The following recipe shows a traditional preparation method of speculaas. Although the specialized speculaas spice mixture is widely available in supermarkets across the Netherlands, this recipe also gives instructions on how to make your own, which can be prepared in advance and should be kept in a cool, dark place.

Speculaas

(1.1 lbs) flour

(10.5 oz) brown sugar

tbsp spice mixture

tsp baking powder

(1 tsp) salt

(6.35 oz) butter,

ml (3 tbsp + 1 tsp) milk or water

FOR SPICE MIXTURE

cinnamon powder

tsp nutmeg powder

ginger powder

clove powder

tsp white pepper

cardamom powder

tsp anise powder

This recipe gives very detailed instructions on how to prepare the traditional zimtsterne cookies. The dough is made with just almonds, egg whites, cinnamon, sugar, and lemon juice, meaning no flour is added, while the icing is made by whipping egg whites and sugar. The dough needs a lot of chilling time, and it should be frozen before cutting out the cookies if you want to get neat-looking ones.

Delicious coconut &quot;busserl&quot; cookies, also called coconut kisses, with an easy-to-make recipe! For coconut and cookie lovers, an absolute must for Christmas cookie baking.

Austrian Coconut "Busserl" Cookies

Desiccated coconut

Powdered sugar

Put the 6 Egg white in a large mixing bowl and add 4 ½ cup Desiccated coconut.

whisk

Whisk the egg whites into the powdered sugar with the hand or stand mixer until well combined.

Add 4 ½ cup Desiccated coconut. Stir with a wooden spoon (or let the kitchen machine do all the stirring) until a viscous mass is formed.

Once all the desiccated coconut is stirred in, add 1 tbsp Fine breadcrumbs and 1 tbsp Flour.

Preheat the oven to 356 °F (180 °C) top-/ bottom heat

prepare

Prepare a baking tray, cover it with baking paper and fetch yourself a pastry bag.

Use a pastry bag with a medium-sized round tip or a disposable pastry bag where you cut off the cone end in the desired size.

fill

Fill the pastry bag with the coconut mixture about half full.

pipe

Form with the pastry bag small, pyramid-shaped heaps on the baking tray lined with baking paper until the tray is filled up.

bake

Bake the cookies for 15 minutes on the middle rack.

Continue with the next tray and so on until you have prepared several trays and there is no more dough left.

cool

After 15 minutes, the first batch of coconut kisses is ready. Now put them aside and let them rest and cool.

store

Once the coconut kisses have cooled and firmed up a bit, remove them from the tray and store in a well-sealed cookie tin.
