and adjust sugar, soy sauce and vinegar to suit your preference.

Mix the cornstarch and water in a cup to make a slurry and pour into the sauce. Stir constantly until the sauce coats the back of a spoon. (This can take as little as 30 seconds or as long as several minutes.)

Add the fried chicken and toss until the sauce coats it thoroughly.

Garnish with optional sesame seeds, green onions and red pepper flakes. Serve immediately.

Chinese Takeout Orange Chicken is a quick, easy, delicious meal ready in 30 minutes. It’s healthier than takeout — can be pan-fried, air fried, or baked.

Orange Chicken (Chinese Takeout Recipe)

Use a paper towel to pat the chicken completely dry. Cut the chicken 1-inch cubes, and season well with salt and pepper. Set aside for 5 minutes.

Prepare a shallow plate with beaten eggs and another with cornstarch. Dip one piece of chicken at a time into the egg wash, then evenly coat in the cornstarch.

Cook the chicken on the stove, in the oven, or in the air fryer:

To pan fry: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat for until the hot oil shimmers, about 3-4 minutes. Fry the chicken in two batches for 6-8 minutes until golden brown and cooked through, flipping once. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate and allow the chicken to rest. 

To cook in the oven: Preheat oven to 375F. Place the coated chicken on a parchment-lined half sheet baking pan in a single layer. Bake until cooked through, flipping once

To cook in the air fryer: Place coated chicken in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Spray with cooking oil spray. Air fry at 350F for 15 minutes until golden brown. You may have to cook in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.

In a small mixing bowl, combine garlic, ginger, orange juice, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, sesame oil, and cornstarch. Whisk well until smooth.

In a large skillet, heat the sauce over medium heat. Heat until simmered and thickened to a desired consistency, about 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly.

Garnish with green onions and serve warm with a bowl of steamed rice.

Slow Cooker Orange Chicken and Broccoli

Spray liner of a slow cooker with cooking spray.

Season chicken with salt and pepper and place in a large zip-top bag. Add cornstarch to the bag, seal the bag, and toss to coat the chicken pieces. Place chicken in the bottom of the prepared slow cooker.

In a medium bowl, whisk together orange marmalade, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic and ginger. Pour sauce over chicken. Stir to make sure that all of the chicken pieces are coated in sauce.

Cover slow cooker and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours (or on HIGH for 1 ½ - 2 hours). During the final 15 minutes of cooking, add broccoli to slow cooker. If the sauce looks too thick at this point, feel free to add water, as necessary, to reach desired consistency.

Spoon chicken, broccoli, and sauce over rice. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds, if desired.

Make The Orange Sauce

In a large bowl combine orange zest (or minced tangerine peel) with the orange juice, rice vinegar, soy sauce, wine or sherry, sugar, cornstarch and salt. Mix until the cornstarch is fully dissolved.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add garlic and ginger and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Give the sauce ingredients a stir and pour into the pan. Once it comes to a simmer, cook, stirring, until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, 30 seconds to a minute. Transfer sauce to a bowl quickly to stop the cooking process. Set sauce aside to cool. When cool, the sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 1 week or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Marinate The Chicken

In a large bowl combine chicken pieces with the 1 tablespoon oil and ½ teaspoon salt. Mix well and let the chicken marinate for 10-15 minutes.

Pour the beaten egg into the bowl with the chicken and mix well. Add cornstarch and toss to form an uneven coating with little bits of dry cornstarch left unincorporated.

Stir Fry The Chicken

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet or wok over medium-high heat until hot. Add all the chicken to the pan, spreading it out into a single layer. Use tongs to separate the pieces of chicken if they're sticking together.

Cook the chicken undisturbed for 2-3 minutes, or until the bottom turns golden. Flip to brown the other side and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until golden and cooked through. Transfer chicken to a plate. Remove the pan from the stove and let it cool for 2-3 minutes. Wipe out the extra oil from the pan using a couple of layers of paper towel attached to a pair of tongs. Return the pan to the stove over medium-high heat. Return chicken to the pan and pour in the sauce. Stir for 30 seconds or until chicken is coated with sauce and heated through. Add garnishes if you like. Serve hot.
